Danish TV channel apologises for mistaking Assassin's Creed for Syria

Employee believed the image from Assassin's Creed was of Damascus' skyline.

Danish television channel TV2 has apologised for using an image of Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed to illustrate a news report about Syria.

No Caption Provided

The channel's head of news, Jacob Nybroe, said to the Times of Israel on Sunday that the mix-up was a terrible mistake and a "reminder to us all of the importance of verifying the sources of pictures."

Nybroe said the channel only learned about the mistake last week and said an employee for the network found the image online and believed it to be a photo of Damascus' skyline.

The shot from Assassin's Creed was broadcast behind news anchor Cecilie Beck on February 26.

In another news report about Syria last year, the BBC broadcast the logo of Halo's fictional United Nations Space Command in a report about the very real United Nations Security Council.

It validates the graphic designers job, they should get a nice bonus.

I'm not sure whether I should be surprised and happy about how advanced game graphics are nowadays or sad about the fact that news people cannot distinguish the difference between video games and not...

LOL, That's stupid and unprofessional, the BBC part as well. These channels need to do more work, they aren't entertainment or just showing people anything, they are telling people about things that happen in reality, that are affecting real people, and they should be careful about it.

Its not really a big deal though, its still damascus whether virtual or not. Search it up on google images its like the 6th picture, so if anything, the guy who searched it up is just lazy. Either way assassins creed is either as popular as the actual city, or you have a lazy journalist.

This is actually pretty hilarious, but Ubisoft must feel proud to have created something realistic enough that it fooled some reporters

@most_games_r_ok By "reporters", I'm assuming you mean "lazy news-like-entertainment-show data collecting robots" because true reporters would probably be likely to spot the fact that the image is rendered graphics and not the real world.

Beyond that, using a photo generally requires credit and compensation go to the photographer. Paying for its use allows for the verification of the content of the photo.

This just points out that the 'news' is entertainment, not journalism.

Bet Ubisoft staff are high fiving their way round the office, the news reporter may look like a dipshit but that must secretly make the AC developers proud of their work

Don't worry though. News in Sweden isn't much different. I'm sure it's the same in most countries. It's just a matter of time before another blunder like this shows up somewhere.

Remember the one with the storm and the reporter was late and had a coworker throw sand around in the background?

i like it that we're approaching believable simulation with graphics. when we finally reach foto-realism, we won't have to buy new games or upgrade pc's anymore. it'll only be about the quality of the games. i hope it comes soon.

@Suikogaiden @BrunstigElg I´m talking about the cities in AC... They´re so well made and well researched! :P
And no, because they were talking about Syria in ancient and middle age times.. So a present-day real picture wouldn´t be as good if they were talking about middle age damascus...

@Suikogaiden It was actually about Damascus (and Syria) as one of the cradles of civilization and how alot of historical world heritage was in danger of being destroyed... So it was also about Syria in the middle ages - therefore it was actually a pretty good image to use in that context.. afterall, AC is known for its historically accurate depictions of cities throughout history....

wow, if only the current graphic level/data can cause be mistaken by reality.... I was considering if the movies are not totally wrong and our reality is really some kind of simulation and if we are actually NPCs in this sim, how the sense of immersion is created ? Any suggestions ?

@proletaryus If we're NPCs, then there IS no feeling of immersion, because we're just data in the game.

Star Ocean 3 was a good illustration of this concept.

This article genuinely made me laugh out loud. Fantastic.

However, does highlight the incompetence of someone working there.

@kamikazeespleen @laxsiber Now when I think about this situation. People aren't actually aware how much CG they are watching on movies and TV. I've been watching breakdowns from some moves and TV series recently. Sometimes it's really hard to tell what's real and what's edited or CG.
