ChartSpot: January 2010

New Super Mario Bros. Wii is king, with MAG and Bayonetta landing in bottom half of top 20; Sims 3 staves off Mass Effect 2 on PC charts.

After a depressing 2009, January's US retail sales figures were far from the beacon of light that many within the industry had hoped for. As assessed by the NPD Group last week, software sales for the first month of the decade were down 12 percent year-over-year to $597.9 million, with New Super Mario Bros. Wii (656,700 units), Mass Effect 2 (572,100 units), and Wii Fit Plus (555,700 units) scoring gold, silver, and bronze, respectively.

Being a critical darling doesn't always pay the bills.
Being a critical darling doesn't always pay the bills.

NPD has subsequently released its lists for January's top 20 non-PC and PC games at retail. Easily the highest-profile debut during January to not chart in the top 10 was Sega and PlatinumGames' critically lauded Bayonetta. The Xbox 360 edition of the game did manage to slip into the top 20 non-PC chart, however, landing in the 17th slot. (NPD does not provide units for the bottom half of the top 20.)

The PlayStation 3 editions of a number of other debuts also appeared in the top 20. Army of Two: The 40th Day on the PS3 finished 11th, three slots behind its Xbox 360 counterpart. The PS3 installment of Darksiders also trailed its Xbox 360 companion, finishing in 14th place. Other PS3 titles to chart were MAG, which Sony has said sold 500,000 units worldwide, as well as the God of War Collection, which landed in 20th.

Nintendo's platforms dominated the remainder of the top 20, as Wii Play landed in 12th and the EA Sports Active bundle for the Wii finished 15. On Nintendo's handheld, Mario Kart DS, New Super Mario Bros. DS, and Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story all charted.

Save for the arrival of Mass Effect 2, the PC charts reflected far less volatility. Mass Effect 2 found itself flanked by The Sims 3 and The Sims 3: World Adventures to make up the top three, while Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 dropped one slot to fourth. In addition to the perennially chart-topping World of Warcraft and Sims installments, the PC charts also saw Dragon Age: Origins retain its top 10 status, slipping to seventh and edging out the collector's edition of BioWare's other new RPG, Mass Effect 2.

@Robinvd1986 @mrzero1982pt2 PC Game sales, difficult to track, because a lot PC users nowaday using digital distribution using Steam / D2D almost 75% users using that system (to avoid damaged product & the length of time in direct delivery, also they are provided by the server if they lost their datas) :)

- Bayonetta not intended for family-based gamer (Wii) or hard-core gamer (360/PS3 it's not even released on PCs) this game has no proper direction (proper category)!! that's why!! sold very poorly. :) :) . - Unlike Mario, Mass Effect II, Modern Warfare II & The Sims III. they have the right market strategy "specifically" & following the needs of buyers ((gamers)).

Well there's no suprise that Bayonetta has such poor sales.(The reason being is they shafted one version of it over another, so no one is buying it. Right now) Also why buy Bayonetta now when there is so much more coming out at the same time as Bayonnetta was released. @Bigbudd0045 I agree with you 100% A game (no matter what system it's on should be damn near flawless) I mean they're asking for $60+ per game it better be worth it.

eh, its the economy. lots of people belt tighten in january even when the economy is good. Mass Effect 2 was the only must have kind of title, the rest, whether high quality or not, were unproven. Speaking for myself...I am past the point of rushing out to buy a game on day one. Ill wait six months and get it cheaper or used. At this point, for 60 bucks I expect the game to be flawless and not be insulted by the immediate release of DLC expected to drain more money from me. DLC pisses me off to high hell, its normally overprices. The first Dragon Age DLC was 6 bucks and maybe a half hour of play time, maybe. For 60 bucks you got the full game which is considerably more then 5 hours (ten times the cost but more then ten times the play time). Sorry for that tangent.

Certainly sad and a bit surprising to see Bayonetta doing so badly. All of the people saying "see? hardcore gamers don't support hardcore games" should remember that Devil May Cry 4 and GoW have sold millions each, I just think that part of it was the oversexualized protagonist and part was bad press about the bad PS3 port. Overall, i think the relatively low sales numbers are a result from too many publishers chickening out from Q4 2009. I know I had a good bit in December where I wanted a new game but nothing was really coming out, and now there's too many games for me to focus on--out of all of these games, i've only had time to play Bayonetta and Mass Effect 2, for instance.

