Cyberpunk 2077's Multiplayer Is More Than Just A Mode

Don't call it a mode, CD Projekt says--it's a full standalone game.

CD Projekt Red has cleared up some confusion about the upcoming multiplayer game set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe. Executive Adam Kicinski said during the company's latest earnings briefing that it's not right to call it just a "mode" for Cyberpunk 2077 (read our Cyberpunk 2077 review for details on the single-player).

Instead, it should be thought of as a standalone product. "So, first, we don't call it modes," Kicinski said (transcription via Seeking Alpha). "It's a separate dedicated production, a big production. We think about it as a standalone product."

Now Playing: How Sex And Relationships Work In Cyberpunk 2077

The Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer game is connected to the single-player game, but CD Projekt Red sees it as an "independent production" with a team working on it that's separate from the team building the single-player game.

Kicinski went on to say that CD Projekt Red is purposefully keeping quiet on the multiplayer game right now, and that is likely to keep the focus on building hype for Cyberpunk 2077's single-player game. Kicinski said people can expect news about Cyberpunk 2077's multiplayer game to come during Q1 of 2021.

What we do know about the Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer game is that it will have some sort of microtransaction system, but it's unknown at this stage what business model it will use. Regarding the microtransactions, CD Projekt Red has said the goal is to provide users with content to purchase that feels like a fair transaction for their money.

Cyberpunk 2077's multiplayer spin-off is not going to come out anytime soon. The last we heard, CD Projekt Red said you should expect it to release in 2022 at the soonest. The studio is certainly best-known for single-player games. It has established a reputation over the last decade as one of the premier developers of role-playing games. The Witcher 3 also enjoyed renewed popularity recently due to the success of The Witcher Netflix series.

After multiple delays, Cyberpunk 2077 releases on December 10 for Xbox One, PS4, Stadia, and PC, with next-gen versions arriving in 2021. The Stadia version was previously due to release after the other versions of the game but is now launching alongside them.

I'm not sure if I'd want to see pvp in it. Balancing the cybernetic abilities might be too much for CDPR to get right.

Meh I don't care about multiplayer. I know many do and will enjoy it. I just hope all the focus doesn't go there...looking at you Rockstar. Why can't these companies make solo single player DLC anymore? I mean they can do both...offer online game play, updates to that and also some extra single player experiences. *Old man climbs down from his hill and goes inside to grumble to himself*

Honestly, ever since fallout 3 i thought bethesda would always have my heart. But when fallout 76 came i swore my love for bethesda was done. But with the arrival of the outer worlds and seeing what else obsidian has up their sleeve thats in the works, plus cyberpunk 2077, that hole in my heart has been more than filled. Sure the witcher 3 was awesome but i just never cared as much for it as i do the other games. Plus there's also the perfect GTA V and red dead redemption 2 to fall back on as well.

It will be a mini mmo just like Destiny except with actual content and not made on a toaster engine.

@so_hai: No, it sounds like they're releasing Cyberpunk, and then they're releasing a multiplayer game.

I really hope that there is the chance to create your own gangs in it and the chance to customise it to your vision.

It has to have PvE as well as PvP for me as well, I'm not fond of the continual fragging of other players over and over again.

We already know it'll have microtransactions, so what hype can there be? Pay 10 bucks for a blue gun.

releasing CYBER punk on CYBER monday would have been epic.....but one can only dream. I initially had not interest for this game but after getting the new consoles, im all about immersion, and this game seems to do that correctly.....
