Cyberpunk 2077 Dev Admits Poor Performance On PS4 And Xbox One, Offers Refunds And Future Patches

In a statement, CD Projekt Red says a couple of patches for Cyberpunk 2077 are planned. PS4 and Xbox One owners can get refunds, citing bad technical performance.

Despite a series of delays for polish for Cyberpunk 2077, the game itself has been performing poorly from a technical standpoint on current-gen Xbox One and PlayStation 4 systems. This means very low frame rates, game-affecting bugs, graphical glitches, and game crashes, all of which have rendered it largely unplayable for many using base-level consoles. It's been bad enough to the point that developer CD Projekt Red itself issued an official statement on the matter, and mentioned options for players who have been unsatisfied with the experience. [Update: CD Projekt Red has now acknowledged that it doesn't have a special arrangement to facilitate Cyberpunk 2077 refunds, as well as that it didn't spend enough time on the PS4 and Xbox One versions.]

The statement begins as an apology, but subsequently promises a series of patches to improve the experience on Xbox One and PS4. CD Projekt Red says that an update is planned in the next seven days and smaller updates will be released when they're ready. The team also said that two large patches are planned for Cyberpunk 2077--the first in January and a second in February--that promise to address the larger problems players have faced in the base-console versions.

Lastly, CD Projekt Red is offering refunds. Those who purchased the game digitally will have to go through the respective routes on Xbox and PlayStation ecosystems to do so, and those with physical copies can go to their respective retailers. If that's not possible, the developer is also offering help directly where you can contact the company at helpmerefund@cdprojektred.com up until December 21 this year.

You can view the full statement from CD Projekt Red on the situation of Cyberpunk 2077's technical performance and refund options below.

This isn't the first time the game has shown issues in need of fixing--the latest patch, version 1.04, addressed seizure-inducing scenes affecting those with epilepsy, music copyright issues for content creators, and a number of other problems.

Games are delayed for a myriad of reasons (I am sure I don't know them all) but when a game is delayed 4-6 weeks before launch it is usually because the testers found a bug that breaks the game. Well, got news for you nitpicky reviewers who have been just short of criminal here, this happened a few times for this game. It's not as though CDPR or anyone ever tried to make a game this dense (many games may be larger but none are even close to the population density of cyberpunk not even remotely). This game is fallout but the world didn't end yet it's just missing a few mechanics (settlement building, more weapon modifying etc). Newsflash, those games are all buggy as hell and those people have been making those kind of games for decades. All those games but one (the garbage they named Fallout 76) got 9s and 10s/10 buggy as they were...but not this one for whatever reason...

I'd say this is good for a first try and given their previous games and the way they supported them, this game will only get more and more polished in the next couple months. The negative attention this game is getting astounds me. Also this sort of negative attention causes good developers to stop trying to push the envelope and what results is what we have now...a few good games and A MILLION STUPID DAMN BATTLE ROYAL TEAM SHOOTERS THAT ARE ALL THE FREAKIN SAME. Review bomb those turkeys. Not this.

@fud_sang: The game is so broken, Sony has officially pulled the game from the PS store so that no one can purchase it now. And they are offering full refunds to anyone who purchased the digital version.

I respect your opinion, but you're picking the wrong hill to die on here.

@thecupidstunts: There is no doubt they could have done this better. There was a time when MC was talking about games that may be exclusive to the Box one X. PS could likely have done the same with the pro. Let me tell ya, this should have been one of those games. Devs are in a tight spot. Releases currently still go across ALL platforms. Well where once there was only one set of consoles, now games must work efficiently on 3 different sets(xbox one/ps4, xbox1x/ps4pro, and SeriesXS/PS5). One look at how the game plays on the Series X or PS5 and you would know for this game that's hardly possible on consoles that can barely do the 4k thing. I play on a series x so the game plays very well and is a good game for it. Didn't know it was quite so bad on the low end consoles but it makes sense. Also didn't know sony pulled it...yikes.

