Civil War Box Office Sets Record For A24, And Here's Which Movie It Dethroned

A24's political action drama is in theaters now and putting up big numbers.

24 Comments

Alex Garland's latest film, Civil War, was released in theaters this past weekend and it made enough money to set the record for the biggest opening weekend ever for film company A24.

The movie earned $25.7 million in North America this weekend, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It carried a production budget of $50 million and is A24's most expensive film yet, and this doesn't cover any marketing and promotional expenses.

A24 is better known for relatively lower-budget films like the Oscar-winning Moonlight, Greta Gerwig's coming-of-age story Lady Bird, Bo Burnham's Eighth Grade, Uncut Gems starring Adam Sandler, and Sofia Coppola's Priscilla, among many others.

A24's horror movie Hereditary, which was released in 2018, appears to be the company's previous record-holder for biggest opening weekend in North America ($13.5 million).

Civil War stars Kirsten Dunst as a photojournalist making her way through a divided America that's in the midst of a second civil war. Nick Offerman stars as the president, with a cast that also includes Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, and Jesse Plemons.

GameSpot's Civil War review scored the film a 9/10. Reviewer Phil Owen said, "Civil War will work best as an experiential thing, like an atrocity-filled theme park ride that's a bit more dense than your average Purge flick while still hitting some of the same sweet spots that those movies did."

As for Garland, he's known for directing the movies Ex Machina, Annihilation, and Men, in addition to the TV series Devs. Now that Civil War is out, he plans to stop directing movies and instead write films for other people to direct.

Regardless. Gamespot, I have been coming to this site since I had dial up. Stop with the inconsistency with movie reviews due to your political position. I don’t want reviews of any type of work or art being judged on anything other than the quality and if it is worth my time. If I want propaganda, I can go to Fox News, CNN, or msnbc.

It's not even a A24 production (it's a British produced movie), they just distribute it in the United States.

This movie scored 9/10. ( The same as Oppenheimer) how? Also, why could no one comment on the civil war review? Now you release this article with a misleading title as if civil war is a juggernaut at box office. Does gamespot have stake in a24 or are you pushing this movie for political reasons? This review was preceded by an article that said the all female ghostbusters sequel failed because trump won the election. Gamespot, when did you start judging entertainment based on your political views? Just be unbiased and tell me if a movie was good or not.

Pretty funny that it's described as A24's political action drama when the one thing in every review I've seen is that it is very apolitical.

I'm super excited to see it, looks awesome and I love Alex Garland.

@fbplayer1086: It is shot well, and has great sound at times, especially at the end. Otherwise, it's pretty shallow and not very compelling.

@zelda37: they shot themselves in the foot by not explaining how it started. The whole movie just seemed like liberal propaganda and a fantasy about murdering trump.

@restatbonfire: It's not the script writers fault that you automatically associate tyrants and fascists with Trump.

@robertos: You're right, that's Trump's fault.

Even if it doesn't include marketing, a $50 million budget seems downright cheap and reasonable these days, after all the MCU movies.
