Cities: Skylines Passes New Sales Milestone, Free DLC Coming

2 million and counting.

45 Comments

The SimCity-inspired Cities: Skylines has now sold more than 2 million copies worldwide, publisher Paradox Interactive announced this week. The celebrated PC city-building game, developed by Colossal Order, was released a year ago this week. The 2 million figure counts copies sold across PC, Mac, and Linux.

Skylines sold 250,000 copies in its first 24 hours after release last year, becoming Paradox's fastest-selling game in its history. In an effort to celebrate the game's first birthday and its big success, Paradox has announced it will release a free content update later this month with new features.

Now Playing: Cities: Skylines - One Year Anniversary Trailer

The update, coming March 22, will introduce landscaping-themed content and features, including the ability to perform "mild terraforming" for existing cities. Additionally, the update will make canals and quays available for construction.

Additionally, Paradox has put out a video that speaks to the game's first-year accomplishments. One notable piece of information is that Skylines development started with just nine people and today, the team's headcount is only 16 people.

Developers also teased that they plan to support Skylines for "years" into the future with "meaningful" new content and challenges.

"Our team is floored by the response players have had to Cities: Skylines and by the level of success the game has achieved in such a short time," Colossal Order CEO Mariina Hallikainen said in a statement. "We knew that trying to create a city-building game with such a small team was an ambitious project, but we'd been working towards that goal ever since the first Cities in Motion title, and we knew, if given the chance, that we could make it happen. A year ago, we achieved that goal, and the results have been nothing short of incredible. We've got so much more in store for all two million of our players, and I want to thank each and every one of them."

Colossal Order has also announced a sweepstakes where one player will win a trip to visit the studio in Tampere, Finland. This person will get a tour of the studio and access to the game's anniversary party. You can enter by submitting anything Chirper-themed--it could be art, poetry, a song, a game mod, or anything else. A full set of contest rules are available here.

In GameSpot's 8/10 Cities: Skylines review, real-life mayor Brett Todd wrote: "Right now, there is no better way to take a peek at life as a mayor without filing your papers to run for office in the real world."

An expansion titled Snowfall was released in February.

I love this game, it's the best city builder out there by a long shot imo, glad to hear they plan to keep working on it because I'll keep supporting them!

@the_master_race: I'm all for that but what exactly did Paradox have to do with that game...? They aren't the publisher or developer, or were they once known as Troika Games...?

Game development done right. I don't have the game simply because it's not my cup of tea. But just about everybody I know who do have it love it and love the guys behind it. Kudos to your success! Hopefully other developers will take note; but I highly doubt it.

@heqteur: Doesn't mean they don't. Especially when pc gamers deem to know exactly what console gamers want. Like everybody is the same guess what still outsell pc version no matter how low the interest.

@tracer420: Firaxis don't even bother with XCOM 2 on consoles because their first XCOM didn't sell well on Xbox/PS. And I heard that those ports were rather good, there's a reason why some games genres practically don't exist on consoles.

@jcv1811:

I'd imagine it would be bit of nightmare with just a controller and it probably wouldn't run very well. The game seems to be fairly CPU intensive from what I can tell.

@beantownsean: That's cause pc games are optimized shitty to many variables in rigs. Console will obviously have some slight downgrades in visuals but I'm sure it will run fine. Since the specs are static.

@tracer420:

Its not really about graphics, but more about the CPU power needed to manage a dynamic, moving world. All its inhabitants and moving vehicles all need to be managed real-time, in addition to rendering graphics.

Consoles might be able do it, who knows?...but the world need to be limited to a size much smaller than PC otherwise the game will come to a halt.

If I want console games, I play them on console. If I want PC games, I play them on PC.

How much time should Paradox spend trying to shove a Corvette V8 into VW Beetle?

@beantownsean: How many games u develop? Seems like u can give the creators in a lesson on how what they are already working on isn't going to work. Watch out we got a guy who thinks he knows better than everyone else.

I've played enough games to know the difference between CPU bound and GPU bound.

Great game by a company that is very involved with it's fan base. I remember when Bioware was like this before being sold to EA.

@tracer420: You're not looking at it in the right context. The dev studio that made Cities Skylines did not even expect this amount of sales. They weren't looking to sell 6 mil copies at all, let alone 2 by this point. That said, they definitely made a better-than-expected profit from this game.

@lonesamurai1: Not true how many games come out people with good pc runs like crap to many variables in pc for my liking just wanna be able to play. Arkham knight one of the worst offenders but u hear about it all the time game doesn't work with AMD good or some other brand or part. Of course games look better but usually u put alot more in to get it. Time and money

@tracer420: Okay, I think I understand. I misread what you wrote. But yeah, bringing it to consoles opens up to a wider market. Can't guarantee it would sell three times as much as PC because neither you or me can say how many console gamers would be interested in a game like Skylines (though I'd personally recommend it to anybody).

@tracer420: I don't think it would've cracked 6mil copies on consoles. This is not a regular console gamer's cup of tea. Also, with little to none marketing, this would be completely ignored by the average Joe.

