Crysis 3, Dragon Age 2, Mirror's Edge Catalyst And More EA Games Are Coming To Steam

The EA subscription service that offers free games, trials, and discounts will be available through Steam.

EA's subscription service, EA Access, is officially making its way to Steam. The news coincides with the release of a handful of new EA-published games on the service, although some of its heaviest hitters--Apex Legends, FIFA 20, Battlefield V, and so on--remain Origin-only on PC.

Notably, the service on Steam will be called EA Access, mimicking the naming convention used for the Xbox One and PS4 versions. PC already has its own version of EA Access, dubbed Origin Access, that operates through the EA-run Origin store.

Origin Access has expanded since its initial launch to offer two versions: Basic and Premier. Basic functions much like EA Access on consoles, offering 10-hour trials to upcoming games, unlimited access to a selection of games in the Vault, and discounts on Origin purchases. Premier, meanwhile, adds in full access to brand-new games.

Word of EA Access's launch on Steam initially came by way of an image on the store page for the newly launched EA games on the store. As you can see below, it suggests that EA Access on Steam will work like Origin Access Basic; the Premier version would presumably require that all EA games launch immediately on Steam. The publisher has avoided doing that with many of its releases since the debut of Origin, although there have been exceptions--last year's Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order did land on Steam.

As noted above, EA has released a number of new games (along with their DLC) on Steam today. These include:

  • Burnout Paradise Remastered
  • Crysis 3
  • Dragon Age Inquisition
  • Dragon Age 2
  • Fe
  • Mirror's Edge Catalyst
  • need for Speed
  • Need for Speed Heat
  • Need for Speed Rivals
  • Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville
  • Sea of Solitude
  • Unravel
  • Unravel 2

Most of these are on sale at a discount of 50% or more from now until July 9.

An exact release date for EA Access on Steam has not been announced, but the company said in a press release that it's due out this summer. The newly added games are also just the first of 25-plus that are on the way, as Command & Conquer Remastered Collection will also hit Steam with Steam Workshop support.

EA may be planning to share more during its upcoming EA Play showcase, which is currently set to take place on June 11. We'll report back as soon as more is shared.

This could be good news for me, but EA has stopped making compelling games. Well, Titanfall 2 and Mass effect andromeda were some of those last efforts, but I purchased them in retail thanks to some bad experiences with Origin and better pricing for their physical copies, and they weren't even pre-owned. If your product can't be better in any aspect, why should I purchase it?

I’ve always thought it was a missed opportunity for EA to not give access (pun intended) to their backlog of games. I would sign up to be able to play mutant league football, Roadrash, Crusader, Future Cop and the Desert Strike series...

I hated Origin when it first came out, but after a while, it became a pretty decent launcher. Steam had major issues when it first released, too.

I have my squabbles with EA, like most gamers. I gave EA Access a go a while back to test it, and it was actually well worth the money for people who want to play some games that they don't really wanna spend $50+ on.

@RELeon: I agree as they all operate on the same levels and that is not bad. I use it as an demo testing subscription.

Origin during its early days, was a steaming pile of crap. They have, after many many years of lawsuits, and journalist outing their code, changed for the better. Steam just get so many more eyes then what EA origins site will ever get.

I try to use gog games whenever possible.

@jenovaschilld: I agree about GOG as I have many games on that site. The problem is the DRM which GOG tries to avoid promoting. I like how it has the old schools games many of them I still have on Floppy or CD but have to jerry rig them to play.

@tsunami2311: You still need Origin. So not much point to buy it on steam when you have to run 2 launchers at the same time. Just get EA Games on origin. I've been doing that for years.

Can we just get EA Big games like Def Jam and SSX 3, or some of the classics like Need for Speed Underground and Fight Night?

I guess I'll have to support their strange Steam initiative since they support one of mines. But why do I have to have Origin running as well as Steam. It makes no sense.

@lonesamurai00: Ubisoft is the same with they Steam/Uplay stuff. It sort of defeats the purpose of having it on Steam. Except for maybe just to help keep games organized in one playlist, rather than having to open a bunch of clients to see what you have. Otherwise, it is kind of pointless to put things on Steam that you still require other launchers for.

@RELeon: You're not buying EA and Ubisoft games on Steam, you're buying EA and Ubisoft games through Steam.
