Toys For Bob, which was acquired by Microsoft in late 2023 as part of the Activision Blizzard acquisition, has announced that it has gone independent.

Toys For Bob, the developer behind Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time, has announced that it is going independent. This comes a few months after it was acquired by Microsoft as part of the Activision Blizzard acquisition and in the wake of massive layoffs at Xbox.

Announced in a blog post, Toys For Bob is becoming an independent studio, spinning out from underneath Microsoft. While there are no details about what sort of deal was made to gain independence, the blog post does state that Toys For Bob is currently in talks to partner with Microsoft on future projects. The blog post also reveals that Toys For Bob is in the early stages of developing its next game, although it's not clear if it will be a new IP.

Now Playing: What We Learned From The Xbox Business Update

"And while we’re in the early days of developing our next new game and a ways away from making any announcements, our team is excited to develop new stories, new characters, and new gameplay experiences," the studio said in the post.

As reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, 86 employees were laid off from Toys For Bob as part of Microsoft's 10,000 layoffs in January. It was also reported that the studio's office was closed, moving those remaining to remote work. Prior to its work on Crash Bandicoot, Toys For Bob was best known for the Skylanders series. In recent years, it has primarily worked as a support studio for Call of Duty.

Toys For Bob might not be the only studio gaining independence, as recent reports suggest that both Saber Interactive and Gearbox might be sold by Embracer Group in the coming weeks.

Microsoft has become a cancer to the gaming industry, EVERY company they swallow up ends up crap. This started back with Rare when the first xbox came out. I've said this since the xbox was announced, xbox will ruin the console gaming industry and eventually turn into Sega. fast forward over 20 years and here we are. Physical disc's on their way out. paying for something you never truly own approaching. Purchasing of giant companies to try and stay relavent.

@mediastupid1: Isn't Sony guilty of the same exact things? Pumping insane budgets into unsustainable AAA games, blocking games from reaching wider audiences and killing off their own IP they deem not worthy of their portfolio (most of which are classic beloved PlaytStation franchises)?

@mcnichoj: I'm not a Sony fanboy, hell, I don't even have a PS5, but Sony is loads better than Microsoft. They have not made any company worse. Look at Bethesda(Starfield) and Arkane (Redfall). In the past they bought Skype and Virtual PC. Virtaual PC was the competitor to VMWare. Look at where VMware is and where Virtual PC is, nowhere. At the bottom of bin somewhere.

@moh_sakhaii: Redfall was started before the MS acquisition and was done by a different portion of Arkane than the rest of their games, with key staff members leaving during development.
I don't care about some Windows emulator thing I don't use but I do care about how Sony is running the Spider-Man universe via movies into the ground.

@mcnichoj: I don't see Sony swallowing up companies and running them into the ground and having a horrible marketing department. Xbox was created out of jealousy and it has ran its course. spensor was part of the brilliance that crashed Sega back in late 90s early 00s. History repeats itself. Nintendo created playstation but stabbing Sony in the back at the last minute. Xbox was created by the child molester gates, because he was afraid ps2 might get into pc gaming.
