Classic Castlevania-Style Prequel Game For Bloodstained Revealed, Releases Very Soon

It was a graveyard smash.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is getting its own 8-bit style companion piece from Inti Creates. The retro platformer specialists promised a smaller prequel game as a stretch goal during the Kickstarter campaign, and now the studio has announced the first details. It will be called Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon, and it's coming on May 24.

Curse of the Moon features four playable characters familiar to fans of its Castlevania inspirations: Zangetsu, who uses a sword; Miriam, with a whip; Alfred, the alchemist; and Gebel, a shapeshifter who can turn into a bat. You start as Zangetsu and gain more allies as you progress, and you can swap between them at will. The more allies you have, the more versatility in combat, and you can keep progressing through a stage even if you die as long as another character remains. Stages will also have areas that only particular characters can access.

A code will be sent for free to Kickstarter backers who contributed above the requisite amount during the campaign, and it will be available for everyone else as a standalone purchase for Steam, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, 3DS, and Vita for $10.

It's a pretty clear throwback to Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse, a clever thematic way to make a prequel for Ritual of the Night, which is inspired by Symphony of the Night. That game, meanwhile, is still planned for release sometime this year. We're likely to hear more about exactly when at E3 2018.

Im tired of these new 8 bit games. Alteast make em 32 bit like SOTN or megaman X4. They still look great.

Looks more like 4-bit.

I'll bite on it still.

That's awesome it's coming to so many platforms...it gives them a chance to road-test each version.

I think I'll have to charge up the Vita for this.

Back then, I was never able to beat Castlevania 3. Playin a more modern version with probably be better with faster controls, I will probably enjoy this one a lot.

this prequel game looks better than the full game, ritual of the night! i do not like the cheap looking 3d models they are using in ritual of the night or how slow its animations are. this 8 bit game on the other hand looks much more fluid and i prefer the sprite based aesthetic. i do wonder how long it is, though. i bet it is under 5 hours but at $10 not too bad.

I just realized that the vast majority of what I've been really excited for on PS4 has been older style games like Stardew Valley, Sonic Mania, Resogun, and now this. Kind of weird when I think about it.

I still think there's a market for a Dreamcast 2. Just keep the technology simple and focus on making fun old school style games. Bring back Virtua Tennis and the 2k Sports series while we're at it!

But I digress. Curse of the Moon looks like a fun title worth 10 bucks.

It’s 2018. Why would anyone play an 8bit sidescroller now when there are so many beautiful indie sidescrollers out?

@Baconstrip78: Because unlike those try hard indie devs, this 8-bit game is coming from the king of side scrollers.

I hope this means that Bloodstained Ritual of the Night will soon follow.

I personally dont care about this Curse of the Moon 8 bit game, but that does not mean I dont want it to sell well.

Power to IGA and everyone working on everything related to Bloodstained.

I think it's funny how Konami is not suing this clone. Following the logic of these projects (considering that recent kickstarter mega-man clone that I forgot the name), as a developer you can make a virtually identical game based on a famous (or nostalgic) IP, change a little visual thing or two, that's it... You can't be sued? So for example, I can make a Shinobi clone, but instead of a white ninja, I use a green ninja and call him "Swiftstreak" or something like that and I can make some profit using the Shinobi nostalgia and their fans?

@gleencross: It's simple: for a product to be "sue material" it need to 1-1 copy a certain percentage of the original product, and still after that there is a lot of room for debate (that's why a ton of legal disputes end in nothing)

If a company could be sued for making something that is just "similar" to other product, we would only have one kind of FPS, fighting game and platformed. So in that regard things are better as they are right now (at least outside of China).

@gleencross:

Konami wouldn't be able to sue them anymore than Nintendo could sue Konami for ripping off Super Metroid in their post-SOTN games.

@gleencross: Of course. You can copyright/trademark a franchise, but not a genre or theme. Otherwise, competition would be impossible in this industry.

If Konami doesn't want the gothic 2D action/adventure-platformer money, others will gladly go for it and they should.

@Tiwill44: Sure, but the differences have to be more "substantial" in a way. Like the ninja example again, Shinobi and Ninja Gaiden follows the same genre and theme, but the IPs are different. Now this game is no different than Castlevania, especially this 8-bit "prequel" that is a clone of Castlevania 3. It sounds subjective in a way, but you have to be a fool to not see the predatory intention. This game is clearly aimed to take advantage of an already established fanbase. I know people are pissed with Konami, but it would make no difference if they are still making Castlevania games or not, that's not a excuse for this clone existence. The Gothic theme is not only limited to Vampires, there are other fantastic creatures and they can always create something new. I forgot the name of the mega-man clone, but I still remember the controversy. The fans who miss the original game, they welcome these clones with open arms. But if the clone ends up as a shitty product, the nostalgia factor is simply erased.

@gleencross: But this game was clearly made with love for the old style, don't you think? And if it's good, then how is it predatory? They simply made a good game in response to a demand that isn't being fulfilled by Konami right now.

If they had promised this and then had delivered something broken or of low quality, then yeah, it would have been predatory because the end product wouldn't have satisfied the crowd they went for. But otherwise, I don't see the problem.

I'm more interested in this game then Bloodstained Ritual of the Night. The reason is that I love the classic Castlevania games rather then the Metroidvania style games that started in Castlevania Symphony of the Night. Hope they make a 16 bit version one day that plays similar to Super Castlevania 4.

Looks AMAZING! Anyone who has ever loved "Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse" must be creaming their jeans right alongside me!

Above and beyond what I expected from a Kickstarter goal, makes me even more excited for the main game if they were able to peel off time and energy to make this.

@Swampthing: It's an old (and yes, overly dirty) common expression.

See "blowing my mind" and "killing me", similarly extreme-sounding colorful language... Not intended to be taken literally.

This... actually looks amazing. And it doesn't seem too difficult, which is nice. I love the SOTN-like 2D Castlevanias, but the old ones were just a bit too hard for my liking, mostly due to the limited moveset and jump/attack angle. But count me in on this. Also, that character switching mechanic is really cool, it adds character and depth to the moveset.

A new game I really want and it comes out in 12 days for super cheap? Tonight is a good night.
