Christian Bale on Playing Batman: "I Didn't Quite Nail It"

The Dark Knight Muses.

Christian Bale may have starred in some of the most acclaimed superhero movies of all-time, but the actor doesn't think much of his performances in Christopher Nolan's Batman movies.

No Caption Provided

While promoting his new movie Knight of Cups, Bale was asked how he felt about his work in Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises. "I didn't quite manage what I hoped I would throughout the trilogy," he said, via Yahoo Movies. "Chris did, but my own sense of self is like, 'I didn't quite nail it.'"

Bale went on to explain that Heath Ledger's Oscar-winning turn as the Joker didn't help matters either. "Heath turned up, and just kind of completely ruined all my plans," he said. "'Because I went, 'He's so much more interesting than me and what I'm doing.'"

Bale was the latest in a long line of actors to play the Caped Crusader, and helped restore the popularity of the character after the disappointment of 1997's flop Batman & Robin, which starred George Clooney.

Nolan's Batman films made more than $2.3 billion at the global box office between 2005 and 2012. Ben Affleck will next play the character in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which opens on March 24, 2016.

I think he did a good job, nothing incredible but a good job. Batman's villains are the best ones in the whole comic universe -Marvel and DC alike- because they're "real", so it's not surprising if a villain's role is more powerful than Batman's (from an acting view, not storytelling, of course)

Michael Keaton will always be my favourite, and Tim Burton's Batman films are the best, they've just got something about them that you can't really explain with words, just can't and that's beyond special, just like your first girlfriend and the first time you ride a motorbike quite fast ; )

Only thing I didn't like about christian Bale's Batman is the voice =P

@Johny_47: Bale's gravelly Batman voice was nice and cool when he was interrogating Flass, Joker and Bane (eh) and such but carrying it on through all Batman dialog through all three films started to wear it thin. I still stand behind his choice though.

To be honest (and kinda because it was the first Batman I saw) I think Micheal Keaton NAILED being the Bat. The one scene that did it in for me was in Batman Returns when right before Catwoman appeared and the Penguin asked Batman "You don't think your gonna win, do you?" And Batman ominously and DEAD seriously looked at him without a blink, paused, and darkly replied with a suicidal smirk "Things change...". Being aware of his own mortality and letting the enemy know that, is something that just resinated with being Batman.

"the disappointment of 1997's flop Batman and Robin" That was a great movie, marvellously entertaining with its cheesy acting (Mr Freeze) and weird additions (Bat credit card). It felt like one of the old movies with Adam West.

I think Bale is being too hard on himself, the villains are always more interesting than the good guys, although Batman isn't exactly a good guy altogether.

I always considered any Batman movie to view Batman as "the host." The main attraction was always the villains.

He did a good job, imo the best actor to play Batman but he's right, he didn't quite nail it and I'm not sure anyone will.

The gruff, dark satanic voice was stupid. But I dont think it was Bale's vision, it was Nolans.

Not sure why they had Christian Bale talk in that deep heavy voice. He did ok as Batman but my favorite is still Michael Keaton.

As a big man Batman fan that loves Bale as an actor, he's really not wrong. It's good to see an actor that keeps it real though, he probably has had enough sycophants telling him he was perfect to believe it if he chose to.

I do think Nolan was at fault for Bale not being a better Batman, we know the voice was one hundred percent Nolan's fault, and look at the fight scene in the Batman V Superman final trailer compared to every Bale fight scene. Bale also never gets much of a chance to be the "greatest detective in the world", he was given a fairly one dimensional character. FWIW I did like the movies.

@spaced92: YES... that Nolan batman was unsure of himself and didn't have the intellect. Michael Cain was smarter than him in that movie.

Batman is all about the intellect. The planning, the investigating, the deducing... It's what actually allows him to stand on equal footing with a godlike character like Superman is that Batman has an intellect that allows him to. It's not his robotic suit, or his gadgets, it's his tactical acumen.

It's obvious they just asked him to say this to lower expectations for the next Batman.

Don't worry, though. American Psycho was all you, Christian Bale.

I don't think any actor will ever "quite nail" batman, but Bale is by far the best. Everyone before him made it some kind of joke, with the exception of Michael Keaton.

the first 2 movies were awesome, but some of the bat voice scenes were a little off to the point of comical. the dark knight rises was hugely disappointing for me. and I don't blame Bale for that, I blame Chris Nolan. the whole concept of batman being taken out of his physical prime and nearly bankrupt and you make him go up against bane (and lol banes voice was even worse); and the cliché nuke...ugh. then you try the rocky training routine to get him back in shape to win only for the final fight to be too short and be really all that retraining didn't show. what I wanted was a long drawn out bloody brawl to show batman barely winning.

@hampton2003: the "WHO DO YOU WORK FOR!?!?!" scene was pretty hilarious, I must admit. When he dangles that corrupt cop over the ledge. Pretty terrible, actually.

I think bale is an awesome actor. I love his honesty and I agree with him I don't think he nailed it, he was ok. But an actor of his calibre could have knocked it out of the park. Heath ledger now he was amazing as the joker. I don't think any movie script has given me the batman I'd like to see. The worlds greatest detective with a real genius level intelligence...... Some how I don't think I'll be getting that from affleck either.

@dinosaur_teeth: The voice was realistic though. Otherwise people would know its Bruce Wayne. Goes along with kinda grounded in reality-ishh vibe of the movies

@b3iv5on: Bale's voice just didn't work for what they were trying to do...

But that's really the only complaint I've seen that people have... Otherwise it seems ridiculous he'd be ridiculing his performance...

@b3iv5on: Keaton went lower and huskier with his voice and didn't sound ridiculous. Keaton's Batman and voice seemed the best fit to me.

I always thought he didn't get enough credit in the Dark Knight movies and was overshadowed by the villains. Bane, and especially Joker, were great but I liked the feel of Bale's Bruce and Batman as well.
