DayZ creator angry about The War Z

Dean Hall says he is "quite hurt personally" over confusion regarding Hammerpoint Interactive's controversial zombie game.

DayZ creator Dean Hall has spoken out against controversial zombie game The War Z, which features numerous similarities to Hall's game. Writing on Reddit, he explained that the consumer confusion surrounding both games has left him "quite personally hurt."

No Caption Provided

"I am angry about The War Z. I'm very angry," Hall said. "I'm quite hurt personally because anyone can see how similar the words are, and while the average gamer knows the difference individual people don't. I've had family members/close friends mistake the difference and confront me about what they believed was unethical behavior they thought I was making."

Hall further explained that he has bet his livelihood and reputation on DayZ, which is now at stake given the events surrounding The War Z.

"I really don't think anyone can understand just quite how exasperated that can make you feel when you've gambled everything on something, put your whole self and reputation on the line," he said. "So it hasn't made my life very pleasant and I disagree entirely with the conduct and how consumers have been treated."

This is not the first time Hall has spoken his mind about The War Z. In December, Hall said the controversy surrounding The War Z has left him "depressed," noting he contemplated quitting game development altogether because of it.

Controversy surrounding The War Z came to light upon the game's release through Steam in December. Users quickly began reporting numerous issues with The War Z. Further, many players criticized the game and developer Hammerpoint for being misleading and for censoring their comments about issues with the game. The game has since been pulled from Steam.

GameSpot's recent review of The War Z found it to be a "complete disaster."

As for Day Z, Hall and his team are currently working on a standalone version of the zombie game to be published by Bohemia Interactive in 2013 for PC.

@Meteor7 @klitfelt I agree that it does become stale quite quickly, but I never stop playing just for those mental very intense moments! Thats what makes DayZ, the suspense then the pure carnage

@UltimateBastard @klitfelt This has nothing to do with difficulty as it is just sheer boredom of the game. I can probably guess if I throw a name of a game that I like out here that someone will trash it because they didn't like it. Plus, don't be dissin Barbie Bike Stylin Ride brosause it is a pimpin experience yo.

@klitfelt You have failed with your comment. Day Z have big potential and its quality will only improve with time. Also Day Z have started a new era for this kind of online surviving game.

I remember when War Z was first being talked about over on IGN, they said War Z was going to be based on the "World War Z" book. That's what got me interested in the game in the first place. It was only recently that I learned War Z actually has NOTHING to do with World War Z!

What are you guys talking about people being too dumb to research the game. I thought WarZ was an expansion or sequel to DayZ (I havent played either). He should be able to sue over th name. What a dumbass copying him making the z CAPTIAL.

I don't know about quitting video game design over this, but I understand resentment of WarZ. It looks like pure money grabbing garbage and it is unfortunate that people cannot read a name of a game before they buy it. DayZ and WarZ have the same amount of letters but D and W are nowhere near the same. haha. People get dumber by the second.

@boixwunder It's not that people can't see that the titles are different. But people may presume that one is a sequel or expansion of the other. Thus the confusion.

Why are people so stupid they cannot do some research before they spend their money? Seriously have been perplexed how little people think before they act, getting swept into scams on the internet or through their emails, being persuaded by flashy commercials or people with big mouths and a microphone. Please people, before you do anything make sure its the right thing to do!! Do the homework and do the research before you commit to anything,

@Lord_Python1049 how were people suppose to look into the game if the games web site it self looked like it was a real deal. with what you just said can go for every single game teased no matter indie or AAA.

lol he's "depressed" and contemplated quitting because something successful got copied. Sounds like a bit of pearl-clutching going on here. Try to aim for the fainting couch Rocket, if you get too woozy. I mean, it's not like even yet-to-be-released books/films/games/whatever have been blatantly copied before. No, that's never happened. Ever.

@gilalizard I don't think you read the article carefully mate. He talking about how people mistook the terrible, controversial ripoff to be his, hurting his reputation and leading people he knows to have confronted him about it.

Also he's hurt that someone is openly stealing customers from him, from the game's similar names.

He's also pissed that the game is basically a scam as well.

