Days Gone Sold 9 Million Copies But That's Only Part Of The Story, Director Says [Update]

"Local studio management always made us feel like it was a big disappointment."

In response to the news that Ghost of Tsushima sold more than 8 million copies, the director of the PlayStation exclusive Days Gone revealed a sales number for the 2019 game.

Jeff Ross, who directed Days Gone and has subsequently left the studio, said on Twitter that when he left Sony, Days Gone had sold 8 million copies on console alone. The game has subsequently sold more on PlayStation consoles, plus a further 1 million+ on Steam, Ross said.

Now Playing: Days Gone - Launch Trailer

[Update: Ross has revealed the source of this sales information was a Trophy-tracking website that has since shut down. As reported by Push Square, Ross shared the info on David Jaffe's YouTube channel. Given the nature of the data, it's possible that sales were not, in fact, in excess of 8 million copies on PS4, as Trophy data may include things like multiple users who play a single copy. As a result, it's unclear just how well the game did in fact sell.]

Ross went on to claim that local studio management "always made us feel like it was a big disappointment." Ross said the press coverage--but not review scores--was a factor. "The press didn't help our case," Ross said.

Ross went on to say that Sony management had more faith in Death Stranding than Days Gone. The developer also spoke about the game's development, saying, "Development was a long slog, but we were a small team learning how to make our first open world game. All things considered, it's amazing we finished at all."

Ross left Bend Studio in December 2020. There are apparently no plans for a sequel, despite the huge sales, with Bend Studio now focusing on a new IP.

Days Gone was decent. Could have been better, but it was definitely refreshing. I would've loved to see what they could do with a sequel, would've snapped it up day 1 too.

A small studio, selling even a few million copies is an accomplishment. Where does it end? As long as you made a profit, be happy.

I have had my brand new PS5, black shell plates, the 2TB WD Black internal SSD, and 3 games (Returnal, Ratchet, and Miles Morales) still sitting in the box from beginning of Dec... Guess I'm waiting for Horizon before setting it up.

Been playing Immortals Fenyx Rising on Series X. Pretty decent game, though you feel like a hedge trimmer most of the time, lol. Xbox is my 3rd party, Gamepass console, while PS is my exclusives console. Nothing has grabbed me enough on PS5 to want to take it out of the box yet.

I considered the impact the giveaways had on the game, but I figured Ross must have considered that when he gave his numbers. So even the DIRECTORS of video games don't know their own numbers...yeesh, why do we even visit gaming news websites? The only news of any value in gaming is "Was it announced?" and "When is it releasing?". Everything else is just noise.

Jeff Ross's numbers are not correct. He forgets that PS5 owners had Days Gone for free for over a year on the PS Collection. In addition, it was given out for free on PS Plus in April 2021.

I generally liked what I played of Days Gone. Maybe 10 hours or so (on PS5, never played it on PS4) But I am just so tired of stealth in open world games. Im sick of hiding in bushes and watching AI walk around.

I dealt with it in TLOU2 and Ghosts because those narratives were exceptionally well done. Even me not quite enjoying the story overall in the end in TLOU2 I cant deny that it pulled me in. Days Gone I stopped caring pretty early on. Which makes the open world parts feel like work. Ghosts succeeded in the same way in that the parts surrounding the open world were incredible, hiding the same old open world tasks that you have to do.

But in no way would I consinder Days Gone a "bad" game in any scenario.

It's obvious Sony executives including Jim Ryan like to play favorites with their employees.

They go and praised Sucker Punch for Ghost of Tsushima sales but no mention at all of Days Gone while it sold more copies.

The game might not have resonated with critics but its sales accomplishment was worth of praise and acknowledgement at least to their own developers.

@johnny0779: You should read the update as it turns out it wasn't sales being counted from the website he got his info but from trophies. Which would be the PS+ free version of the game is counted among those "8 mil".

@pharos_haven: Well, even if it didn't sell 9 or 8 million, that game sold millions and that should be enough for some praise from your bosses. Jim Ryan doesn't give a shit and that's why Days Gone was like a after thought for him and Sony that no one gives a damn or care about.

