Having already been adapted into a series of books, classic PC adventure game Myst is now being turned into a TV series.

Myst developer Cyan and Legendary Entertainment (the company behind the Warcraft and Dead Rising movies) have agreed to develop a series based on the game franchise, according to a Variety report. However, one key detail--whether it'll air on television or through a digital platform of some sort--has not yet been decided.

Aside from Legendary's intention to create the series, there were no details shared about what the project might look like. Variety states that Rand and Robyn Miller, brothers and co-developers of the game series, will be "creatively involved."

The original Myst was released back in 1993 and featured one of the early attempts to create a photorealistic game--in the process, helping to boost the popularity of CDs, which were still new at the time. In the game, players explored an island that was home to portals to other worlds. Puzzles were scattered throughout the island and these worlds, as were books that contained pleas from a pair of brothers--played by the Millers--to be set free.

Over the past two decades, the game has seen a number of sequels and has been ported to countless platforms, including iOS, PlayStation, DS, and 3DS (a trailer for this awful version can be seen above). There was also a miniseries based on Myst planned for release in the early 2000s that was cancelled.

Games have been targeted more and more as the source material for Hollywood projects in recent years, oftentimes with mixed (at best) results. Aside from the raft of movies that have gone nowhere, we've just recently seen the Need for Speed movie make a good deal of money, Ubisoft has extensive plans, and plans announced for films based on Angry Birds and Tetris, of all things. And in terms of TV, a new show based on Sonic Boom kicks off in a month's time, and Microsoft has multiple Halo series in the works.

I realized the moment I fell into the fissure that the book would not be destroyed as I had planned.

It continued falling into that starry expanse of which I had only a fleeting glimpse.

I've tried to speculate where it might have landed; I must admit, however, such conjecture is futile.

Still, questions of whose hands might one day hold my Myst book are unsettling to me.

I know my apprehensions might never be allayed, and so I close, realizing that perhaps the ending has not yet been written.

I had one of the novels based on the game that was pretty good. For some reason, I'd rather see it made by BBC more than anyone else....

I'm not the biggest fan of the existing Myst backstory, but I love the concept behind the games and I'm really interested to see what they do with it (assuming the project pans out).

I've had my copy of The Myst Reader for what... like 11 years now? Still a favorite that I try to read at least once a year. This is exciting news! I'm interested in seeing where they go with this and where they pick up the story from.

This is actually not a terrible idea, however I'd rather just have a remake with modern graphics. You could incorporate the TV part as movie sequences

Hollywood's attempts to make movies out of video games are horrid because they put a horridly low amount of effort into it even when a cool starting point is used. Contrast Halo adaptations. I remember being excited to see the live action trailers for Halo 3 from Weta Studios. They weren't cheap. Microsoft lobbed gobs of money at those trailers, and they paid off. Then they shoved money at the Forward Unto Dawn miniseries, and that was awesome. I really look forward to see what Microsoft and Ridley Scott do with Nightfall.

I hope that this Myst story has enough money thrown at it to get the right producer and directors on board. It's got some good source material and it's reputation has so far to fall if made poorly.

And for the record, the Street Fighter movie with Jean-Claude Camille François Van Varenberg was hilarious. It was terrible, but at least it's entertaining, unlike other video game adaptations (*cough*esident evi*cough*).

<< LINK REMOVED >> A big budget doesn't necessarily translate into a good movie. It's all about the people you put behind it. A talented cast and crew can pull off a movie that looks ten times its budget. Take District 9 for example.

Great game, and probably one of the more interesting premises for a series compared to other game adaptations (the books were good, anyway). But I still doubt it will turn out well - game-to-video adaptations are pretty poor affairs

If it's like my experience with the game, the character(s) will get to one new planet, then become hopelessly stuck and sit there forever inside a vehicle on a track with no discernible way out.

' we've just recently seen the Need for Speed movie << LINK REMOVED >>'

Overseas. The movie was a box office failure in America making only half it's production cost. But it did make $160 million overseas so the next sequel will have Jesse racing cars in whatever Asian country had the biggest box office for NFS.

Edit - It was China so we'll see Jesse street racing in Hong Kong in 2 years.

<< LINK REMOVED >> China is a huge market and as it continues to expand we will see more pandering towards it. Now that they also allow consoles to be sold, the road is clear for more video game movies.

Now THIS is source material worth adapting! I've always loved the backstory to Myst and especially Riven. If they can match that narrative with the crazy world design, this could be one hell of a show.

Wouldn't be badass to make a tv series filmed entirely in first person perspective? That would be interesting, at least.

The original Myst only works as a computer game. There's a sense of loneliness and wonder that cannot be conveyed except in an interactive format. Riven has enough characters and plot to work as a movie, but only if left in very capable hands (Spike Jonze or Steven Soderbergh come to mind.)

Myst 3 is the only franchise installment that I see being a successful TV miniseries. There's so much story to work with, not what you see/do in the game, but the history and wrongdoings you uncover as you progress. It would be great to see an on-screen adaptation of how things really went down.

Well, if they follow the books, it sure will be interesting with the world creation aspect...