So delay the game again? Til after the holidays maybe? Sure but for what? They're not going to be able to make a game like this on the low end consoles without cutting away some of the game. Patch like that could be months away. But they had to release, it was getting out of hand. Game was delayed half a hundred times.

That was simply a case of a dev that couldn't handle their own hype.

Simple question please: I am more interested in the performance over graphics. How does the game "perform" on a One X at 1080p? Thanks in advance

However both systems have the same issue. bad frame drops and the controls don't work half the time.

I gotta say, I'm 30-40 hrs in on PC. Lots of glitches... LOTS. It's still a fun game though and I can't put it down. Says something about the core experience.

If you haven't bought it yet, maybe wait until February when all the kinks get worked out. It might be your favorite game at that point.

a couple things I noticed now that I've played it more...

For the record, I am playing it on PS4 Pro

The release version of the game was godawful. The graphics were terrible, and the bugs and glitches were almost akin to WWE 2K20. It was virtually unplayable in certain spots.

Then we got the newest patch. It fixed the graphics significantly, and the game seems to run much better than before, however there are still some game breaking glitches, pop-in textures, frame rate issues and delay.

One thing I mistook for a glitch however was the fact that I couldn't run anymore. I was slowed down to a mere slow walk. I thought it was unresponsiveness from the controller due to a glitch, but I realized I had too much inventory. Once I offloaded some excess guns, I was able to run and sprint again.

Another thing I noticed, which is obvious when you think about it, Whenever you get into the badlands surrounding the city, the game runs flawlessly. Extremely responsive, no glitches, smooth frame rate, etc...Obviously there's not much to render in the badlands since it's virtually empty lol.

Despite the bugs, I am having fun with the game, and I do hope to have a PS5 soon where I know it'll run even better. Hopefully soon they'll release a true next gen version.

Besides the Miyamoto rule stated below, another important rule CDPR should've followed was: "don't listen to the graphic whores".

First, you should release a game that is stable and runs at an acceptable frame rate on current gen consoles and PC's. Which A GREAT VAST majority of people own... 60 FPS and 1080p. Not 4K, which is only owned by very a few lucky / elitist / privileged / rich people. AND THEN, if the said people (graphic whores) start complaining (it won't be loud, since they're very few), ONLY THEN you release some graphic patches that will pop their eyes out... CDPR did the exact opposite (the elitist way) , and pissed off the vast majority of consumers.

"Damn CDPR... Your ass used to be beautiful".

30 fps is the trade off we want for base ps4 running a good looking (enough) non multiplayer game ffs

@nilsdoen: 60 FPS on 1080p, mind you (NOT 4K)... If it's stable 30 FPS (like Spiderman, for example... and PLUS, on 4K), I'll take it, sure!! But a game like Cyberpunk, 30 FPS on 1080p is unacceptable IMO, even on older hardware. With graphic tweaks, I can get 60 FPS on Metro Exodus MOST of the time, and 50 FPS on RDR2 (with A LOT of tweaks)... Both look awesome in terms of graphics... And I own a freakin' GTX 970 which I bought in 2015!

In cyberpunk, I can get 30 FPS on not populated areas (AGAIN, 1080p, with EVERYTHING on LOW settings). In the city, it falls to under 20-15. I had to drop the resolution to fuckin' 720p (yep, ps3/xbox 360 gen standard) to get some decent frame-rates, and even so, it's not constant. That sounds like an optimized game to you? If it was, PS4 hardware should EASILY be able to handle this game on 1080p, 60 FPS (or 4K, 30 FPS... like EVERY OTHER DAMN TRIPLE-A PS4 title is able to). But CDPR decided to go full elitist on this. Shame on them...

@rotchild: 4k TV's are not for the privileged at all, they're affordable for anyone now. If you go to purchase a new TV you are looking at 4k displays as a minimum now and they can be cheaper than a new console or PC, even at 50".

