Daisy Ridley's New Star Wars Movie Goes In A "Different Direction"

Ridley is coming back to play Rey once again in another Star Wars film.

Daisy Ridley is coming back to play Rey once again in a new Star Wars film, and she's now said that this movie will take the sci-fi series to potentially new places. But it remains to be seen exactly what that means.

Speaking to AlloCine, Ridley said she was happy to sign on to appear in her fourth Star Wars movie after learning what the story would be. Of course, Ridley is not divulging what this is, but it was enough to draw her back.

"Once I knew what the story was and everything, I knew that it was something that I really wanted to do I think it's a really fantastic exploration of the Star Wars world," she said. "It's a really cool way of taking the story on in a bit of a different direction."

She added: "I loved making all three films and I'm very happy to get to do it again."

Ridley made her Star Wars debut as Rey in 2015's The Force Awakens, going on to reprise that central character for The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker.

Before this, Ridley told Collider her new Star Wars movie was "not what I expected" in terms of the story. She also mentioned that she does not know if this will be the first in a new trilogy or not.

Oscar-winning director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is directing the new movie, and this marks the first time a woman has ever directed a Star Wars movie. "We're in 2024 now, and I think it's about time we had a woman come forward to shape the story in a galaxy far, far away," she said.

In addition to the new Rey film, James Mangold is making a Star Wars movie about the early days of the Jedi, while Dave Filoni has his own Star Wars movie cooking as well. Taika Waititi is also making a Star Wars movie.

Well, at least it can't go in a worse direction.

Hopefully.

@Cikatriz_ESP: Don't tempt the devil, we have no idea how low Disney can actually go.

She wasn't the problem in the sequel trilogy, so this isn't "bad" news. I just hope they properly plan out their direction for whatever they are doing. The overarching story of their latest projects are a mess.

@G-Corleone: you think she was? It was the writing that was the issue, not this actress or her character

Oh boy, here we go again with the whole ''subverting expectations'' nonsense that TLJ tried. And we all know how well that went smh.

@ironhorse89: Honestly, The Last Jedi was my least disliked sequel because it tried new things. The Rey/Kylo plot line was actually interesting, and if it hadn't been sandwhiched between the Poe and Fin stories, which sucked out loud, TLJ might have been a pretty good Star Wars movie.

... But, "It's totally different this time!" is also what everybody says when they're pitching a movie in a series that's overstayed its welcome.

@ironhorse89: Yeah, it went pretty well. For a while it seemed like Star Wars might abanoun its tired old cliches and do something new and interesting.

But our shitty toxic fandom is loud as shit, so we got the purile, reactionary mess that was the Rise of Skywalker.

@korva09: I mean, let's not pretend TLJ wasn't also a huge mess. ONE of its three story threads was new and interesting; the other two were burning trash heaps of nonsense that undermined the whole movie.

Rise of Skywalker was worse, for sure, but the difference between complete trash and trash wish some unrealized potential isn't a whole lot. : \

@mogan: Exactly. RJ's turd wanted to deconstruct 6 movies while JJ's only wanted to deconstruct 1. Both turds belong in the sewer regardless of which was bigger.

@natphoenix: But I do wish Rian Johnson had gotten to do his thing more and then they'd let him handle the third movie as well. The Rey/Kylo storyline in TLJ was actually an interesting and different take on Star Wars. And Rise of Skywalker is the worst Star Wars movie anybody's yet made in large part because it tries to retcon TLJ, reset and start over all in the third act of the trilogy.

@mogan: good points. If i may, id also like to add that RoS also disrespected everything and everyone blatantly: characters, previous movies, lore, audience, Kanye. Nobody was spared..it was a catastrophe.

Would’ve also preferred to see what Johnson had in mind. The end scene with the kid force-grabbing a broom? That scene alone had more potential than 3hour-long RoS

@chrismmm: By all means keep lapping up mediocrity as long as it has the Star Wars label slapped on it.

Uh oh. Star Wars fans don't like when the series goes in a different direction.

Star Wars fans also don't like when its a rehash.

Star Wars fans also just kinda hate Star Wars.

@judaspete: Whether a movie is a rehash or a new direction doesn't really matter if the execution of either one is as bad as the Sequel Trilogy. Those movies are terrible because they're poorly written, not because they do or do not have new ideas; they present no coherent ideas either way.

Diasy Ridley's new Star Wars movie is really going to have to prove itself, no matter what direction it goes in.

@judaspete: That's the thing. The SW fanbase is so enormous, there are many popular opinions that contradict each other as well as a large portion of that fanbase that don't talk about it online so we don't even hear their opinions.

Disney should just ignore everyone and make a good non-canon movie. So what if it's considered fan-fiction.

@btotheotothejtothef: The SW fanbase was enormous. Now its just a small group of people who like Disney enough not to care about what Star Wars use to be. Youtube videos trashing Disney get more views than Disney Plus does these days.

I like the pic for the video. She's cute and looks just crazy enough to be a an ex-girlfriend who's complaining to me, about me and what I have been doing wrong.

@clubhouse: They did the same thing with Marvels. That Director had ZERO experience when she and yes I said SHE was handed a massive project. There were countless reshoots and the director vanished from sight before the movie came out. Pretty sure that the director even noped out before post-production was even finished....

EDIT: Yea. Nia Dacosta. She did 2 budget movies before Marvels. The latest Candyman which came and went so fast people forgot it existed and Little Woods back in 2018.

@ratchet200: Ehhh Normally you would be right. But not this time.

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy has been on record plenty of times to be a MASSIVE push on the whole gender politics scene. She even outright stated she hopes her works make men specifically uncomfortable because she gets off on it. I have 0 doubt her movie will be gender politics with a Star Wars label.

Is that direction into the ground? Because I don't know anyone that's serious about wanting to watch another "sequel". And the latest announcements just makes it worse.

Would be best to let things cool off and at least pretend that you're catering to the actual fanbase (that would actually want to spend money on a SW movie experience)...