If everyone wasn't so obsessed with zombie/survival games this game wouldn't have half the attention it does. I don't think it was hard for people to find out this thing was a cash grab, let's move on to and talk about other things finally...

Oh god, after watching some of the above video I saw that WarZ completely copied the attachment system of Crysis. Same angle of the gun being held, same layout of what you can choose, just a complete theft. It's disgusting that these guys could even make this game without a single original idea.

@sam628 not really, he already made same mistake with Big Rigs which is another terrible scam game. I personally don't think the War Z as a mistake but the scam to generate more money by releasing another unfinished game again like Big Rigs. Whenever this Sergey person is involved as producer or director on something, we should never ever buy his game all together.

Dean Hall has every right to be bummed about all the controversy surrounding these two games. I haven't played either and while neither looks particularly GOOD, WarZ looks particularly TERRIBLE. I've followed both for a few months now and at the very least DayZ has some leeway for being a mod. If the the standalone version of DayZ turns out to be some good stuff, I'll be happy to buy it (being an avid zombie survival-horror fan). I'd be depressed too if one of the makers of Big Rigs decided to copy my mod and make it awful. He should stay in the business and continue to bring his ideas to light; that's exactly what the industry needs. None of us blame you, Dean. We blame the fucks making WarZ that are just trying to make a quick buck via micro transactions.

I can completly understand him being upset. It's an outrage for someone to be accused of unethical practices by his close friends and family just because of some low quality ripoff. No one deserves that indignity.

I'm assuming based on this article and the comments that the two games are not actually related as I had assumed before. But for the uninitiated, that could have been made clearer in the article.

@dkdk999 It's not such a big deal getting two games mixed up, especially when they have such similar names. It's when people confuse a game that, by his own words, he poured his heart into with a game that's a blatant ripoff; and a terrible one at that. It's like someone copying your test answers and getting a better grade than you, and then everyone says you copied THEM.

I understand how he feels. I've been a fan of ARMA since the first release, and a fan of Bohemia even longer. But I knew as soon as I heard some developer was making a WarZ game it was going to fail. However grim things look for WarZ, I know for a fact when Bohemia releases Arma 3 and DayZ standalone people are going to be asking 'What is WarZ?'

@vishisluv7 Nothing wrong with the game you just described (aside from the long respawn timer), it's called EvE Online and is one of the most successful (and highest quality) MMOs to come out ever. The problem is, that game is balanced and launched complete and stable.

I can totally feel where he's coming from and I feel bad for him. Now this dude has to fight for the respect of the work he's put into doing DayZ, all b/c these asshats at Hammerfront have completely took a dump on screwing over gamers w/ the scam that is The War Z.

It's good that he's being more blunt w/ how he really feels. But it's a damn shame this guy has to fight so hard now to defend the difference in his work and the shit that is The War Z. I'm sure it's infuriating that he's got to constantly not only explain to consumers that don't understand the difference, but even having to defend his work and explain the difference to his friends and family.

@blaze_craze I'm not entirely sure on details but I do know that Hammerpoint released WarZ claiming it was a finished product when, from what I heard from customers, it was easily still in Alpha with everything wrong. So they lied to everyone and have ignored for the most part the community... or what's left of it.

@MoreThot @blaze_craze not to mention all the stuff you could buy through micro-transaction which if you got killed (happens a lot since there are a lot of camper and the respawn is ridiculous) what you just put real money on for the game, will be gone, which was something that they didnt touch on.

Re-posted from earlier.

Since people will inevitably not bother to read the actual article, I'll explain it.

Hall isn't mad that WarZ copied DayZ. He's stated multiple times that competition is good. What he's mad about is that the name and concept is so similar to DayZ that people confuse the two games, causing him to get a lot of undeserved backlash, even from his own family.

@Colekern To quote the article "I am angry about The War Z. I'm very angry". Thats pretty clear to me.

It does also mention the fact that he also feels his erm idea? was linked to their erm idea? and their removal from Steam has undermined his potential IP. Thats just added to get the two IP's linked deliberately, because any publicity is good publicity EVEN when you steal that publicity from your competitors, The War Z's, misfortune and bad business practice.
