Cyberpunk 2077 Review Roundup

Cyberpunk 2077 will finally drop on December 10. Does it live up to its hype? See what critics think in our review roundup.

Cyberpunk 2077 generated a lot of buzz over the past few years. From its ever-expanding file size to Keanu Reeves' involvement, the sci-fi open-world RPG sparked conversations even before anybody got their hands on it, thanks in large part to its pedigree. This is the new game from CD Projekt Red, the studio behind the acclaimed The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, often heralded as one of the best games of the last decade.

So does the actual content live up to its pre-release hype? Critics offered varying flavors of: It depends on what gameplay element you're looking at. Most applauded the game's beautiful technical construction and generally engaging RPG elements, but also noted the pre-release build's many bugs. Some critics also thought Cyberpunk 2077 was very tame, as opposed to its marketed edginess. For a game with "cyberpunk" in its title, a couple reviewers thought it wasn't revolutionary nor groundbreaking, and instead felt like a knit of past cultural and gaming references.

Now Playing: Cyberpunk 2077 Review

Cyberpunk 2077 is a pretty big game with a lot of side content, with some critics noting they weren't able to fully explore everything. Completion of Cyberpunk 2077's main storyline is estimated to be around 30 hours, and if you want to explore everything the game has to offer, it will be a much longer playtime. One other thing you should be aware of is a warning regarding epilepsy.

  • Game: Cyberpunk 2077
  • Platforms: PC, Xbox Series X and Series S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Google Stadia
  • Developer: CD Projekt RED
  • Release Date: December 10
  • Price: $60 / £60

Other than the below review excerpts, you can check out GameSpot's sister site Metacritic for more reviews on the game. It releases this Thursday, December 10, and you can start preloading Cyberpunk 2077 now.

GameSpot - 7/10

"[I]t's hard to get into Cyberpunk 2077's world in general. So much of it is superficial set dressing, and there's so much happening all around you--ads going off at all times, gunfights breaking out in the streets, texts coming in about cars you'll never buy--that a lot of the game feels superfluous. The side quests and the characters they showcase are the shining beacon through the neon-soaked bleakness of Night City, and they give you room to explore the best the core RPG mechanics have to offer. These are what carried me through an otherwise disappointing experience." -- Kallie Plagge [Full Review]

IGN - 9/10

"Cyberpunk 2077 kicks you into its beautiful and dazzlingly dense cityscape with few restrictions. It offers a staggering amount of choice in how to build your character, approach quests, and confront enemies, and your decisions can have a tangible and natural-feeling impact on both the world around you and the stories of the people who inhabit it. Those stories can be emotional, funny, dark, exciting, and sometimes all of those things at once. The main quest may be shorter than expected when taken on its own and it’s not always clear what you need to do to make meaningful changes to its finale, but the multitude of side quests available almost from the start can have a surprisingly powerful effect on the options you have when you get there. It’s a shame that frustratingly frequent bugs can occasionally kill an otherwise well-set mood, but Cyberpunk 2077’s impressively flexible design makes it a truly remarkable RPG." -- Tom Marks [Full Review]

PC Gamer - 78/100

"It's the kind of game I'd upgrade for though, because Cyberpunk is a technical stunner and seeing your friends in high definition is worth the ask. Sure, The Witcher 3 was funnier, more clever and subversive, with better dialogue on the whole, but I’m taken by how relentlessly hopeful Cyberpunk is. Its exploration of a technocapitalist future relies heavily on genre tropes, with everyone from punks to dirty cops playing the part established way back in William Gibson's Neuromancer. But Cyberpunk 2077 remains a loving, faithful treatment of the genre, and one that constantly urged me to look for the silver lining in every shit-soaked gutter...I found it moving and life-affirming in the final moments, even in the face of near certain death and a relentless onslaught of bugs. I suppose it's an appropriate thematic throughline though: Cyberpunk 2077 is a game about V coming apart at the seams, in a city coming apart at the seams, in a game coming apart at the seams. Play it in a few months." -- James Davenport [Full Review]

