Classic Sega Games From Genesis To Dreamcast Are Going Free (With Ads) On Mobile

You'll be able to download games from every Sega console on your phone.

Sega is bringing a catalog of its classic games to mobile devices via a new service called Sega Forever. The service will encompass titles from every era of Sega consoles, including Master System, Genesis, Game Gear, Sega Saturn, and Dreamcast.

Each game available through Sega Forever will be free to download and features in-game ads. Like the recent mobile release of Crazy Taxi, however, players have the option to remove the ads via a $2 in-app purchase per game. Every title will also support new features such as leaderboards, cloud saves, offline play, and controller support.

As the comment below mentioned, touch controls are horrible.

I tried to get my 8bitdo SNES30 to work and didnt seem to with the Sonic game.

Can anyone confirm if they do? Perhaps I did something wrong...

Kid chameleon was (is) a great game. We should revisit that as an HD remake.

PSII was/is great, but I don't know about ads.... Kinda breaks the pleasure of the grind to see a viagra ad bone its way into your eyeholes.

Can you pick games that are actually playable on a touch screen, or retool games so that they work better on a touch screen? Phantasy Star 2 is perfectly playable on a touch screen. You don't need precise controls and you don't need to react to anything quickly. For a rework that can work, you can retool something like Space Harrier. Make it so that you can tap anywhere on the screen to fire, remove the ability to move, and have the objective be to shoot down obstacles that are in your way, shoot down enemies, and shoot down their incoming projectiles. It would work so much better than trying to give people a virtual joystick and a button.

@jinzo9988: I disagree; virtual gamepads usually work pretty well IMO. The issue happens when it overlays on playable area.

I would be PISSED if someone removed movement from Space Harrier or Afterburner.

I like that the games are free but c'mon you're offering this on the wrong platform Sega. Last I remember all gamers own a nifty machine called a game console, not a smartphone.

@leeko_link: This is a different demo they just want to tap into without much cost behind it. lets re-release our old games on mobile devices to get paid for advertising. Its a smart move. Nintendo should do the same. I do wish some of these games would be re released on consoles with updated graphics.

@dev-raid1: Some of these will definitely attach to a significant non-gamer audience; Sega will pay for store placement.

@dev-raid1: More people but 70% of them don't play games on mobile and if they do they are probably little kids that don't know any better or are casual people who just play a quick game and be done with it. Also those who want to play classic Sega games on smartphones probably already got that for free with emulator from the app store anyways. They'll ask themselves why should I play Sonic the Hedgehog on this service with ads popping out when I could just pop in the rom on an emulator and play it the same way for free without ads?

Screw mobile!! Give me this on ANY console and you'll get my money. I can't stand touch screen controls!!!!!!! Come on SEGA!! Where is this "Amazing SEGA" that you've been building up? There must be more. I'm a SEGA fanboy for life, but this stings a little.

@streetmagik: thougg i agree the touch screen controls suck badly, the mobile devices need to do something about that in entirety not just a handful of shit games already compatible.

Yet you'de think something like house of the dead would kinda translate well to a touch screen game.

@streetmagik: Many/most of these have been on current consoles for years. I played PSII again last year, as well as reminding myself that Altered Beast was ALWAYS a cheap quarter-vacuum. Cheap, cheap deaths and bad controls... Nostalgia!

@Pyrosa: That's true, but just like everyone who dogs Sony for not having backwards compatibility, it be nice if I could have all these games in one place, instead of digging out and hooking up my older systems. I still have a lot of these games, but I'd really prefer them optimized for my tv. Have you ever hooked a GENESIS to a 4k tv? It's not pretty my friend, lol.

@streetmagik: Oh Im sure you will have that option. The initial target is the ad money but they will take yours as collateral and then your game will be ad free. Kid Chameleon is what Im waiting on.... I will totally pay for that.

