Cyberpunk 2077 Has Been Delayed--Here's The New Release Date

Perhaps it's a blessing with how jam-packed the first quarter was looking.

CD Projekt Red has announced a delay for Cyberpunk 2077, pushing the anticipated RPG back from its original April 16 release date to September 17. The game--which is available for pre-order--is still scheduled to release for Xbox One, PS4, PC, and Google Stadia, but you'll have to wait a bit longer to delve into its cyberpunk future.

"We are currently at a state where the game is complete and playable, but there's still work to be done," CD Projekt Red wrote in a press release, embedded below. "Night City is massive--full of stories, content, and places to visit, but due to the sheer scale and complexity of it all, we need more time to finish playtesting, fixing, and polishing. We want Cyberpunk 2077 to be our crowning achievement for this generation and postponing launch will give the precious months we need to make the game perfect."

Now Playing: Cyberpunk 2077 Just Got Delayed - GS News Update

CD Projekt Red added that there will be "regular updates" on the game's progress going forward. They also confirmed that the Cyberpunk 2077 team will work longer hours despite the additional time--this period, known in the industry as "crunch," remains one of the core issues in the ongoing discussion about game industry unionization. Despite the delay pushing the release date closer to the launch of both the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, CD Projekt Red currently has no plans to make next-gen console versions of Cyberpunk 2077.

Night City is the setting for Cyberpunk 2077, and CD Projekt Red said it wants to create the design of the city so that it offers a "unique take" on cyberpunk. "When we showed the demo last year, people were surprised at first that it was so sunny," Cyberpunk 2077 concept art coordinator Marthe Jonkers said in an interview with GamesIndustry.Biz. "They expected rainy, dark cyberpunk but you can make a cyberpunk city in California. Of course, it will rain there, because we have a weather system, and it will also be night, but we are really trying to get this fresh take on cyberpunk."

The city itself is built with its own history, which takes place over four distinct eras. During entropism, there was intense poverty. Kitsch saw an increase in the low- and middle-class creating and buying colorful and extravagant items. During neomilitarism, the rich invaded Night City and built towering skyscrapers. Finally, neokitsch saw the rich beginning to adopt the more colorful style of the poor when designing buildings. All these styles twist in on each other, creating a city where you can immediately identify when something was built or which time period someone probably comes from.

Honestly I'm glad with all these delays, March and April were WAY too packed. Now I can focus on Ori 2, Doom, and RE3. Maybe Animal Crossing

@xenomorphalien: Comments like this are always funny. Like you have to get every game that comes out, right when they come out. 1,000 amazing games could come out in a single month and my response would be, “I’ll get to them when I get to them.”

@justthetip: I mean, Ori 2 is on Game pass so I'll be playing it day 1, and I'll for sure be getting Doom the day it comes out after how good the first was. Same with RE3. Like it's 2 games lol. What's the problem?

Please do elaborate on the jams that is supposedly packing in Q1, which is apparently where we are at the moment in the year that is 2020.

It's fine all my hype is currently absorbed by Doom Eternal and FF7. I can stew on Cyberpunk for a while.

@Sindroid: I think April's technically Q2, but DOOM is still coming out Q1, and that's looking more than decent.

CDPR at first: Releases? When it's ready.
Also CDPR: April guys, it's coming in April. That's when it'll be ready.
Also, also CDPR: Our bad, it won't be ready for 5 months after.

I know a lot of folks see this as "good" as the game would be more polished, and sure, it will be. But as the game I've been most looking forward to for the last few years, the delay just brings up the question "why start marketing if you aren't even close."

It's not as bad as the announce for ES6, but still really irksome.

@Chizaqui: I assume they thought they were closer than they were and could make the April release. Plus, AAA games tend to start the hype early to build pre-orders.

@mogan: Of course, but it seems incredibly strange to me, at least. CDPR is very keen on the company's perception by fans, and uses that as a catalyst when making any decision. It would be ill-advised to compare anything CDPR does to industry norms.

I would be less surprised if it was pushed back so far to serve as a centerpiece at this year's E3, to cover for the lack of Sony.

@Chizaqui: Underrating the work that remains. Happens a lot in any kind of project management especially when they operate around cyclical marketing events like E3 and whatnot.