Anyone else kind of surprised on how low MAG sold in the US? It was sold out for the weekend where I lived. On the third day, 2 copies of the game was traded in at Gamestop and I picked one of them up. I didn't like the game but I can see its merits. Returned it and put the money toward reserving ME2.

So as far as multiplatform games go, looks like the 360 versions all are continuing to sell better then the PS3 versions. No big surprise there. Mass Effect 2 is amazing, I just tend to think Mario games will always sell well and be at the top of the chart. Much like the Elvis Song "Burning Love" which only made it to number 2 on the charts and was kept out by "My ding a ling" by Chuck Berry. Microsoft will be a force this year and I think it will be cool that a new MS game will be top 5 pretty much every moth this year.

Damn, Mass Effect 2 sold successfully to be number 2 for last months charts. Imagine if New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Mass Effect 2 were to be released at the same date. Then ME2 would annihilate NSMBW in sales!

With Steam our PC sales are recorded and logged. I believe that you can use Metacritic to see where these games are on their rating list. I love the 360 and Steam on my PC. I'm glad to see that Nintendo is doing very well in sales, makes me wonder if at some point they will use the cash piles that they are sitting on to make the next best thing in gaming, since technically they are the ONLY company left from the 80's video game industry.

On the PS3 version of Bayonetta there are some issues that take away from a total enjoyment of the game. Profanity being one that most parents would stay away from making the game a truly Mature game to play. But the biggest issue I have with the game is the camera. Its awful, to say the least.

sad to see Bayonetta lose out to that overrated piece of crap Darksiders, I have a suspicion that since Konami was a publishing partner on this that they made reviewers sign contracts again, fashioned much like the ones that prevented MGS4 from getting the horrible reviews it deserved

This will be a useful chart to remember the next time someone goes on one of their 'WII SUXX REAL GAMERZ PLAY 360 OR PS3!" rants. Bayonetta is 17th on the 360, and the PS3 edition didn't even chart? Sorry, kids, but you're busted. You can all stop complaining about 'fads' and fitness games and shovelware. You guys don't support top-notch gamer's games when they come out, so why should anyone bother making them?

Let's face it, gamers that play things like Bayonetta, DMC, GoW, etc. aren't the majority. The wider demographic is people who play a few minutes a day, and want family style games. That's what the Wii provides, and that's why the Wii tops the charts. These are sale figures...

While predictable, Bayonetta really deserves to be much higher. And Mass Effect 2 should have been #1. Not to hound Mario or anything, but creativity and progression of the artform, along with just being an all-around amazing game deserves to do better than Mario REMIX!!! Alas, these are sales figures, and not a best-of list, and we must acknowledge Nintendo's grasp of the non-gamer and nostalgia.

MAG did pretty good for being in the last 5 days of Jan. I still can't believe that Mario Kart DS is still in the top 20. That game came out in 2005. You'd think anyone who wanted it would have bought it by now.

Bayonetta is a great game but I can completely understand why it would underperform in the US. It's atmosphere is very...quirky. My wife thinks the game is completely sinful and demonic and can't believe I play it at all. I keep telling her "it's just a game"...heck, I can't even remember what the story is. I just like to play it.

Thankfully, non-American markets will elevate Bayonetta. It sold more units on launch day in Japan than it did over the entire month in the States. Makes you wonder why they bother porting games over here half the time; the proverbial pearls before swine.

@coldsauce09: while there are more people in America that like those types of games, there are still a ton of people who play other genres. And don't forget, the Chinese and South Koreans play a whole lot of MMOs. But just like America, I'm sure that is not all they play. Everyone is different, no need to stereotype.

@MudkipMaster30 I cannot believe Mario Kart Ds and New Super Mario Bros continue in the top 20... But they deserve it... They are classic jewels, but the most important of all is that they are extremely fun and suitable for all ages... So far, both of them are in the group of the best of the best on the DS system, and for any new owner of this handheld are excellent choices...

No surprise about Bayonetta. Playing a satanic witch out to murder angels might be a hit with reviewers and some fans, but the vast majority of gamers will stick with Mass Effect 2 or MW2, and families will stick with the Wii and Sims.
