Cyberpunk 2077 Sells 13 Million Copies At Launch

The RPG sold a huge number of copies at launch, despite some volume of returns.

Developer CD Projekt Red has announced a new sales figure for Cyberpunk 2077. The embattled RPG sold more than 13 million copies as of December 20, which makes it one of the most successful RPG launches of all time.

CD Projekt Red said the number covers sales across all platforms, and it also factors in "returns submitted by retail clients in brick-and-mortar as well as digital storefronts." From the wording of the news release, it sounds like 13 million is the number of copies sold, including returns, except for those filed to CDPR when this news release went out.

Now Playing: Cyberpunk 2077 Review

Here is the exact wording that CDPR used: "This figure represents the estimated volume of retail sales across all hardware platforms (factoring in returns submitted by retail clients in brick-and-mortar as well as digital storefronts), i.e. the 'sell-through' figure, less all refund requests e-mailed directly to the Company by the publication date of this report in the framework of the 'Help Me Refund' campaign."

CDPR said it chose to disclose this information to help appease investors and shareholders. "The Management Board has decided to disclose the above information in the form of a current report due to its potential impact on investment-related decisions," the company said.

CDPR is a publicly traded company in Poland, and the company's share price has cratered since the release of Cyberpunk 2077, which in turn has cost the company's founders more than $1 billion in wealth.

CDPR previously disclosed that pre-orders for Cyberpunk 2077 reached 8 million by launch, so this suggests that the game sold an additional 5 million copies after release. The developer did not disclose the specific number of returns for Cyberpunk 2077.

Please tell me why, after being caught in several lies, anyone should believe this claim that 13 million copies of the game have been sold despite the number of refunds? Because I can't believe a damn thing CDPR has to say about anything anymore and yet this keeps floating to the surface.

The company was worth about 8.5b before the disastrous launch. Since then, it's lost about 50% of its market share, or just over a billion in value. They paid out a ton of refunds for the game. Sony, Microsoft and other retailers also paid out plenty of refunds. Even taking this number at face value, that would be some $780m from pre-orders of the game and units sold just after launch.

The suspicious part is that it supposedly factors in those refunds, which were substantial. Let's say a fifth of all sales, for argument's sake. That would be about 2.6m units or $156m. CDPR loves playing with numbers and making big bold statements that simply aren't true when held up to the light. I can believe the 13m units sold thanks to the years of hype. I do not believe for one second that it factors in the refunds because it doesn't make any sense.

Two class action lawsuits now, with 13 different law firms involved. And government investigation by Poland's consumer watchdog group and a new roadmap that is even less informative than that apology video released a few days ago by CDPR.

They've lied so many times in the past and will continue to do so. Why the hell keep rehashing this story when none of it can be verified independently?

I love the game but it has crashed a few times and had to restart the game. Very frustrating.

Did you knew that CDPR is literally telling you not to play their game for too much because it will brick your saves? Like imagine a dev of an open world game ("the biggest and most immersive open world" at that. their own words) telling you not to play for long or craft many items. Imagine that.

@hardwenzen: Point of clarification though, and not a defense of CDPR, as this needs to be fixed regardless, but the amount you have to craft or duplicate to get over the 8 MB limit seems to be unnaturally massive upon testing, and reports are of course being exaggerated as more common than how rare they are. Here's one independent Cyberpunk 2077 content creator's test results.

@so_hai: So players don't have to worry unnecessarily that they won't be able to finish the game or side quests in one playthrough, as long as they aren't crafting or duping thousands of armors or weapons. It wasn't clear how much of it would put the file over 8 MB on initial reports until tested.

@sabredj: We're still talking about a top tier blockbuster game from a AAA studio with many years of development experience. They should have known this would be a possibility. Heck, I don't care much for open world games and even I know there are lots of people out there who love to push these games to the limit.

@sabredj: OK, but that's still such an unnecessary problem for a game 8 years in development.

If I decide to pick this game up, it'll be in several years for 10 bucks on sale alongside my 4080 (whenever that comes out). There's so many devs/games to support instead that release finished/polished games at launch. I get that it wasn't the devs decision, but I can't support this "release now, fix later" mentality that has plagued this industry for so long.

@esqueejy: 13 million copies sold, yet 28 million copies refunded. I saw some suspicious vans outside of game stop and Best Buy that were supposed to be bringing in food for the employees during launch but instead were TAKING copies of Cyberpunk and loading them into the vans. Did Project Red do something crazy with them? 😂

I bought on ps4, the uproar is overblown..Andromeda, Anthem had worse bugs and launch issues and if you go back far enough Fallout New Vegas and even Skyrim Ps3 version were even worse. I am 53 hours in and am having fun. The real story should be all the features that were removed

@BlueCryztal: Well, no, that's not quite true, but it's also true. See, doodling on a napkin is technically "development", so, yes, they could easily have been "developing" the game for 7 or 8 years. The question is how long the game was in DEDICATED development.

I decided not to seek a refund. I still want to play it, I'll just wait for 3-4 months, and then pick it back up.

@thecupidstunts: That makes no sense. If you won't play for 3 months, then refunding now is the best decision as there is no downside. Holding it means you paid full price for an old game.

@so_hai: It is nasty I agree but they will not be on my blacklist because they also have done enough to have mine and many other gamers goodwill. Look, if they would fu*k up more frequently like Ubi, EA, Activision, etc then okay they also would be a scummy company and I would understand the hate from everyone. This is literally their first f*uk up in 26 years. We never ever should write a company off at 1 mistake.

How would you feel when you have done so much for your manager over the span of 20 years and after 1 fu*k up he would write you off. Yes, indeed, you would feel miserable and let down. And it would be totally not fair to you.

Well, hopefully that shuts all those folks up who have been freaking out over every piece of news affecting CDPR. "Their stock price dropped. They're gonna go bankrupt." "Their investors want to sure them. They're gonna go bankrupt."

No matter how many returns there were, the game has already sold a huge amount of copies due to all the hype. And it's probably still selling well even now. And sales will only pick up further as the game gets patched up, until eventually everyone will forget about this fiasco and people will only praise Cyberpunk for the game it has become. And that it should have been at launch. If only CDPR was smart enough to give it enough time.

@Atzenkiller: Yeah the game is a beautiful masterpiece, i go around the city in pure bliss how well crafted a city it is, that's actually alive, that's not an easy thing to do, and by alive i mean that the city lives even after shutting down. It doesn't exist only around you.
