Dave Bautista Still Frustrated At Marvel's Treatment Of Drax

His whole history "seemed to get swept under the rug," according to the actor.

Actor and former wrestler Dave Bautista, perhaps best known for his role as Drax the Destroyer in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, continues to have strong opinions about Marvel's treatment of that character in the MCU. Recently, Bautista shared that he "was never asked" to voice the character in the upcoming Marvel animated anthology What If...?. On Monday, he tweeted that he now regularly "shakes [his] head" that the character won't get a satisfying conclusion.

Such comments are not unusual for Bautista, who also back in May let it be known that he wishes Marvel "would invest more in Drax… Drax has a really interesting backstory which they dropped the ball on." Clearly, Bautista feels a strong affinity for the character, though he is by far not alone in his fondness for his own performances. While Marvel has not responded to Bautista's criticisms, his own Guardians director, James Gunn, also voiced his astonishment over the character's subsequent treatment. Check out Bautista's latest comments in the tweet below.

When it comes to What If…?, at least, Bautista is hardly the only actor who isn't returning to their famous Marvel roles for the series. The actors who have historically played Tony Stark, Peter Parker, Steve Rogers, Carol Danvers, Ultron, Wanda Maximoff, Natasha Romanoff, Shuri, and Pepper Potts are now instead being portrayed by different actors. Although the animated series doesn't hit Disney+ until August 11, and Bautista isn't alone, it's still a bummer.

In related Bautista news, filming started earlier this summer in Greece for Knives Out 2. The actor is part of an impressive ensemble that also includes Daniel Craig, Kathryn Hahn, Kate Hudson, and Ethan Hawke. The plot details for Knives Out 2 are still unknown, but there has been speculation that it's about a wealthy family on a vacation gone horribly wrong.

I wonder if he would have reprised his role in the animation for the same pay of an adequate well casted VA.

I asked before if Drax was a big or deep character in the comics. They'll all responded me with "it's a secondary character" and less appreciative descriptions.

He’s one of three characters I wouldn’t want back for the third one, mainly because GOTG needs half it’s team members replaced just to freshen it up a bit. Perfect jumping off point for a cosmic character like Adam Warlock, Blue Marvel or Nova. Don’t need a bunch of set-up shows as a ways to introduce new characters.

His character was comic relief. That's it. For 10 years. If he didn't understand this the whole time, he was perfectly cast.

@n0matter: agreed. He’s being a diva when he should feel lucky he got this role. He seems kinda spoiled being in the wwe and coming back multiple times but not really enjoying it but needed the money. Other people have dreams of being a wrestler and this guy just takes things for granted and acts like he’s a big deal that deserves more.

Well Drax was okay in the comics, but never a 3 dimensional power house like say Dr Strange, Constatine, MAgneto, or even STarlord. The comics rebooted him too many times to care, and that was fine as Drax was a perfect anti-hero filler for the team.

Now in GotGalaxy Drax is/was some comic relief, and really that is fine. But if we look closer to his main motives .... Ronan was the one who killed his family at the order of Thanos. Ronan is dead, which takes Drax to Thanos, who is now also dead. Really the only path for Drax to take in GotG 3 is .... resolution. When telling a story you cannot do a U-turn or red herring with a side character without damaging the overall plot and or effect the rest of the team.

Would Drax make a good one off main character..... I just do not see it, no matter how well Bautista plays him. Maybe do an alternate origin story later on is about all that they could now that the character is set.

@jenovaschilld:

Kind of how I felt about Black Widow, actually. A great character, sure, but one who plays better off of other characters like Hawkeye or Captain America. A movie about Drax would be kind of pointless because we know where he came from - we don’t need to see his family die to understand his pain, as that’s already been communicated. What’s important is where he goes, which is ostensibly tied to the Guardians.

@reaperezekial: Black Widow is one of the oldest fem fatales in comic books and her character also has been taken down so many paths that it actually weakens the character, but !! Black Widow had some amazingly great series back in the 90s with Itsy Bitsy Spider, Red Room, and finely woven thread, and Name of the Rose. These were short one off series but they were centric to her and not her as part of a team, and some of the best tales in comics. "best series ever....(comic book guy voice)".

She always plays well off of any of the main series, but she also has some of her own best stories. And most of them were written by new comers like Devin Greyson, who was just like, 'hey new guy write something cool with this IP, women are hip right now'. Blows everyone's mind away. Right time and right place.

The black widow movie was pretty cool, a mix up of two stories, not all time great but an easy 7.5/10. For me them laying on the comic nostalgia button meant a lot.

I actually tend to agree with him. He's gone from Drax the destroyer to Drax the class clown. Thor's heading that way as well. I get you need some comedic relief in these movies, but turning a single character into a joke is not the way to do it.

Drax could easily just be a cgi side character like king shark from suicide squad. He's unnecessary. So is Dave.

The reason real reason Bautista is retiring from the Drax role is he doesn't want to "do what it takes (chemically)" at age 52. Which i don't blame him.

I think it's safe to say they didn't get MCU actors for the animated series because it would greatly increase the cost. Getting full-time voice actors is probably a lot cheaper.