@gotrekfabian: I have a 55 inch 4K TV. And yes, they are very affordable... But who said anything about TV's? I was talking about hardware that is able to push 60 FPS on a 4K display. Big news: the Ps4 can't, no matter what the specs say... it can push 30 FPS, on triple A titles (Spider-Man = locked on 30 FPS. God of War = Performance mode = 1080p/60 FPS, which means either that or 4K/30 FPS... Last of US Remastered, the same as GOW.And guess what: Cyberpunk can't even push 60 FPS at 1080p!! That's some poor optimization there, don't you think?

A 3080 RTX cost 700 dollars. It's relatively not-expensive if compared to a 2080, which underperforms (when compared to the 3080) and goes about for 1200 dollars. Have you tried finding a 3080 to purchase? Good luck with that.

You totally missed my point, but that's fine.

@rotchild: Okay, my bad. I read it as display rather than hardware due to scan reading while watching something else at the same time. I agree that PS4 Pro is definitely not 4k 60fps capable as I own one (PS5 now though) so that's not really news to me.

I'm not in the market for graphics cards right now but I know the situation which was bad well before the RTX 3k series launched. Plenty of streamers I know/follow are still trying to get their hands on one but have little hope of securing one any time soon.

@gotrekfabian: No problem mate ;)

Yeah, the shortage of GPU's available can also be blamed on BitCoin miners, who simply wipe 'em all out on release date, no matter which precautionary means stores/manufacturers (in this case, nVidia) take to prevent this. It sucks :(

"A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad" -Shigeru Miyamoto

The big change since Miyamoto said those words in 1996 is, of course, the fact that devs can now patch games post-release, meaning a rushed game can be "eventually good." What sticks around "forever" these days and can't be so easily turned around is the damage done to a dev's reputation when a much-hyped game is released in a half-baked state on a format that over 100 million people own.

Lucky enough to have a PC that can run it (modders are already making performance fixes) but i feel for console pea... i mean players, this is a completely unacceptable console release and the execs should be ashamed for rushing it just for the quick holiday cash. Hope this 8 year dev/Hype cycle was worth the PR hit.

Well at least they are offering a no hassle(minus boxed) refunds and not pulling a Bethesda...yet anyways.

this is such a disaster, and the perfect example of why the better late than never saying goes. This one of the most hyped games ever and if only they didnt announce release dates to begin with they wouldnt have had this mess, and maybe would have even broken sales records. I will most likely buy it once the next gen versions come out, but for others i dont think it will ever be appealing again.

LMAO I read that as "so we're fucking off on holiday now to spend our Xmas bonus which we decided is not going to be based on review scores - thank God!"

You can upgrade your system, wait for a patch or get a refund. We frankly don't care anymore as we're shagged out from the work we've already put into getting this game to run on 9 different platforms* during COVID. Seasons greetings!

@esqueejy: I think you've read the first sentence and ignored the rest. I, as spotted by others, was being sarcastic. But there's an element of truth in there as they've been working on a game over an entire console generation and it does raise the question on what they've been developing/optimising it on/for exactly over the past 8 years if not for the Xbox One and PS4? Their focus it seems has mainly been on the PC which is an interesting decision considering they sold more Witcher 3 copies between Xbox and PS4 (15M) than on the PC (12M). I smell a backhander from Nvidia and Google Stadia (sarcasm or truth...you decide!) but hey! - you're OK as you have a PC!

(Sales source: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/witcher-3s-sales-by-system-how-the-game-has-sold-o/1100-6475832/)

Edit - I’ve edited my original post as it was a bit mean considering it’s Xmas next week. Seasons Greetings brother but perhaps don’t LOL and patronise people for expressing a valid opinion.