@craigtl: I was going to give you a thumbs up, but apparently that emoji doesn't exist. I have a poop emoji, and a no bells emoji, but no thumbs up?!? ? Seriously, what the hell is that?? Is it anti Taco Bell, or just a "no bells allowed" symbol?!? There is some organization that comes up with, and votes on emoji uniformity, but somehow they forgot the thumbs up. Sorry for my rant, I just wanted to give you the thumbs up, showing I agree with you. Kid Chameleon was great. Damn emojis!!

@streetmagik: Its a free service, they wont be getting your money.

There are plenty of Sega classic compilations on various consoles and PC Sega already offer, at a price of course where you can spend your money.

@itchyflop: it's free "with adds". I'd gladly pay the $2 for the add free experience. Also, I have some of these compilations, but they definitely do not have every SEGA game from every SEGA console (I have emulators for that). Don't get me wrong, this is my knee jerk reaction. I'm still SEGA 4 life.

@streetmagik: my humblest apologies i meant no negativity, maybe there will be an ad free version released?.

I have not got the compilations, however I do have every Sega original console (Europe) including a 1st generation Sega mega-drive still working with over 150 games and im still buying, I lost loads of the games in my teens lending them out, a couple of which are rare today like musha which i wont pay £1000 for :(

You can't beat the original, though emulators are great way to play away from home, it used to be the gg or nomad with the battery packs weighing you down :)

@itchyflop: It's cool man, no bad intentions received (and hopefully given). I was just pointing out for the $2, the adds can be removed. I'd be more than happy to give SEGA more money on a system I could actually play these games on. Who am I kidding? I'll probably have all of them on my phone and tablet anyways. I remember my parents looking at me like a weirdo when I asked for the SEGA master system for Christmas. They were like, "are you sure you wouldn't rather have the NES"? In America, nobody had the master system. I had family in England and saw it (I was 5-6). I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I've owned every system from there on.

@streetmagik: :)

Is that a possibility for £2? Again i either haven't read the article properly or are you generalizing as with most apps of this nature? I understand your point completely if you can remove the adds, touch screen isn't the best.

Yeah Nintendo were big in the 80s/90s in america with the robot ads i remember, over here in sunny England i don't think i knew anyone with a Nintendo, with Sega dominating Europe, Sega were slow to compete over in the US.

I yearned for one as a kid but was happy to receive a master system then mega-drive (genesis) after. AHA"blast processing".

Im still very fond of my genesis and still as to this day haven't finished gun-star heroes, herzog zwei and a few others.

I wanted shinobi 3 but its like £60 (and going up).

Nostalgic days of buying eternal champions and street fighter for £60 and 2 6 button controllers at £30 each (in the 90's that was a lot).

Ill leave it there i could be here a while, massive Sega fan here too.

Have a good weeken end :)

@streetmagik: ok thanks for the info.

Interestingly i went on the psn store over the weekend and the games listed on Apple store (uk) are the same on the psn store, also approximately the same price as if you had ad free on apple.

good chatting to you :)

It'll be interesting to see what all comes to this service and maybe if it does well enough it could branch out to consoles. Doubt we will see Power Stone or Shenmue or Sonic Adventure from Dreamcast, that's probably asking too much.

What's the point? Who is really going to pay 2 bucks to eliminate ads for a game that they most likely played multiple times and own(ed) on multiple platforms? I'll stick with the emulator

@Daveof89: but like he said. Real gamers have already downloaded emulators with the game files to play these games as they existed on the consoles for free with no advertising what so ever. The process is complicated at times depending on what system you are trying to emulate but when it works its awesome. I had a playstation emulator on my galaxy S3 and once i configured the controller the way that worked best for me, I was enjoying many classics right on my phone. Most notably Metal Gear Solid. The game looked and played exactly as it did on the PS1 no problems.

I hope they bring out tons of Saturn and Dreamcast games and just overall a vast amount in general to gauge more interest and possibly revive dead or dormant IP's onto consoles/PC. I'd love for a remake to Panzer Dragoon Saga.
