Cyberpunk 2077 News Coming At Gamescom This Week

Here we go (again).

New details on The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red's ambitious RPG Cyberpunk 2077 will be shared during Gamescom on Tuesday, August 21, the studio has announced.

This will be the first big update on the game since it was finally shown off in more detail at E3 2018 back in June. Gamescom is one of the biggest gaming shows on the planet, so it's no surprise that Cyberpunk 2077 will have a presence there.

Now Playing: We Saw An Hour Of Cyberpunk 2077 | E3 2018

It's not clear what time exactly the new information will be released, but keep checking back with GameSpot for the latest. As of yet, we don't know the news will be.

At E3, CD Projekt Red showed a CG trailer for Cyberpunk 2077 during Microsoft's briefing. The company then showed off gameplay behind closed doors; GameSpot was impressed by it.

Cyberpunk 2077 is in development for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, but it doesn't have a release date yet. For more, check out all of GameSpot's previous coverage here.

Before we get all First vs. Third...

What most of us loved so much about the witcher games wasn't exactly the gameplay (though I didn't have as much of a problem with it as others). It was the world CDPR created, the characters they gave us, the stories they told. You kept coming back because Geralt was so cool, because Triss was so (cough) interesting, because you wanted to see what happened with the Baron and the Crones and the crown of Skellege. Right down to the godlings and original monsters to the random little NPCs, the world was a world we wanted to come back to, again and again.

I have utter faith that they can do that again with Cyberpunk. And, if they do, then they will deliver what we love about their games, whether we're looking though a character's eyes or over their shoulder.

@olddadgamer: I came back to The Witcher 3 to make Temeria great again. To get those goddamn Redanians out.

I've slightly come around to the idea of a FPP RPG, but if they've listened to the feedback and have some manner of TPP-mode to show off - that would be awesome.

It's kind of funny to me how often you see people saying "why did people expect it to be like The Witcher?" and then in the same breath compare it to Deus Ex. Doesn't make sense. Why should it be similar to Deus Ex instead? I mean, if Deus Ex is what it's being compared to, why shouldn't it be different from Deus Ex, just like it "should" be different from The Witcher? It's almost as if people immediately started thinking "if it's fantasy it can be TPP, anything else gets FPP and if you don't have absolute faith in a company for some reason, I will REEEEEEE".

@KaptenHaddock:

“Listened to the feedback”

Of who? Half a dozen whingers?

There will be no Third Person from the devs.

And your comparison argument makes literally no sense.

“People saying why did you expect The Witcher?”

Well duh, obviously the dystopian futuristic, cyber noir, based on a DnD esque pen and paper game, might be a little different to the medieval themed dark fantasy based on a series of Polish novels.

As for the Deus Ex comparison. What are you on about?

People are saying you shouldn’t expect The Witcher.

No one is saying you SHOULD expect Deus Ex. The comparison and likeness is just an easy one to draw.

@mistervulpes:

Well, "half a dozen whingers" is quite a misrepresentation. Feedback is feedback. You wouldn't say that people with the gene that makes cilantro taste like soap are simply whiney children. If you're giving them food with cilantro, it will not be enjoyable to them.

Now, it is not *my* comparison argument, it is one that others have made. I tried to follow through with the logic, but I suppose I may not have been clear enough in explaining my point.

When people reacted negatively to the FPP announcement, other fans responded with "CDPR doesn't need to make a futuristic Witcher-game". And then that community of fans also drew paralells to Deus Ex, since there are similarities in presentation - both being at least cyberpunk-ish FPP games with conversation systems that are TPP.

I didn't mean anything about gameplay mechanics, I was trying to talk specifically about player perspective. Gameplay in FPP and TPP are of course very different, but it was not my point.

Yes, these fans are saying that you shouldn't expect The Witcher. They are however clearly saying that you should expect something similar to Deus Ex.

What I'm trying to convey here is a bit too complex and tedious for me to type out in exact and clear reasoning, and that's probably not *that* interesting to you anyway - but I do hope you understand what I mean a bit better. Sorry that I responded with half an essay.

@KaptenHaddock: I'm not a developer, but I imagine that, feedback aside, instituting a full on third person mode isn't just something you can do a in a couple of months, or at all if you're this deep into development. I think that would be a major technical challenge, but I could be wrong.

Well, I hear very different things about how far along they actually are. But yeah, I wouldn't expect full TPP support at this point. Some manner of it, was what I was hoping for. If that is like a feature where you can inspect your character in the world on the fly, maybe being able to walk at most. Would be a cool vanity feature, if anything.

@KaptenHaddock: Personally, although I like 3rd person, I care more about empowering a talented designer to bring their vision to life. That said, I welcome others expressing their differing opinions on it. These kinds of discussions help me learn and grow re: game design, though I will likely always be an armchair entusiast.

You bring up a nice point about one of the strengths of 3rd person: Being able to see your character in an RPG is a way for the player to feel more connected to that character they are role playing. I have read that CDPR have worked in various ways that you will see your character, like when getting augmentations and such. So I think some of your wants will be answered in that department. Also, there are a lot of other ways to help the player feel more connected to character, and I hope CDPR can employ them. Certainly the writing itself is one of the most powerful tools to do this. Also, being given meaningful choices to make. CDPR have shown themselves to be masters of both. In] the end, part of what will help determine how deeply I love this RPG will likely be how connected I feel to the character, and third person is just one tool they have to help that happen.

Thanks for your thoughts, I enjoyed reading them.

I think it’s funny that everyone expected this to be a futuristic version of The Witcher instead of first person, like Deus Ex. Companies don’t have to make just one style of game.

@justthetip: Agree and Deus Ex is a great example.

Although I can understand some people expecting something similar to Witcher 3, as it was so successful and 3rd person is common in RPGs, it blew my mind that so many seemed adamantly against it at first. I’m sure that will change if CD Projekt delivers on their vision, which looks likely. I love 3rd person for RPGs too but I also welcome new ideas and expereinces, especially from Devs as talented, honest and hard working as these folks.

@cappy: Yep. Right there with you. 3rd person could’ve been cool, but I’m also a huge Deus Ex fan. So I’m happy with this either way. I trust CD Projekt.
