Cyberpunk 2077 Sells 13 Million Copies At Launch

The RPG sold a huge number of copies at launch, despite some volume of returns.

Developer CD Projekt Red has announced a new sales figure for Cyberpunk 2077. The embattled RPG sold more than 13 million copies as of December 20, which makes it one of the most successful RPG launches of all time.

CD Projekt Red said the number covers sales across all platforms, and it also factors in "returns submitted by retail clients in brick-and-mortar as well as digital storefronts." From the wording of the news release, it sounds like 13 million is the number of copies sold, including returns, except for those filed to CDPR when this news release went out.

Now Playing: Cyberpunk 2077 Review

Here is the exact wording that CDPR used: "This figure represents the estimated volume of retail sales across all hardware platforms (factoring in returns submitted by retail clients in brick-and-mortar as well as digital storefronts), i.e. the 'sell-through' figure, less all refund requests e-mailed directly to the Company by the publication date of this report in the framework of the 'Help Me Refund' campaign."

CDPR said it chose to disclose this information to help appease investors and shareholders. "The Management Board has decided to disclose the above information in the form of a current report due to its potential impact on investment-related decisions," the company said.

CDPR is a publicly traded company in Poland, and the company's share price has cratered since the release of Cyberpunk 2077, which in turn has cost the company's founders more than $1 billion in wealth.

CDPR previously disclosed that pre-orders for Cyberpunk 2077 reached 8 million by launch, so this suggests that the game sold an additional 5 million copies after release. The developer did not disclose the specific number of returns for Cyberpunk 2077.

4 guys lost a billion dollars alone. I don't think this sales number is going to appease anyone.

@so_hai: How sure are you that other video game companies don't see these same dips, or any dips at all? It will fluctuate with all companies. Long term, expect it to climb back to where it was. A rough launch to be sure, but there is the basis of a fantastic game buried beneath bugs, and almost every one of CDPR's other games have launched in similar states. In a year's time, this game will be highly polished, and have the same "comeback kid" story that No Man's Sky had.

@bdrtfm: I bet they regret calling the executives and throwing hissy fits when it was delayed past Black Friday and then demanding that it be released in time for Xmass no matter what, eh?

I'm loving it to death. Yes, it's got problems - some will be fixed, others are probably structural and won't. But this is exactly what I wanted out of the game. And with RT cranked up to Ultra it's freaking gorgeous. Not seen anything quite like it.

If any of you played Shadowrun on Sega Genesis, this is basically the direct descendant of that. Morrowind and Shadowrun Genesis had a baby and created this (complete with modern Bethesda jank :-P )

@xantufrog: Feel the same way. It has a been a blast.

If you are an open world purist, this game will probably spit in your face, but if you just like games in general, across a wide variety of genres, there is something for you in this game.

@xantufrog: What if Fallout wasn't just an empty wasteland and the nuclear event wasn't the cliched post-apocalypse scene? What if Skyrim had actually good characters and dialogue? what is GTA was first person and gave you loads of options for building your character? what if we threw in a bit of Deus Ex saelf-modification and made it a real open world instead of the fakery Deus Ex does for open world? There's elements of a LOT of games in this and largely well done takes on it. I get vibes from different games at different times while playing and mostly in a good way.

There are elements that don't live up to some of the games from which you're getting the vibes of course...for example, the driving isn't up to GTA standards and unless you spend some real time putzing with the vertical and horizontal sensitivities, boost, deadzone, etc. and tweaking your controller in the advanced options, the shooting is going to feel janky...but it largely fits all together and becomes more than the sum of its parts.

Too bad that sometimes you mix up politics a tad too "much" because your gaming knowledge is very good and can make interesting points and conversation.

@esqueejy: I also wish Deus Ex was open world sometimes rather than semi-open world. It really is an awesome setting. At the same time though, I imagine it would be much more expensive to make a full open world and it can often upset the pace of the story.

