Cyberpunk 2077 Dev Reminds Fans That 100% Of Sales Go To The Studio If You Buy On GOG

You can buy Cyberpunk 2077 at a multitude of stores, but only one pays the developer 100% of sales.

It is a big week for gaming, as CD Projekt Red's long-awaited Cyberpunk 2077 finally releases on December 10 after many years of development and multiple delays, and you can now read our Cyberpunk 2077 review.

You can buy the game at a variety of stores, so you might be wondering where to get it. If you're after the PC edition, CD Projekt Red reminded fans that the developer gets 100% of the sales money if you buy from the company's own digital store, GOG.

On other platforms, such as PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam, CD Projekt Red takes about 70% of sales due to the platform fees associated with each platform.

This is just a rough estimate based on historical data; it's possible CDPR has a different arrangement, but the 70/30 revenue share model is commonplace across gaming.

Another bonus of buying from GOG is that, everyone who pre-orders by December 10, will receive a code to receive 30% off on official CDPR gear from their merchandise store. However, this discount code only works on orders place in the EU, USA, and Canada.

Cyberpunk 2077 releases on December 10 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, as well as PS4 and Xbox One. The game's DLC will be announced after release.

Additionally, a standalone Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer game is coming later, along with a next-generation edition of the single-player game.

Also, the game is DRM-Free on GOG, because it's GOG.

Does that mean the video game is 30% cheaper on GOG?

@systemoverload: No one else would carry Cyberpunk if CDRP was undercutting them on GoG. That's why digital distribution didn't lower AAA game prices; brick and mortal retailers wont sell your game if they know you're pricing it lower somewhere else.

@tsunami2311: It's true, and we see a wide range of digital only game prices. But I can't imagine Sony or Microsoft would be super thrilled with CDPR selling the PC version of this year's highest profile game for less than it costs on their respective platforms.

Does that mean that because of ALL THE MONEY they're going to make on this game, they'll remove microtransactions from the MP version of the game?

No, of course not. Even though they said they would not include them in the first place.

@Hondje89: Didn't they say the multiplayer game is free and a stand alone thing? I don't think it's part of Cyberpunk 2077, and I don't think you need to own the single player game to get the multiplayer one.

I got a GOG code via Play-Asia for $42, so I guess that means they still took a decent enough cut.

More like the company gets 100%.

The developers’s salaries probably ended when the game went gold.

@Willy105: Maybe yes, maybe not. They probably put their core team in this game and likely they'll still be around for bug-fixing, after-launch support, and whatever is the next game they make.

Can't talk about the contractor work or project-based contracts that they may have in place.

I imagine more than a couple of these guys moving on to The Witcher 4 or whatever CDP does next.

@Warlord_Irochi: Sure, which in a live game is usually about a dozen people. This game is a single player one, so it will probably be less.

Thats hundreds and hundreds of people that may not be getting anything different whether the game is bought on GoG or anywhere else.

@Willy105: A dozen people on a live game, WHAT? My dude you could not be further from the truth.

Live games have the team size of a regular release title for the entirety of its run. Super succesfull live games like DBD, Fortnite, Apex, CSGO ect have employees in the range of 300 - 1000 people working fulltime on the product. Even less successful ones have teams in the hundreds. A dozen people cannot run a live game, believe me. Not even 2 dozens.

These games have ridiculous release scheduels. The only two options is either to start work on future release significantly before they release, so multiple small 50 or so man teams working on each update, or you just brute force it update to update by throwing as much man-power as you humanly can. In both scenarios, you need alot of people. 3-4 months to release an update is a R-I-D-I-C-U-L-O-U-S-L-Y Short timeframe.

@schindigg: I am a bit like that.. especially for two games - shenmue 3 and now Hitman 3. Epic store exclusive for a year, and I have all of the hitman games on steam, and hitman 1 and 2 blend into the one game! So I am waiting for the complete edition of hitman 3, to complete the steam collection. Shenmue 3 was total rubbish on the epic store, took far to long to update and download when I wanted to play it that night.

That being said, you can manually ad NON steam games to steam, then add the artwork to it and then add it to your collection in there so you can get this on GOG and then add it to steam this way

@comicsausage: Eh, I don't really care about the whole Epic Store exclusivity thing as I only buy DRM-Free anyway, so I'm used to waiting.

So do we get it at a lower price at GOG then? I'm guessing no because then other retailers would not bother carrying it if it were priced lower there.

If you want people to buy it on GOG you gotta have an incentive that directly benefits the consumer.

@UserX03: You can download the game installers directly from their website and not have to run any kind of Steam-like client in the background to play it.

@UserX03: The bonuses and goodies you get with buying games through GOG is WAYYYYY more than you get for pre-purchasing through Steam or any other vendor. Same goes for Cyberpunk. Pre-purchased 2 days ago, downloading now and will have access to all the goodies asap. Oh, and the game will be DRM free on GOG.

If I could buy Xbox versions from GOG.com, I absolutely would.

Anything I buy on PC comes from there first, but I don't see myself buying many new PC games anymore for several years.

@skyhighgam3r:

My buying patterns are similar. I tend to prefer console, so I buy Xbox when a game is available there, if not, I buy on the Switch, and if it's only available for Playstation and PC I buy PC, prioritizing GOG if they have it, and then going to Steam, and in theory Epic as the third option although I have yet to purchase any games there.

GOG is definitely the best PC buying option with their DRM free model.

@izraal: The DRM thing is, to an extent, one of the reasons I prefer Epic over Steam. I was pretty excited Control ran without needing the epic store even running.

I was unaware that Epic followed the GOG model of not forcing DRM onto games. I'll have to be sure to consider them over Steam when possible. Thanks for the heads up.

The game will actually get a higher share on Steam, because it's selling so many copies over there.

"...For every sale after $50 million, Steam will only take 20 percent from the game’s overall earnings."