Lmao, Q1 is not "Jam-packed". I'll be free to work on the backlog until FF7, then have a long break till 2077 is out. I'm actually kind of alright with a light year in games after the past few years though.

GOOD!!!! Excellent. More work put in the better. This game has HUGE hype around it and it can't afford to come out TRASH like WWE 2K20 did. I pre-ordered it at the end of last year. Worth the wait!

Smart move sales wise, considering ff7 remake got delayed to April + re3 remake is out same month so that's 2 big hitters, and a normal person doesn't buy every game on launch with full price(especially not when there are so many coming around the same time span) so they made a very smart move. Personally re3 is my priority first, then ff7. I'd buy cyberpunk on a sale later on but now it will be no problems buying it on launch, don't think it has anything to compete with yet in September.

@ember_to_flame: Both FF7 Remake & RE3 Remake are Remakes. We all know the story, characters & endings of both those games; so they're nowhere nearly as desirable or exciting as a new blockbuster game, and a revolutionary one at that. C-2077 got delayed for technical reasons; not for commercial reasons.

@PurpleWarden: ...I actually dont play RE for ''ze storeh and zeh characturz'' but for the actual gameplay and immersion of playing a true survival horror games. Same with DOOM. You know, since youre actually PLAYING a video GAME and not watching a movie or reading a book.

@bluzima:

There is not enough of an incentive to pre-order video games that far in an advanced.

Video games prices generally go down and September is not that far from Black Friday.

Buying the season pass early isn’t that great either.

@systemoverload: CDPR already said in August last year that they’re happy with preorders and expect phenomenal sales. I agree that it’s silly to preorder so early but the numbers are there, this games already a hit.

@bluzima: "We are currently at a state where the game is complete and playable" well, small bugs would be a months delay, it is delayed til September. And the news comes like 1-2 days after ff7 being delayed.

@bluzima: Not scared, but they know the fan base is big on both. Both will sell and considering this is a new game, some people rather wait and see what the game is like before they buy it. While these remakes people already know what they are which makes it easier to buy without followup if you are into it.

This is the new norm. Every game gets delayed. Why the hell do they even announce release dates then. Im sure developers even PLAN on delays when they announce a release date at this point.

@bluzima: Because release dates still give them a target goal to work around. Perhaps they should have internal unreleased target release dates to work around.

I remember back in 05 Doom 3 and Half Life 2 didn't have announced release dates until they went gold. Not sure why super hyped games don't follow suit today?

I am perfectly fine with the delay, as long as final product is exactly as the devs wanted it to be, (and the gamers too).

I am happy, when some studios take their time and don't rush to roll out the games in a half-baked state (issuing launch day patches/fixes/ measured in Gigabytes) just to please the financial execs, which tends to become a standard practice lately .

Any delay is a good delay. Whether it be because the game's not ready, or if it's because another game's release might cut into their profits, a delay is a good one.

Understandable. Nobody in their right mind would dare to take on Final Fantasy VII Remake AND The Last of Us II, especially considering how good and polished those two giants look from what was shown so far. They'd lose a big portion of full price sales with the PS4 audience, which would definitely be a considerable financial hit. Not to mention RE3 Remake also comes out in April now.

They did the right thing moving out of the way.

@owizeisme1: Lol, triggered.

Rational thinking doesn't seem to be your strong suit. You're delusional if you think those games wouldn't take a huge chunk of Cyberpunk's full price sales away on PS4, especially if they'd be getting high scores from outlets and even more so, if Cyberpunk would be as broken and visually downgraded at launch as The Witcher 3 was.

@owizeisme1:I think Last of us 2 is already by itself a better product or at least somethjing that has generated so much hype that it will sell better than cyberpunk. That doesnt mean cyberpunk won`t be an excellent game or sell badly. RE3 Remake is a great twist to something we already know. I bought RE2 on launch and had better time with that than several new games such as: Anthem, Ghost recon Breakpoint and some others). I don`t think berserk is a funny Little man but a logical one. You, however got triggered easily by a non offensive comment he made.

Guess we will call you "triggered but why Little man" from now on.