@gamer112696: Yeah. It's a balancing issue. Deus Ex prides itself in presenting you with discrete puzzles to solve in different ways depending on the manner in which you've built your character and how your abilities will open up options for solving those puzzles. That becomes waaaaaay harder if you're going for a full-on open world experience. The semi-open world approach they use allows them to create the options for different pathways to solving the situation while still having control over how it plays out I think. If they opened it up too much, the possibilities multiply and they suddenly have to address way more questions of "what if the player does THIS?"

Just played it for a while on the Series X, and damn, it's a true next-gen game. I can see why the older consoles had problems with it.

Well, poor console release aside, it's a really fun game and I am happy with it. Has a few glitches to iron out (do not exit your vehicle if it is flipped over unless you want to fall through the bottom of the world!) but honestly it's still worth it to me.

I will be waiting for some updates before I start my second and third playthrough, however.

In either case, good for CDPR. I hope they learn from this and become a better company.

If anyone is wondering why they released the game in the state it was in - THIS IS WHY.

Stop preordering games or this happens over and over and over. Have you learned nothing?

@Thanatos2k: Just about. I never pre-order unless it's something I KNOW I'm not going to be able to pick up due to limited quantities, like a Senran Kagura game or what have you. There's literally NO reason to pre-order a game that's going to be heavily available. It's like the people who pre-order Call of Duty games... Really?

@Thanatos2k: I very rarely pre-order games, maybe once every other year, but I have never been burned before by games I have pre-ordered. I have consistently always enjoyed the games I have chosen to buy early. I pre-ordered this game, and have been enjoying it a lot, so the streak continues.

@gr4h4m833zy: They didn't. Their stock price went down, which is imaginary money. Clickbait writers pretend like that means they lost money. Note they say "wealth" because that's the only word they can technically get away with.

@Thanatos2k: Imaginary money. LOL. I guess your bank account is imaginary as well since they don't actually have a box full of money with your name on it sitting in a vault. Even banks keep most of their money in banks other than their own.

@jteagle: But stocks aren't like actual money. You can't go buy groceries with stocks, or purchase Christmas gifts with stocks. They do hold real value, but they are different than cold hard cash.

This game did make back all of its development costs and then turned profit, but the value of the company went down because of bad press and broken promises. The financial storm surrounding this game is just one piece of evidence that shows that actual money and stock money are very different beasts, and not always tied to one another.

@P00DGE: You could absolutely use that stock to make purchases, you’d just have to sell it first. It’s exactly like gold in the sense that its value depends on a fluctuating market and you’d have to convert it to cash to use it, except you’d never hear anyone say gold isn’t worth anything. You could also think of it like keeping money in a bank considering it’s not physically in your pocket and you’d have to go through a few extra steps anytime you wanted to use it. Money and stock are intrinsically tied and far from being “very different beasts”.

True, stock doesn’t have inherent worth, but neither does cash when you think about it. It’s worth what people are willing to trade for it.

@Cikatriz_ESP: The value of a stock fluctuates a lot more than the value of a dollar though, and differs from company to company. Which is why the value of a company can be so much different than the money it is earning.

Even after this fraud, they are more worried about their bottom line than fixing their reputation going forward.

THE ONLY, reason they are releasing this is due to the 2+ law firms considering class action lawsuits for deceiving investors. As far as the consumer is concerned, they could care less, their plan worked, and despite a marginal amount of refunds they profited off of lies, and so the cycle continues.

I hope those lawsuits and consumer related litigation sparks up regardless. One less bloodsucking, used car salesmen like entity in the world is never a bad thing.

@cage_92: “13m is the sell-through figure - that is, it's the estimated volume of retail sales across all hardware platforms, factoring in returns submitted by physical and digital shops, less all refund requests emailed directly to CD Projekt by the 22nd December.”

In other words, only the returns done directly through CDPR were subtracted from the total. Returns done through Sony, Microsoft, Best Buy, Amazon, etc. (the vast majority of returns) are still counted as being sold among the 13 million.

I'm sure those launch sales could've reached even RDR2 levels if they had actually delivered what their marketing promised. Alas, it wasn't meant to be.

But still, 13 million is an enormous number, of course, especially for a lie.

If only the management did as much of an astounding job as the marketing department did.