No matter how you look at it, these numbers are impressive. Way too impressive. And that too accomplished by a team of 9 people (currently 16). Their marketing has been the word of mouth from day one, and it has done wonders. With a good game and an honest developer, you don't need shady marketing tactics like the big guys.

@tracer420:You can't you say? interesting opinion from someone who definitely didn'T do any research.

Here's Diablo III's number:

http://www.vgchartz.com/gamedb/?name=diablo+III&publisher=&platform=&genre=&minSales=0&results=200

Interesting... Half the sales on PC and the other half on...4 other platforms. It sold as much PS3/PS4/X360/XONE copies combiend than what PC alone did.

Speaking of diablo... Here's the number for the first diablo. The numer of copies sold on all consoles is laughable compared to what PC did.

http://www.vgchartz.com/gamedb/?name=diablo

Starcraft was also released on consoles and... guess what? it sold much more than 50% of its copies on PC.

I could go for hours with examples if you like, but since you look like a smart person, i'll leave the research work for your curiosity.

All in all, it all depends on what game you'Re talking about. There ARE games which were made for PC and, strangely, those games did much better on PC than on consoles.

In conclusion, one lesson learned for you: always do your research before assuming stuff .

XCOM: Enemy Unknown, The Witcher 3 (probably, they'll confirm this later this year but for now definitely PC copies outnumbered Xbox One copies), didn't Rise of The Tomb Rider on PC outselling Xbox version even if PC version was few months later?

@tracer420: BWAHAHAHA...dude, vgchartz only count physical copies, more than 95% of PC games are distributed in digital form. CD Projekt Red sold more than 1.5 mil copies in their own digital shop, GOG.COM, 0.5 mil on Steam and other digital retailers, so yeah, check your numbers again. And what about Rise of Tomb Rider, do you have another theory:), you asked about one game,

Edit: I checked wiki about Xcom, and...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XCOM:_Enemy_Unknown

@tracer420:

WOW, again, those numbers ARE ABOUT PHYSICAL/BOX COPIES...On PC it's only 3-5% of sales. Most of PC games are selling on Steam, GOG, Origin, Uplay, etc. in DIGITAL form and on this f..... vgchartz charts digital copies aren't even included. Even f........ CDPR said 4 weeks after TW3 premiere that they sold more than 1 million copies on GOG. And again what about RoTR and XCOM because..."Name a game that's sells better on pc than console that is out on both and roughly same date? U can't"

And besides: Half Life 2 (first part was selling on PC for more than 10 years for full price), Left for Dead, Portal...

@doordie82: So 500,000 pc physical copies sold so 3 to 5 percent means 10 million copies sold on pc. Your numbers are spot on. And the original statement was games sell better on console than pc not just Xbox one if u can count windows Linux and mac then consoles can be bunched together.

BWAHAHAHAHAHA, Oh my f........ God:) You're so..... well I won't finish because I'll have another ban:) Of course you can't literally calculate those numbers. And yes for this day I'm pretty sure that The Witcher 3 sold more on GOG itself than on Xbox, and oh god, you said CONSOLE NOT CONSOLES, combining their sales is just pathetic attempt to prove your point since you consoles fanboys like to make epic flame wars about your precious platforms. And only thanks to this shitty war between Xbox and PS whole gaming industry must suffer f...... time/content exclusives which more than often affects quality of game itself.

And yeah, another good attempt with Windows/Mac/Linux since more than 99% of games are only on Windows and when someone is talking about PC Gaming rarely have on mind Mac or Linux.

And for a third time: WHAT ABOUT RISE OF TOMB RIDER AND XCOM. they're pretty good examples to bash your sh..ty theory.

@doordie82: But the question is did I say Xbox I was comparing console with pc not Xbox. XCOM came out on pc a year before it came to consoles already said that hype was gone. Said in original post come out around same time. Same with tomb raider Xbox version came out same day as fallout and in November busiest release month of the year. Pc version comes out in January nothing else to buy. GAMES SELL BETTER ON CONSOLE THERE IS NO DEBATING IT.

@tracer420: You're full of sh..t:)

I showed you that Xcom: Enemy Unknown have same release date on all platforms, so stop with your BS

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XCOM:_Enemy_Unknown

"Same with tomb raider Xbox version came out same day as fallout and in November busiest release month of the year. Pc version comes out in January nothing else to buy." of course, excuses, because you have nothing tp prove your sh...ty theory, because everyone who wanted RoTR must get F4, expecially when not everyone GIVE A S..T about Fallout especially from Bethesda.

"GAMES SELL BETTER ON CONSOLE THERE IS NO DEBATING IT." Yes, it is, unless you just shove deep in your console fanboyism. Many of games yes, but not every single one. Sales aren't equal to profit since every single console game is cutted in price by Sony/MS (30%), publisher (10-30%) and retailer for physical copy (I don't have a clue about % in this case). On PC you don't have to deal with s..t like this in most cases.

Sure overall consoles versions are greater in number in most case of AAA titles (but not in online/microtransaction segment) but in term of pure developer's profit it's not so sure, so stop being so cocky with your theories because your fanboyism is f...... annoying.
