DC's Harley Quinn Spin-off Will Be "An R-Rated Girl Gang Film," Says Margot Robbie

"I wasn't seeing enough girl gangs on screen."

Despite the negative critical reaction to 2016's Suicide Squad, most fans and critics agreed that Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn was one of the best characters in the DC universe so far. There have been numerous rumors about what movie we'll see the character in next, but last month it was reported that the spin-off focusing on the all-female Birds of Prey team was moving forward. Now Robbie has revealed more details about the project.

In an interview with Collider, Robbie stated that it was important for Harley to stay part of a group. "I pitched the idea of an R-rated girl gang film including Harley, because I was like, 'Harley needs friends,'" she said. "Harley loves interacting with people, so don't ever make her do a standalone film. She's got to be with other people, it should be a girl gang. I wasn't seeing enough girl gangs on screen, especially in the action space. So that was always a big part of it."

Now Playing: Suicide Squad - Who is Harley Quinn?

The Birds of Prey movie will be directed by Cathy Yan, who will be the second woman to direct a DC film, after Wonder Woman's Patty Jenkins, as well as the first female Asian director to tackle a big-budget superhero movie. Robbie herself requested that the director be a woman, and explained how important it was to give "a female director the chance to do big budget stuff."

She continued: "They always get, 'Here's the tiny little film.' I was like, 'I love action. I love action films. I'm a girl. What, are we meant to only like a specific thing?' So it was a hugely important to find a female director for this, if possible. But at the end of the day--male, female--the best director gets the job and Cathy was the best director."

The Birds of Prey film does not yet have a release date, but it is believe that it has moved ahead of Suicide Squad 2 on DC's schedule. Last month, Variety reported that Suicide Squad 2 will no longer start production in 2018 as originally planned, and that the Birds of Prey movie will instead head before cameras in late 2018 or early 2019.

In related news, last week DC announced that there was also an animated Harley Quinn show in the works. It will form part of the studio's new streaming service DC Universe, which launches later this year. As well as the Harley Quinn show, there will also be an animated Young Justice series, plus live-action Titans and Swamp Thing shows.

"But at the end of the day--male, female--the best director gets the job and Cathy was the best director" but Robbie requested that they hire a female director.

These are contradictory. If you want to exclude males from your hiring short list, just be up front about it. If you want the best director to get the job, regardless of gender, then don't go into the hiring process looking for a specific gender. Either way, just own it.

@lionheartssj1: This sentence previous to the one you quoted, shows that she didn't contradict herself: 'So it was a hugely important to find a female director for this, if possible.'

@pointingmonkey: I guess what I meant to say is the mindsets are contradictory, not explicitly the wordage. Granted, I'm just going off what I'm reading in this article, so admittedly I'm just hung up on semantics.

Her intent is that they hire a female director as she went so far as to approach DC and "explained how important it was to give "a female director the chance to do big budget stuff." " The goal of the hiring process is explicitly stated to be we want a female director. The comments about if possible, or at the end of the day run contrary to the stated goal. In the one statement, being female precedes being a good director, in the other, being a good director precedes their gender.

Personally, it doesn't matter who directs it (except maybe Snyder). Patty did great on WW, I thought. No doubt a similar situation can happen here. I just wanted to point out that Robbie is speaking out both sides of her mouth. If gender ultimately doesn't matter, don't lobby for the hire to be predicated on it. If it does, just say, we want a female director for this movie.

I've always figured that the announced "Birds of Prey" movie and the "Gotham City Sirens" movie (Harley, Poison Ivy and Catwoman) were the same movie.

Hell, "Birds of Prey," "Gotham City Sirens" and "Batgirl: The Movie" could ALL be the same one film.

@jumpaction: If this movie is going to be R-rated, then Batwoman would be a better fit. You could do Oracle, but not Batgirl.

@wicked_laugh: That could be an option, although isn't a Batgirl movie already in the works? It's being written by Christina Hodson.

@jumpaction: Really? I never thought Batgirl was standout enough to have her own movie. IMO it'd make more sense to have her play a co-role in the upcoming Nightwing movie and as Oracle in any other Batman related movies.

@wicked_laugh: It's hard to predict exactly who will shine these days as far as superhero movies are concerned. I never would have believed characters like Ant Man and The Black Panther would become as popular in the film world as Spiderman and Batman but that's what we are looking at.

I think this has allowed smaller heroes the freedom to shine among the larger heroes.

@jumpaction: I'd prefer seeing someone like Nathalie Emanuel as Batgirl...its the first name that popped into my head when the batgirl movie was circulating

@moviegab: I admit, I've not seen any of her work before but it would be interesting to see.

I'm also thinking of actors who could work alongside J.K. Simmons' Commissioner Gordon.

@ThePlantain: That's understandable, but personally I'd like to see it. :)

I think she would make for a very relatable Barbara Gordon. There are so many good options for that character though. I bet they'll find a good match whoever they go with.

@jumpaction: Depends how silly they want to make it... That would cross the line into 100% over-the-top comedy, and don't forget that she's like 5'2". They need someone more physical, still able to do drama AND comedy, yet with that slice of femme fatale to draw the male audience w/o them putting up a fight (like Robbie herself).

Take a look at Alexandra Daddario, known for True Detective S1, lots of TV, and multiple upcoming R-rated girl-comedies. ...and she's a redhead, like Barbara/Batgirl should be.

@Pyrosa: I understand Kendrick has an association with comedy but it's not entirely accurate to suggest she hasn't taken on dramatic roles. In fact, her most lauded roles such as 50/50 and (Oscar Nominated) Up in the Air position her in a more dramatic role than comedy. It's closer to suggest her more popular roles are comedy, but it's not a genre she is entirely synonymous with in her filmography.

However, you are right about the physicality. It's one thing that she would make a convincing Barbara Gordon, depending of course on the iteration of the character they use. For example New 52 Batgirl is a high school student. It really depends on physical training.

That being said, I don't think she will actually play the role. I'd just like to see it, personally.
