D&D Online to open Dragon's Vault

First module adds 15 new dungeons and large-scale raid on large, scaled red dragon; free add-on will be released in April.

Pen, paper, and imagination can only go so far. TSR's Dungeons & Dragons relied heavily on players' creativity, but for those who needed a push in the right direction, the tabletop-game publisher released modules. These extras were filled with new keeps, quests, and monsters for dungeon masters to challenge magic-users, thieves, and clerics.

Turbine, headquartered in Westwood, Massachusetts, is taking a similar approach with its massively multiplayer online role-playing game, Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach. The developer today announced the first module for the PC game will be released in April.

Titled Dragon's Vault, the module will add content to the MMORPG, including 15 new dungeons that all character levels can crawl through. Turbine has also added a large-scale raid featuring the Vault of Night, which is guarded by one of the most feared enemies in D&D lore--the fire-breathing red dragon.

This first of several planned modules will be free for all DDO subscribers and will be a digital download. Turbine is also planning more free modules for the future, as well as some retail expansion packs.

Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach was released on February 28, is rated T for Teen, and retails for $49.99. Check back later this week for GameSpot's review to see whether or not Stormreach is worth its weight in gold pieces.

Best RPG of all time...? Please be serious. Baldur's Gate was true AD&D and Neverwinter Nights with all its player created content was indeed much more interesting. DDO has its merits but on the whole I would not pay a subscription to play it.

This should be called what it is. I have no problem with this game. I played the beta and did not see anything special about it. I'm not saying it's a bad game, it's just not for me. This add on being release right after launch is really just finished gameplay that did not make it to the final release. The game was rushed, just like almost every other game out there. This was just part of the game intended for release but didn't make it. I still have no problem with this but do when they try and push it out as a "great free" addtion to the product to try and move sales.

It may be real D&D, but that doesn't mean it has the polish of a *real* great game. It doesn't. However, it's certainly worth a look -- just don't expect the depth of a full-fledged MMO like EQ or WoW. No PvP, no crafting, no shared world space events, and no way to make exp besides *finishing* quests. This is your instance-based MMO concept distilled to its minimal form.