Polygon - Unscored

"Like the city in which it is set, Cyberpunk 2077 may give off one impression when regarded from afar, one carefully constructed through years of marketing hype, but once players experience it up close, they’ll find that the truth is something else. On one hand, it’s a more earnest and sincere game than all its edgy marketing has suggested. On the other, though the word cyberpunk evokes a radical vision of the future, there’s nothing revolutionary on offer here. Instead, it’s a game obsessed with the past." -- Carolyn Petit [Full Review]

The Verge - Unscored

"In the way that Dungeons & Dragons codified Tolkienesque fantasy, Cyberpunk 2077 distills the most recognizable elements from influential fiction like Blade Runner and Neuromancer. The loosely defined cyberpunk genre began as a grounded alternative to space operas and post-apocalyptic wastelands, heavily influenced by hardboiled fiction. In the decades since, it’s so thoroughly permeated science fiction that its innovations have become cliches. Today, “cyberpunk” has two contradictory meanings: tech-heavy futuristic media that feels organically grown from present-day social conditions, and a specific set of 1980s and ‘90s-influenced retro-future noir conventions. Cyberpunk 2077 is a version of the latter." -- Adi Robertson [Full Review]

VentureBeat - Unscored

"What Cyberpunk really is, however, is a big open-world action role-playing game. What it’s not is a look at gaming’s future. Instead, it feels like a summation of where we’ve come in gaming since the Xbox 360 generation. It feels like a game built by people looking around to see what works — like Grand Theft Auto’s open world, Watch Dogs’ hacking, Assassin’s Creed’s quest-filled maps, Fallout’s combat and character progression, Mass Effect’s dialogue system, Batman: Arkham Knight’s crime scene investigations, and every games’ skill trees. At the same time, Cyberpunk doesn’t try much new. It feels big and expensive — and getting all of these parts to fit together seems like an impossible challenge. But because of this, Cyberpunk 2077 is a glimpse at where we are and not what is next." -- Jeff Grubb [Full Review]

Vice - Unscored

"Cyberpunk 2077 is a game of the past and its forgotten futures. Its setting is a pastiche that was overtaken by history and technology. It is a piece of software that is a throwback to PC gaming of the 1990s and early 2000s in every possible way, and its aesthetic and narrative sensibilities of a teenage boy's bedroom in the 1980s. Yet its lavish and utterly sincere devotion to its influences recalls what has made these dated visions so alluring and enduring. Cyberpunk is too tacky and graceless to be cool, but it's very big, and very loud, and sometimes that's all it takes to be awesome." -- Rob Zacny [Full Review]

Washington Post - Unscored

"Imagine the dense activities and detail of Kamurocho in the “Yakuza” games and other smaller role-playing titles, stretched out across miles of a proper “Grand Theft Auto” city, and you’re starting to grasp the ambition of the most anticipated game of the year...That game delivered what felt like a once-in-a-lifetime fantasy role-playing experience, with the kind of writing and interactivity we’d been hoping for in the genre. And yet, despite that praise, it will be hard for me to say anything definitive in this review — at least for now. In the time I’ve had with the game so far, I know I’ve missed out on a lot of the core experience...What makes matters worse is that this game is boiling over with glitches, particularly toward the game’s climax. As the game neared its end, every main character of the game was touched by some hilarious, scene-breaking glitch — including the very final shot of the story before the credits rolled. Whether this world holds together is a question I just can’t answer yet. My early impressions come with many caveats." -- Gene Park [Full Review]

I bet the game is amazing. I think the hype machine made some people expect more than what the game is.

Can. Not. Wait. Until. Tomorrow.

Not to play the game, but to hear the sycophants defend the fact that the game is nearly unplayable on PS4 and Xbox One...The platform the vast majority of players will be playing on at release. Not to mention that only the minority of REALLY high-end PC owners will be able to get it running better than 1080p/Medium.

See you guys tomorrow for some hearty forum lols.