I tried to like this game but i hated the story and the characters, controls are a bit crappy, and the missions are boring... The only thing I really like is the setting... I can't believe 8 million people bought this pos .. i got it for free on ps plus or else wouldn't of even tried it

The game was not that great. The loading times were god awful, and it is a title we all have seen a thousand times before. Days Gone was too big of a title for the team. You should have made a smaller title instead of trying to make something on a Sucker Punch or Insomniac level. It took you seven years to do something that should have taken three to four years. It took the team a whole console generation to put out one game. Why should Sony waste resources for a team to take seven years on one game when Insomniac can put out one title a year. The company already has two titles on PS5 plus two more coming. Sucker Punch spent six years on a title with hardly any loading even on PS4 and the game has not dipped below the thirty dollar price tag only for it to sell well again on PS5. Same thing with the Santa Monica studio. They made God of War 2018 in five years, and it sold extremely well. I am surprised Sony greenlit Days Gone to be made especially when the theme is similar to The Last of Us.

@laurenriley3332:

Can't say I know of any other open world game that has large (500+) organized hordes dotted around the map that come out or hide away depending on the weather and time of day. Felt like a pretty unique experience to me in that regard. Never knew if/when you might accidentally stumble across one which is incredibly dangerous early in the game and keeps the tension up while exploring.

Sure most of the other stuff in the game is very much like a typical Ubisoft open world game, but seeing as it's up to the same standard as ubisoft games, imo, i don't understand why it scored so low when compared them. Those large hordes and the fact PS4's weak cpu could handle them is pretty amazing imo.

Loading times got reduced, as well as install size (67GB down to 39GB), after some patching.

I dunno. I thought it deserved better reception from critics. Felt like a 7.5/10 game to me, maybe even 8 after all the updates and extra gameplay modes were added. Was way better than 5/10 GS gave it but then i supposed the early review copies were bug ridden.

@analgrin: You've hit the nail on the head, in terms of "innovation" versus "game design "

They absolutely took the concept pioneered by They Are Billions, and innovated/developed it into the truly-cool horde code in the game. I hope this part of their codebase finds another life as a different kind of game -- try it for something more co-op survival-based without a clunky narrative, or a more strategic game genre... Or even a different era/enemy type altogether!

But that was it -- the rest of the game was a collection of stuff that other games did better, before AND after. This is the job of game designers, directors, and producers. "Take the cool tech and innovations, and make it FUN to play for long periods of time."

Never played it, but it always surprises me when a game sells above 5 million copies and it's not considered a hit. I think Battlefront 2, despite your personal feelings on it, sold 11 million copies or something around there and EA said it missed their sales goal. That's kind of insane.

Anyways, I don't know the production budget of these games, wish we had more transparency on it, but 8 million sounds pretty impressive to me for a new IP.

Given that it is a long, very well told handcrafted story that obviously had more put into it than 99 percent of all games, maybe everyone should shut up this time?

Watch Dogs, Quantum Break... You all realize we have not seen a game with the production value of these two since we sh*t all over them then took it back right?

*another is SWBF1. The photogrammetry was not present in the second and it showed. Another good pick up and play game with the last quality levels DICE made. Quality as in memorable forever. Sh*t all over the first game and budget was cut in half for the second.

@treechopper88: I played/watched Quantum Break, and it wasn't horrible, but it wasn't good. Producing a game and a TV that were linked like that couldn't have been cheap or easy either.

I get why that game never saw a sequel.

@mogan: I actually just hated the characters, but the incredible production values of the game pulled me along for some time. Kind of hard to keep pushing forward when you despise the characters and don't want to hear another word from them.

I’ll admit that the story in this game was mediocre until the secret ending which added a layer that I would have been excited for a sequel for; but the hoard mechanic had me playing for 70+ hours and is what really made the game worth playing. I’m fine with them abandoning the Days Gone IP because we all know they’ll be keeping the horde mechanic and implementing it into there it next game. Excited to see what this studio does next.

