COD On Game Pass Is Not Guaranteed, Microsoft Having Internal Debates About It - Report

The next Call of Duty game may not be on Game Pass according to a new report about Microsoft.

When Microsoft closed its acquisition of Activision Blizzard last year, some players assumed this meant that the next installment in the Call of Duty franchise would hit Game Pass on day one of its release. But according to a new report, that may not be the case. Per the report, Microsoft has had "internal debates" about whether to put Call of Duty's latest releases on Game Pass. Call of Duty is one of the top-selling video game series in the world, and there is apparently concern that placing the next title on Game Pass will only hurt its revenue stream.

Per the report from The Verge, Microsoft has considered another increase of the price of Game Pass Ultimate. Since a final decision hasn't been made, "[it] could mean we still see a future Call of Duty release appear in most versions of Game Pass."

Microsoft placed a large bet on Game Pass to close the gap between Xbox and PlayStation 5 this generation, and that wager has fallen well short of the goal. Not only are Xbox console sales far behind PS5, but Game Pass subscriptions are also declining. Game Pass itself has been blamed for negatively impacting sales of games like Hi-Fi Rush. That goes a long way towards explaining why Microsoft and Activision might think twice before risking the same downward trend for Call of Duty.

This news comes on the heels of Microsoft's decision to close down Arkane Austin, Tango Gameworks, and Alpha Dog Games--all of which were affiliated with Bethesda. And there may be more layoffs among Xbox-affiliated studios that raise further questions about the viability of Microsoft's gaming strategy.

The next Call of Duty is expected to be released this October or November

Doubtful they put COD on gamepass at launch, when they have to take Sony lunch money due to the deal signed last year. They can make hundreds of millions of 70 bucks sales and then put COD with all maps on gamepass a few years later.

How much sony paid for this article to gamespot, never heard of this blair sony pawn.

@rohanrocks88: That was before they released a whole bunch of gutterballs. And realized, "Oh $hit, CoD is the only thing we have left to actually make bank.".

Bro, game pass was already proven to be a failure. I mean, I just don't get it. Why would thee single most successful game company, other than Rockstar, sell out to Microsoft? Did I miss something? They didn't need financial help. Why, Activision, why?

great news, and im an xbox fan. My desire is for xbox to be healthy and profitable. While I love gamepass and willing to continue paying for it, its obvious that putting big games on there day and date is severely hurting sales. This would be an acceptable thing IF your gamepass subscriptions were growing. But just look...everyone is still jumping to the playstation, the system that has no games, and is terrible compared to xbox and the value that xbox provides. Yet people still prefer playstation, and don't see the point of gamepass. Its time to scale back gamepass.

What is the point of putting games like hi fi rush on gamepass, if nobody buys the game, and then an year later you shut down the studio?? A game like hi fi rush, a critical hit to boot. My suggestion is, be careful of what games you put on gamepass. Older games and some indies definitely make sense. Newer games, either provide a demo or a couple of levels to entice people to purchase the game instead.

@itsnota2mer: they give us xbox fans so much, that I feel bad about it. It's not even about paid or not anymore, we gamepass subscribers are given an embarrassment of riches. It's gotten to a point where I'm questioning their business decisions. If getting rid of day one, means more profitable and sustainable xbox, I'm 100% all for it.

@blaznwiipspman1: people play on PlayStation because unlike xbox, has tons of games 😽, i agree gamepass hurts the industry by not actually being that great of a value unless you only play on xbox only and accept their bubble as your whole gaming world

@rohanrocks88: nope, there's zero evidence foe that. The Playstation has been an utter disaster this gen, with very few or no games. 3rd party was the saving grace, but xbox completely blows Playstation out of the water with gamepass 3rd party games. It's not even a contest. The reality is, Playstation 5 is just sailing off the success of the ps4, and that's about it. As someone who owned a ps4, and sees no reason to buy a ps5, let alone a ps6.

just put it on there on the microsoft store and doesn't require the battle.net launcher, since most people would still buy season passes and operator skins anyway.

Why not just put last year's on there, like EA does with their titles and EA Play?