One thing I notice is that too many reviewers like to review games, this one included, based on what their expectations of the game were instead of just looking at what the game is, accepting it for what it is and then reviewing it for what it is. It's a bit of a problem for reviewers and a major problem in the gaming community that people have their expectations out of whack and then we get treated to a sh-tstorm of disappointment when a game comes out. It frequently seems to lead to lower than justified scores for big-name AAA games for which people had built up unrealistic expectations. Reviewing 2077 negatively for not being the future of gaming and just being a sort of top notch rendition of where gaming currently is...well, that's reviewing something that doesn't exist, assuming it would be better and then applying that false standard to what does exist.

If you want to review the developers' marketing and hype or your feelings of being misled by it, do it in a separate review. It really has nothing to do with the quality (or lack thereof) of what the developer actually produced and released.

@esqueejy: Well stated, I agree completely. I have never purchased a game based on what anyone else said including friends and family. I have always determined if this is a game I want to play on my own. I don't need reviewers telling me what their expectations for the game are, I just want to hear what the game is like to play, then I can make my own decision to purchase or not.

Again, though, why does it matter what the reviewers think? Just because a few reviewers were less than impressed doesn’t make it a bad game, per se. if you want to play it, play it and make up your own mind. Maybe you’ll agree, maybe you won’t. Games are subjective.

Case in point, players and reviews for years told me how good the BioShock games are. I’ve tried several times and I just cannot enjoy any of them. They’re just not for me. And that’s fine! I had similar issues with the Borderlands series, so maybe it’s an FPS thing for me. I won’t fault anyone for liking those titles; I personally did not find them to be any fun.

The Washington Post gave a very glowing review of the game. They praised it almost the whole way through, but GS picked apart their review to only highlight the negative things they said. Not cool.

I know for me it takes a lot more time to begin to enjoy a game. The harder I try and plow through a game as fast as possible, it feels more like a chore than anything. With a game of such a large scope as this among others such as Skyrim, Fallout and other massive games, it would take atleast 50 to 60 hours to be able to be accurate with a review. Pushing through as fast as possible to see the content, but not really experience it will always end with a skewed review. I would take any review on games especially with such a large scope of activities and quests with a grain of salt. Once you start getting paid to review a game it seems to become more of a job (which it is) than anything else, where most of us gamers are playing it for the fun of it, not because we are on a timeline to get an article out about it.

44 critic reviews at the time of this comment with an average score of 91 from critics. Gamespot features five "Unscored" reviews, one 7, one eightish and one 9.

That is not an accurate representation of how the reviews are broadly coming in.

Honestly, there's nothing wrong with being an outlier. Outliers are good...they're a sign that group think is not happening. But own the outlier status! Ignore the wheenies screaming about SJW or whatever.

There's nothing inherently wrong with your particular score being a 7. Don't get into a defensive crouch with a very selective, oddly chosen review "roundup".

@BeefoTheBold: Because Gamespot wanted to make sure you saw their 7 and no other scores. In the original version of this article they didn't even have the 9.

Outlier Gamespot flubs another review, what a shocker.

I don't care if Gamespot is filtering reviews to find the ones that don't like the game (it really looks like that), but don't you think it's weird that most reviewers who don't think it's a masterpiece have "unscored" reviews? It looks like you're not allowed to give the game a low score, at least not on day one.

@MigGui: Nah...those sites don't use scores for their reviews. There's really nothing to read into it. They never score and just provide a review that gives the reviewer's opinions and a lot of them have openly said they don't do it because they think the numerical scoring tends to have more value attached to it than and distract from the actual observations the review is making.

ETA: IGN's score had been added above by the time I posted this, but that's a different issue. GS should've gotten it right the first time.

@MigGui:

Why would you when the reviewer doing so has to go dark on social media for a least a month to avoid all the death threats coming their way?

Unscoring your review means people have to actually *read what was written* rather than leap to the score and scream "How could they score it this low!? For what possible reason!?"

So I guess it really begs the question of...are the reviewers biased, or was this game actually extremely overhyped to the point of where it didn’t live up to said hype when people finally got their hands on it?