@gamerforlife96: You know, I did a text search for the words 'white' and 'male' in both GameSpot's and IGN's review of Days Gone, and neither showed up outside the comments. In fact, IGN's review called Deacon's character endearing and likeable, and says it's the overall story that holds the writing back.

In fact, the "gruff white male protagonist" quote is from an IGN preview, in which the writer says they were initially skeptical of the character, but ended up a lot more invested in him than they expected to be by the end of the preview. The actual context of that quote does not actually support the idea that reviewers marked the game down because the protagonist was a white dude.

I believe one of the reviewers put it in a tweet.. . maybe they deleted if after backlash? I remember one reviewer also wondered why all the infected are white (i believe this was also in a tweet) . . even though it is explained in the main story which made me wonder if they were paying any attention at all.

Also on Kotaku in their review they say "It is exhausting to watch another gruff white dude experience the extremes of humanity brought about by disaster. . ."

@mogan: You did have a gamespot reviewer complain on twitter that Deacon looking at his wifes ass was distasteful. And the fact IGN even mentioned his race is telling. Most game journalist are activist first and actually suck at gaming.

@silentchief: That’s a pretty weak blanket statement, but even if reviewers do tend to suck at games a promote their ideals in their reviews, it doesn’t actually appear Days Gone’s middling scores at GS and IGN were based on race or racism.

Days Gone is a nice game, not close to what he thinks of his game - a 7.5/10.

It's 2nd time already with his negative attitude - could someone ban him from twitter? I remember him saying "if you buy our game at discount we're losing money" - with statements like this I'm not buying any game he's going to work on. Don't want my money? fine by me.

To be fair the game hit the bargain bin in record time and that is what accounts for the majority of its sales.

The moment I knew Days Gone was a zombie game is the day I wrote it off.

Hope the studio is putting its talents and tech to better use than another generic zombie open world. Maybe a new Syphon Filter?

@brxricano: I'm a huge fan of zombies that are faster than the human player. I'd love for a game to be made that really makes even a single zombie encounter feel overwhelming. No aiming reticle, no hud, 3rd person, limited ammo, and zombies that sprint faster than you and kill in one or two hits. It should feel like an accomplishment to even defeat one zombie. Set the period during the initial outbreak/panic phase of a zombie apocalypse, like the first few days. Then task the player with surviving/escaping. Too many zombie games and movies occur in the dreary post apocalyptic aftermath, and too many have characters that are badass zombie slayers; I want to feel powerless, where my only option is to run from a horde. I want to feel like an unprepared regular joe going to his office job, when the outbreak happens, and then the gameplay is just trying to just survive an onslaught of violence as the everyday world around you begins to fall apart. I want to see that chaos and terror occur in the environment; packs of zombies take down NPCs, car crashes, crowds running for their lives. That would be an adrenaline rush, I'd love the hell out of a game like that

This guy sure is determined to keep up the negativity surrounding his game. They've done a lot of blaming gamers, reviewers, and press for their game's reception since launch and since it has now sold a very strong 9 million they continue to be very unhappy with our performance. I'm sorry we disappointed you on Days Gone 😝

Yowzers. The mental gymnastics this guy has to do in order to do these public victory laps are becoming beyond pathetic. It's as sad as if the devs who made Duke Nukem were trying to convince the world that it should be considered in the same class as Half-Life.

The game was fine, but everything plays out like someone fell asleep in front of a television on AMC one night in 2012 and woke up the next morning with a brilliant 'idea'.

Keep in mind that this game has perpetually been in a fire sale on the PS Store for $20 or less since shortly after release and you still can't touch Ghosts for much less than $40 today.

Get some humility...

That's a shame, because it was a great IP imo. Would have loved a sequel. I think the game had a couple of unfortunate flaws though. First off it was just too long. Secondly they should have introduced their coolest feature (hordes) earlier in the game. Both flaws are of course way easier to notice in hindsight.

That's one reason I really think they should have got the opportunity to make a sequel. They had a really strong foundation and it was mostly a question of balancing to make it top notch.

The game was probably a 7.5 for me, but by the end of it you could feel the potential a sequel would have. A few tweaks and just a bit more everything and a sequel could be an all time great.
