Cyberpunk 2077 Dev: "It Must Be F**king Great"

"It's on our shoulders to deliver."

After the huge critical and commercial success of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, developer CD Projekt Red is feeling more responsibility to deliver with Cyberpunk 2077, CEO Marcin Iwinski told us in a new interview from the Game Developers Conference.

Speaking to GameSpot's Danny O'Dwyer on The Lobby that the big success of The Witcher 3 also allows CD Projekt Red to be "even more ambitious" with the upcoming futuristic game.

"Right now, we have the success of the Witcher 3; people played it and people loved it," he explained. "So it's even more responsibility. The fact that Witcher 3 performed so well allows us to be even more ambitious with Cyberpunk 2077. Right now, it's on our shoulders to deliver here. The next time you hear about Cyberpunk 2077 we will show something and it must be f**king great.

"People really expect something great and that's what we have to stand up to and deliver."

Asked if the CD Projekt Red development team was excited to move on to Cyberpunk 2077, Iwinski said, "They definitely are." After a decade working with dragons, swords, and medieval themes, the team is feeling energized to work on a project involving guns, ammo, mutants, and implants, Iwinski explained.

During an investor meeting recently, CD Projekt Red studio head Adam Badowski said Cyberpunk 2077 will be "even better, even bigger, even more revolutionary" than what the company originally set out to do.

He went on to say the game is still "a long ways away" from launch, and further stressed that CD Projekt Red still has "a lot of work to do" to make it a "truly outstanding game."

Cyberpunk 2077 is also planned to be "much greater" in magnitude than The Witcher 3.

CD Projekt Red has been talking for a long time about the ambitious nature of Cyberpunk 2077. Speaking on a Polish TV station in 2015, studio boss Adam Kicinski said, "We need to create a game that will be even more successful" than The Witcher 3, which has shipped around 10 million copies. "We have a long way ahead of us to reach the biggest commercial successes in the world."

The Witcher 3 was a "good investment," according to CD Projekt Red management, but at the same time, the game was not a worldwide chart-topper for the full year.

"Sure, many people consider The Witcher 3 to be the best game in the world [in 2015], but this is not a game that broke any sales record," Kicinski said.

Cyberpunk 2077, announced back in 2012, puts players into a "dark future" in 2077 where advanced technologies have become "both the salvation and the curse of humanity." The game promises a nonlinear story designed for "mature" players and is set in the metropolis of Night City. It has also been revealed that Cyberpunk 2077 will feature sandbox elements, though this has not been specified.

The game is due to arrive sometime in the 2017-2021 window. Platforms have not been announced, but Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC would appear to be likely candidates.

Uh Ohhh... game has an attractive looking female. Spidey sense tells me that a bunch of feminist hate rage is coming to anyone who remotely thinks this game is interesting.

I just want, more than anything here, for there to be a revitalization of the cyber-punk genre in it's pure-breed glory. The closet we have is Deus Ex, but with it's extreme focus on augmentation it just doesn't quite hit the same itch.

I think they would have been better off having not announced this project four freaking years ago. They started to talk about it before they were even ready to think about starting to talk about it.

While I'm still interested, thinking I might have to potentially wait another fours years for the product runs me into the ground.

I'm not a gamer, and I don't have a Windows box - but the original announcement for this game has spurred me to change that. If this game looks half as good as the various videos we've already seen released, then I am already sold. Take my money!

Beyond that, I seriously hope that when this is released, that there is a single player option, in addition to multiplayer, and I hope that it allows for first person use. Icing on the cake would be having VR HMD support, along with a decent API to allow the ability to have complete control over the player's avatar, so that users with non-consumer 3D tracking systems can fully jack into an immersive experience.

Seriously - I would love to see and have that last part. I own a quad-sensor Ascension Flock along with a 5DT dataglove (the wonders of Ebay) - nothing would be better than to hook this up along with my Rift DK2 and be fully immersed in the game.

Of course - such a setup is going to require a massive video card, but if I got all of the above, a dual 980 system would be awfully tempting...

If there's one thing I like more and more about CDPROJEKT is their determination to make veteran development companies like Bethesda obsolete. Their passion and ambition is virile and non-complacent, which is essential for sustainability in the future. After the success of TW3, they actually act disappointed in themselves, which is awesome to see. Bethesda on the other hand gave us the worst, most dumbed down Fallout ever, added with a superiority attitude and no responses addressing these complaints.

Watch out AAA devs, this company is coming to drink your milkshake. I'm really hoping that 2077 will be incredible. I think it will. And it might completely take over Fallout in terms of delivering a true hardcore RPG with actual depth and decision making, not just killing everything that moves with reused songs from the prior installment.

@nikolistary: I think "obsolete" is abit of a stretch. Story driven narrative open world games has never been Bethesdas bread and butter but more of a exploration and discovery experience with a heavy emphasis on role playing. Yes, Fallout 4 was the their attempt at it using the whole voice over "Mass Effect" dialog tree which pissed allot of their fans off. But I agree with you that Bethesda has been knocked down a notch by CDPROJECT and I'm sure the whole gaming industry is taking notice from The Witcher 3 on what it takes to be the best. It's a good time to be a RPG fan and hard competition between great devs only makes for a better product.

@nikolistary: I absolutely love CD Projekt Red because of their passion for a great story and experience. I knew they were the new kings of RPGS after I played the Witcher 2 on the 360 in April of 2012; I became a Hugh fan and ultimately wanted them to stay independent and creative. Now look at there success! Congrats CD Projekt Red! Furthermore, I was disappointed the way Fallout 4 turned out 1) voiced protagonist I like your character to be silent just make the npc better on voice acting. 2) no repair system? It's a post apocalyptic wasteland you should have to manage your weapons? 3) it didn't feel like the Fallout I habe have been waiting for I don't know why it just didn't.

No mention that this is clearly based on the tabletop RPG Cyberpunk from the 80s? The name of the locale is identical, as are the tropes.

Being ambitious is one thing, but please, finish your game properly before releasing it. Witcher 3 was a broken mess.

@nurnberg: I played it for 2 weeks straight after release, and even preloaded the game, i've had 0 game breaking bugs or broken stuff in all the 90 hours+ i've played. And im only on a GTX 960. I dont know where you got broken from, but that was Batman Arkham Knight.

@stereoflava: GTA V almost had no bug in it when released (the single player portion). There are no excuse to release a game as broken as Witcher 3. Sure, a few bugs are acceptable, but the amount seen in Witcher 3 was ridiculous.

@nurnberg: Wow....you really got me there. I did see some glitches, but your over exaggeration a "broken mess" is unfounded. The game played great and I never saw a game breaking glitch in the 216 hours I put into this game. I cant say that about many other RPGs. Fanboy.....nope, just not a salty little whiner.

@ef56sd: You are so obviously lying it's not funny... I also played 200 hours of Witcher 3... I was forced to reload my game because of bugs at least 30 times. What is the point of lying? Even CD Projekt Red admits those bugs existed. They fixed a lot of them and you can see it in the patch descriptions. So there is no point in pretending they didn't exist.

@nurnberg: lol, they have provided awesome support for this game. Name one developer this generation of consoles that delivered a 300+ hour game, with 20+ hour DLC's at an affordable price, on top of 17 free DLC's. They have been very vigilant with patching and fixing bugs for this game. You just come off as ungrateful.

@rodro: The Witcher had a set character so it made sense there, but you should be good to create your own in this game, though I'd imagine if you can talk, it'd be only a few possible voice choices.

And since it won't be based on a novel, maybe I'll actually be able to care about the characters in this game.