Guess we will find out in a couple days for sure

One thing I see among the reviews is some of these “game breaking bugs.” Isn’t this game supposed to get a huge day one patch? I think it’s kinda unfair to judge it based on that if they’re playing the unpatched version.

@Thanatos2k: Your attribution of an agenda to GS somewhat violates Hanlon's Razor though. Assuming the agenda were true, then yeah, explaining someone's post as being the result of stupidly falling for said agenda would comport with Hanlon's Razor, but that first requires the leap of attributing some nefarious "agenda" in the first place.

"Review roundup" shows 5 unscored reviews, 2 of the rare middling reviews, 1 review is false currently saying unscored about IGN who gave a 9/10, and none of the 34 9/10 or higher reviews that currently make up the lions share of current reviews.

Were you even trying here gamespot? There are literally 40+ scored reviews at the time of writing this that you could have chosen from to give a more accurate depiction of the general attitude of the reviews out there.

Most of these reviews seam like they don't actually hate the game but rather the game company that made it.

Don't get me wrong here, I think the CDPR has huge issues with Transphobia they have yet to make amends for but, Cyberpunk 2077 looks amazing and I can't wait to play it.

Don't mark a game down because you hate a company's or the fanbase's politics.

That very reason is why "Game Journalism" is on the verge of being completely dead.

@dragonsama: Are you talking about the mix-it-up ad? As somebody who is trans, I can't for the life of me see how that ad was in anyway transphobic. It's pretty evident, when looking at the context, that the image itself wasn't transphobic but, in fact, very supportive of trans folx. The ad itself was more of a commentary of the corporate world in CP2077 and it should be incredibly obvious given that this is an IN-GAME ad, not an ad for the game. Additionally, CDPR has gone out of their way to include transfolx options for incoming players.

And as for that unfortunate and terrible tweet made earlier, the person in charge of that account was fired and publicly criticized as well as CDPR apologizing for their ex-employees actions. Saying that the company has huge issues with transphobia over one social media handler's decision and a very misinterpreted in-game ad is a huge stretch. Please stop speaking for us and putting words in our mouths.

@ValedictorianXD: CDPR using a "Did you just assume my gender" joke kicked it off. They tweeted a bunch of transphobic jokes and then that poster happened. It's not one incident in isolation.

Following that a cisgendered woman cosplayed as that poster, dildo stuffed down her pants, and was promoted on CDPR's social media. She's also a transphobe.

Again, it's not just one thing. They *keep doing it*.

Kind of strange the article says IGN is unscored. They gave it a 9/10 and it was released at the same time as the Gamespot review.

I also find it a little strange that almost every review on here is unscored when there are already a bevy of reviews out there.

It seems most places are falling in the 9/10 range for Cyberpunk. What I find more interesting however is how I'm not seeing as many 10/10's as I thought there would be. In fact, of the big name gaming outlets I haven't seen any. Perhaps that is more telling than anything else.

Regardless, I have a feeling people who have been waiting for this game won't even care what these reviews say. Cyberpunk could score 1/10 and they would still swoop in and buy it.

Now more than ever I have noticed less of an emphasis on review scores from the established gaming media sites in the minds of gamers. If anything, it seems they are listening more to the review/commentary of social media influencers for what they feel is a more honest and unbiased assessment.

@videogameninja: I would assume that lack of 10/10 scores is due to the game not being 10/10, at the very least not in the state it was reviewed. Every review I've seen mentioned a ton of technical issues. You can't give the game a 10 if it doesn't work well at the promise that it will be fixed later.

@videogameninja: Gamespot has the tendency to show only reviews that are matching their own scores when they think they messed up , that an a bit of poor journalism like you mentioned failing to see the 9 in the IGN video , makes them a pure joke , I actually am thinking of dropping browsing this website anymore cause of that bullshit

Don't get me wrong I am not against scoring the game low I am just against them being like
"Hey , the game is a 7 , check out all the people who think that the game is a 7 as well "
