Clubs, arrows, guns strike Virtual Console

NES Open Tournament Golf swings onto Wii's downloadable-game service, accompanied by TG-16 titles World Sports Competition and Bloody Wolf.

Between Streets of Rage 2, Zelda 2, and Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the last few Virtual Console updates have been replete with big names and universally recognized classics. However, this week Nintendo is digging a bit deeper into its licensed catalog, surfacing a few lesser-known titles from the Nintendo Entertainment System and TurboGrafx-16.

Published by Nintendo in 1991, NES Open Tournament Golf was the second golfing game to come out on the NES in the US, with the first being the titular Golf back in 1985. NES Open Tournament Golf lets gamers guide Mario through three different courses, which are set in the US, UK, and Japan. Players also have access to three different modes: match play, stroke play, and tournament. NES Open Tournament Golf supports up to two players and can be purchased for 500 Wii points ($5).

With disciplines that include shooting, archery, rowing, swimming, and track and field, Hudson's World Sports Competition brings 18 Olympic events to the TurboGrafx-16. The game features an Olympic mode that spans all of the events and a training mode, where players can hone their skills in preparation for the world stage in individual events. Up to five players can compete in World Sports Competition, and it runs for 600 Wii points ($6).

Rounding out this week is the TG-16 port of the run-and-gun arcade shooter Bloody Wolf from Data East. Tasked with rescuing the president from his kidnappers, players take on the role of a commando in a special forces team. Players accomplish the mission with a variety of weapons, including machine guns, knives, bazookas, and grenades. Though this version includes a more detailed story than its arcade predecessor, it lacks the original's two-player mode. Bloody Wolf is available on the VC for 600 Wii points ($6).

Can't satisfy everyone. The VC's selection is doing just fine. I agree that Chrono Trigger, Shining Force and Super Mario Bros. 3 are better selections, but they'll come out all in good time. Anyone who's only bought 3 or 4 Virtual Console games so far obviously wasn't gaming when these games came out. There are at least 20 games on the Virtual Console that consistantly make the "best games of all time" lists. The trouble with retro gaming is that most of the time "you had to be there." For those of us that were, the Virtual Console is everything it should be.

I am eagerly awaiting the day when i can download a title for the simple reason of really wanting to play that title, instead of doing it just to further justify buying the damn system in the first place. Is anyone else feeling me on this? I have 4 games on my VC so far, and its not from the lack of looking. The only title i had wontonly downloaded was Star Fox 64. The other 3 (which i wont mention for risk of embarresment) were just so i could say, yeah, im utilizing as many of the Wii features as possible so as to maximize my $250. Oh well.

Licensing issues notwithstanding, here's my wish list... NES: - Bionic Commando - Mega Man 2 - Castlevania 3 - Battletoads - RC Pro-Am SNES: - Super Metroid - Chrono Trigger - Final Fantasy III (Jp. VI) - Street Fighter 2: Turbo - Super Mario RPG N64: - Perfect Dark - Banjo-Kazooie - TLOZ: Majora's Mask - Rogue Squadron - Pilotwings 64 Genesis: - Night Trap (Sega CD) - Jurassic Park - Revenge of Shinobi - Strider - Shining Force TG-16: - Um, any of the SNK duo titles... sorry never really played TG-16. As an asside, where's the emulation support for Gameboy, Gameboy Color and Gameboy Advance? You know, if the Big N wants to get really nasty, the powers that be should even consider a little Sega Master System, NEO GEO, 3DO and even some Jaguar action down the road...

I'm disgusted with the recent slate of VC games. I see too many Turbografx games and not enough NES, SNES, Genesis, and 64 games. Let's go already! Where are the Square games? What aboutt some of the Sega Shining games? I though Shining in the Darkness was forthcoming?! Kids these days should see such classics such as Shining Force and Chrono Trigger... Let's go already!

None of these games really appeal to me. In fact almost all of the games on the Virtual Console I either allready own or don't care about. And the only games I really want to see on VC are Super Mario Bros 3 and Star Fox.

Ho-hum. It's certainly been a while since I've been interested in buying a game from the Virtual Console. They could at least have a bigger name each week, along with two lesser-known games, rather than three mediocre ones.

Who is Mario?! I've seen the name sooo many times, but I still aint got no clue who he is. Maybe I should Wiki it... Anyway, I agree with xcollecter. They should make more 'strawberry' games available for download. Because if I were to play any of these, I would be doing myself a great injustice. I guess I'm just being a typical techie, when I say that, I would rather play more advanced games.

Pffh, are you kidding me? Like Rare is making any money at MS anyway. They even said themselves that Rare titles like Viva Pinata fell short of profit goals.

DonutTrooper that is not going to happen. Rare is owned by microsoft. They won't put their games on a nintendo console. Just so you arn't waiting an eternity for something that is never going to happen.

Thinking about getting NES Open Tournament Golf. They should put World Class Track Meet for download on the VC. They would have to come out with the Power Pad accessory especially for the Wii. That was a fun game.

NES Open is a good time. I remember getting First place on an Expert 36 Hole Tournament, and it gave me $80,000. Later, I got $1 million and filled up all the replay slots, even the five albatross slots. Great game.

Bloody Wolf was one of the top action games of it's time. It was the answer to Sega genesis's MERCS. Two player co-op and the music make this a must buy. Those who say otherwise never really played it, or couldn't beat it.

Still wainting on Earthbound as well. One of the best games that I don't own. I'm getting rather disappointed with the VC. They update it with three games a week, and usually two of those aren't even worth 100 points, much less 500+. Nintendo needs to stop scraping the bottom of the barrel already.

I used to play NES Open. It kept track of all your stats which was cool. I think someone bumped my system when I was playing and everything was erased. (It was one of those 'press reset while you turn power off' games). I guess I wouldnt have to worry about that on the VC. Speaking of Earthbound, I thought it was going to be released a couple weeks back because according to this site, it came out June 1st (or something). I thought they would release it on the anniversary day. Oh well. Patience is virtue and so on.

Actually, nghtcrwlr821, maybe not for a while. Nintendo Power showed Zelda II for Virtual Console months ago, but the game just came out a couple of weeks ago. Although they announced Paper Mario this month, the game probably won't get released until a couple of months down the road.
