Dark Cloud 2 is the Next PS2-on-PS4 Release

Level-5's classic RPG, Dark Cloud 2, will be available on PlayStation 4 from January 19 as part of Sony's ongoing initiative to re-release PS2 games.

The announcement was made on the PlayStation Blogcast, as reported by Gematsu. Dark Cloud 2 was originally released in 2002 in Japan and 2003 in western territories. The game was known in Europe as Dark Chronicle.

The last PS2 classic to be released on PS4 was Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits. Also in the library are Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, PaRappa the Rapper 2, and Twisted Metal Black.

Sony has confirmed that The King of Fighters 2000 will be added, and Rockstar's Max Payne may also be on the way, though this has not confirmed.

PlayStation president of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida previously said Sony will work "tirelessly" to release even more PS2 games for PS4 "on a regular basis." The company is also asking for your suggestions for which games should be added.

Yoshida also previously spoke out to defend the price point for the PS2 re-releases, which cost between $10-$15, saying the technology to implement PS4 features such as Trophies and Share requires significant investment.

"We are also able to add Trophies; some people really care about Trophies," he said. "So we can provide that. And it takes some time for our staff and QA and licensing and everything to bring back these games. So it takes us time and cost. So we felt that we should charge."

ok let me ask a question? since the ps2 games are being made available to play on your ps4 are we able to use our ps2 discs we have already purchased b4 or do we have to pay additional money for games we already have?

Always wanted to play this back in the day but could never find it at a price I was willing to pay for it.

Question: Would it still hold up and be worth playing today? If so, I will gladly drop the cash to play it on my PS4.

@ClintCommander: yes, it is one of the best PS2 games and it holds up fantastic thanks to the cel shaded graphics. Gameplay is great as ever. - Dark Cloud 1 aged a bit worse

I think what might have worked for Sony from a PR standpoint would have been to allow PS2 discs to work, but only be emulated in their original form. Then charge for the upscaling and trophy support for those who want it. People seem crazy about trophies anyway so I doubt it would have lost them much, if any, revenue.

People say you're not being forced to re-buy Ps2 games on Ps4 but disk support for Ps2 games is possible on Ps4 and they are literally disabling it. What if im one of the guys that dont care for trophies in these games and I rather pop my old copy in and play . I cant believe Playstation fans are defending this. Its hopeless giving any feed back when we arent being heard and the fans dont care!

@ChunkyDrawers: hell no. DC1 was fun and all, but DC2 tops it in every aspect. It looks much nicer thanks to cel shading, the gameplay is so much better, alows you to use short and ranged weapons without changing the character, actually has a story, has great new gameplay elements including the golf thing :D

@brn-dn: I'm not demanding it to be free, but atleast I'm just asking for it to have a reasonable price. Especially since we've played these games a more than a decade ago. Each Jak game on HD/trophies cost 7.99$ each and is doing just fine. Why can't this game? Now if they do something for Max Payne like add content from the PC port (60ftp, minor graphic enhance, mods, kungfu gameplay) then yes, I would pay 10 - 15$ no more, but if that's not the case, then it need to be less than 10$

@DanZillaUK: DC2 was certified before DC1 on the PS2 on PS4 scheme, but they chose to release them in order.

They have another 8 or 10 titles already certified and ready to drop, and the list will keep growing rapidly.

Expect to see anything that doesn't require multiplayer servers getting ported over the next few years.
