Convicted Murderer Says Video Games Made Killings Easier

His three victims were beaten badly and shot in the head.

An Idaho man, 22-year-old Adam Dees, convicted of murdering three people told authorities this week that his "addiction" to violent first-person shooter video games made the crime easier to commit.

From the Ada County Sheriff's Department blog: "When asked specifically about the murders, Dees said it wasn't that difficult for him to because he had done so much killing in video games."

No Caption Provided

As part of a plea agreement, Dees was required to provide more details to investigators about the March murders of 80-year-old Ted Welp, 77-year-old Elaine Welp, and their son, 52-year-old Thomas Welp. There was no mention of the specific games that Dees was reportedly "addicted" to.

He also told detectives that he was depressed and suicidal when he carried out the murders. He robbed and murdered the Welp family after finding their high-end home on Google Maps

According to KTVB, all three victims were "found badly beaten and shot in the head."

Dees is taking medication for bipolar disorder. KVTB also quotes a counselor at Riverside Behavioral Health, Jaime McManus, as saying that people with existing mental illness conditions may be more likely to be affected by entertainment such as video games.

"If you are relatively healthy and socially stable child, you may do just fine being exposed to video games," she said. "If you already have some difficulties, emotionally or social, you may really need some limits."

Dees will soon be moved to the Idaho Department of Correction, where he will serve three consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.

some people simply can't differentiate fantasy from reality and whenever such a person gets on the news it's the fantasy (video games in this case as is so commonly the case with crimes) that gets blamed and not the persons irl problems such as having mental problems.

it's why i don't like news channels since with them it's always blame the video games first and only later on shift the attention to the real problems such as the person/people in question being messed up in the head.

That's like a football player being arrested for assault because he keeps tackling everyone outside of the game. But football made is so much easier for me!

@shellcap: uh, no... if a sports fan ever started going around doing that kind of stuff randomly, i'd report him too. then i'd probably stop to wonder what kind of mental problems that "fan" likely had. unfortunately, the media doesn't usually work that way. with things like the media, it's blame the easier target first (video games, the sports, etc.) then later shift the attention to any real problems the person/people in question might've had. just like what FOX NEWS and likely other news channels do whenever theres a shooting crime somewhere and theres even the slightest mention of video games ANYWHERE.

No morals or value for life is what made it easier. If you can't seperate game world from real world then you need to be locked up or shot if it makes you go around killing people.

It's becoming VERY apparent to me, that Eddie is the SJW journalist at large, within GameSpot. I am 99 percent right, when guessing if he wrote the article, when I see the headline.

Maybe the next one will say "Harry Potter will make your kids practice witchcraft!". Go all the way, Ed.

Convicted murderer, with questionable intelligence (because, you know, he killed people) says video games made killing easier & we don't question what he says.
Even if, you know, he killed people.

Not to mention how:
"When asked specifically about the murders, Dees said it wasn't that difficult for him to because he had done so much killing in video games."
Shows how the guy suffered from a mental disorder to start with.

There goes another one, ruining video games for the rest of us. Giving games a bad rep because someone couldn't keep their shit together. In the immortal words of Morty Smith, Sr., "Get your shit together, get it all together and put it in a backpack - all your shit so it's together. And if you gotta take it some where, take it some where ya know? Take it to the shit store and sell it or put it in a shit museum. I don't care what you do, you just gotta get it together. Get your shit together."

Video games does not make killing easier.... nor does guns.. nor does owning any material that can be used as a weapon. Untreated mental illness makes killing easier you incompetent psychopath.

@ggregd: You can't reason with an unstable person, nothing they do is reasonable. The person said video games made it easier, not that games were the root cause of his deranged mind.

Think about it if someone had to be killed it's not that crazy to think video games could desensitize you and affect your hesitation. What's crazy is thinking that video games can make you WANT to kill.

It's clear that this person was miserable, violent and sadistic even without games being involved. Someone that would search up a random home full of seniors than rob and beat them to death is a psychopath not a gamer.

This article is just giving games a bad rep

@Snyper22: Look at Eddie's other articles. He's an SJW, in the vein of Sarkeesian. Sex in games is bad. Violence in video games is bad. Blah blah blah.

For whatever kernel of truth there may be to something, they always blow it way out of proportion. And I don't believe video games make it "easier" to kill someone. Whatever, man.

It's true that video gaming might help you in murder. The same way it helped me save my own life when a drunk driver crashed into me at full speed in the highway at night, I reacted correctly thanks to racing games and i'm pretty sure it saved my life.

Video games educate us in lots of ways.

@Armyboy5: I'd actually like to hear more about your accident and what steps you took to avoid it being worse if you're willing? I've heard of a number of fatal accidents where there was either a suicidal driver that wanted to take someone with them or they were completely drunk and driving into oncoming traffic.

"I've killed loads of people. I gotta say, reading about it in books in history class made the task so much easier." Funny huh, you can replace books with just about any form of creative entertainment and get the same effect. TV, Movies, Newspapers, public records, internet, rumors, email chain letters, etc...

Google Maps is to blame, if anyone.

Imagine all the rich people shivering right now and anxisously writing to Google in attempt to delete their mansions from the maps.

So how come he wasn't in jail already for the murders he committed when he wasn't addicted to video games? I mean he obviously must have killed a few people before he started gaming otherwise how would he know that playing games affected his ability to kill? That would mean he was just talking out of his ass otherwise.

@Dessicator: Yeah he was talking out of his ass, blaming it on something else in hopes to get a lighter sentence. I mean it must be a real challenge to kill the elderly right? All those gaming sessions I'm sure came in handy. He's an idiot.

He's just finding an outlet to understanding why he acted out. Games provide him that excuse. Games had nothing to do with what he did. He just wants to provoke controversy and bring attention to possible mental insanity so he can fool around with our political system. Maybe he's hoping for a lenient sentence.

I hope he rots in jail. This kind of people want to ruin everything to everyone when they're beyond help. But for the people who can still be helped, I hope US put more importance in mental health issues instead of defense.