@esqueejy: In Witcher 3, they mostly patched gameplay bugs: which are normal on games of this spectrum (on release) and they will surely patch it with Cyberpunk. But with Witcher, they didn't patch anything related to performance, 'cause they didn't need to: Witcher 3 was a very stable game in regards to performance / stability at launch (INFINETLY more than Cyberpunk)... Sure, Witcher 3 was not released in a "gen-transition" like Cyberpunk did (and it doesn't have lots of populated areas with tall buildings, except for pretty much Novigrad...) But that shouldn't be an excuse. Especially after crunching their employees and delaying the game twice... Can you imagine the woes if the game was released in May?

@rotchild: Really? LOL! No. While Witcher 3 admittedly had less problems than CP seems to be having, mainly on consoles, they patched a whole bunch of performance issues in Witcher 3...everything from graphical to UI to keyboard responsiveness etc. You really need to chill out and not resort to just making things up out of nothing.

@esqueejy: I'm totally chill. You're the one that seems triggered / offended by comments directed at the developer... (you couldn't even seem to grasp the original posters' sarcasm).

Witcher 3 at some point got a creation kit. So in PC, there were plenty of mods that addressed lot of elements regarding the games' "mishaps". Let's hope CDPR can do the same for CP , although it seems very unlikely, as it isn't (and shouldn't be) their priority at all right now.

@rotchild: The creation kit for Witcher 3 is an unresponsive dodge and irrelevant. You were totally wrong about CDPR's patching of Witcher 3 and I simply pointed it out. They did need to correct performance issues and they did correct them. You were incorrectly attempting to make the juxtaposition of the two games look more stark to feed the "it's crap" whining. That's all. Has nothing to do with your silly use of the words "triggered" as your go-to way of attacking anyone who corrects your disinformation or disagrees with you.

@tisezoda: While I completely agree with this point of view, it's also valid to see the side of the VAST majority of the consumers, who at covid times, can't simply afford a next-gen console, or a 2000/3000 series nVidia video card (even if they were available, which they are not).

If CDPR couldn't optimize the game to run decently on current gen (again, VAST majority of people), they should've kicked back the game another 6 months, at least. (Or they shouldn't have released that system requirements spread sheet, which is a blatant lie).

But then again, yes, there are several people (the higher ups you mentioned) that invested in this game that want to see their return now, rather than later. Money talks, unfortunately.

They surely saw this coming, no? Even though it had been delayed multiple times, launching a game for the sake of launching it partly broken doesn't really help either... Even though there's a huge install base, skipping 'current' gen sounds like a more sensible idea.

How does it run so badly on a generation of consoles it was initially designed for 8 years ago? What have they been doing for the past 8 years and 3 delays!

Runs fine on NVIDIA PC and Stadia though...I smell a backhander....;-)

Knock on wood, but I'm just running an i7 8700k with a 1080ti hybrid and at pretty high settings and I'm not really experiencing any problems. Sure, there's the occasionally clipping or draw-in, and some items appear to be stuck in the floor or stairs and won't let me pick them up etc., but no crashing or whatever. I feel for the console crowd though...the game, IMHO, has been amazing so far (though I'm not too far in), especially a certain scene in a penthouse hehe

@esqueejy: I got the same CPU with an RTX 2070, game runs amazing and I've only noticed a few minor bugs. The load times also blow my mind to how fast it is.

Where are all my cross-gen handicap deniers?!?!

This is the issue with having to cater to different sets of hardware. The game was too ambitious for the base PS4/Xbox. But instead of holding back new-gen, CD projekt red decided to cut off ties with last gen.

This is the same reason Halo looked like a 360 title on the Series X. The reason games like ratchet and clank and their use of the SSD for core game mechanics are not possible on last-gen.

Aside from the countless list of developers explaining this phenomenon, take this Cyberpunk issue as even more proof. And get excited for what next gen will look like once we release games for only the PS5 and series X

The updates will come " when they're ready"? That's what they said about the game too. After the misleading statements and such, I'm no longer a fan of the company. I'll be very hesitant about any and all of their future titles
