Electronic Arts and Crytek initiated a final countdown today on the launch of their upcoming PC first-person shooter Crysis Warhead. A stand-alone follow-up to last year's critically acclaimed Crysis, Warhead is set to launch in North America on September 16, preceded by a European release on September 12.

Crysis Warhead puts players into the nanosuit of Sergeant "Psycho" Sykes, who deployed to a different side of the island than the original game's protagonist. Psycho apparently arrived on the island better equipped, given that he will have access to an expanded array of customizable weapons and vehicles. New "Crysis Wars" multiplayer modes have also been added.

Warhead is the first product of Crytek's Budapest studio. It will retail for $29.95, although gamers who preorder the game from the EA Store will receive a $5 discount. For more on Warhead, check back tonight for GameSpot's exclusive Q&A on the game's multiplayer modes.
