But Dead Island 2 is still nowhere to be seen.

Deep Silver is promising higher quality textures, a "photorealistic" lighting system, physically based shading, image quality enhancements by way of anti-aliasing, improved game models and geometry assets, HBAO and other motion blur effects, and updated game UI. Additionally, the PS4 version makes uses of Remote Play and shareplay, as well as streaming and recording. All versions also have four-player online co-op.

Deep Silver also confirmed that the Power Firsts Power-Up mod will be available in both Dead Island and Riptide.

As for Retro Revenge, here is a quick rundown (courtesy of Deep Silver):

  • Retro look meets melee-based combat
  • Featuring leaderboards, achievements and plenty of depth
  • Game mechanics include power-ups, super attacks and a combo system

Finally, Deep Silver confirmed that the Definitive Collection will sell for $40. You can also buy each game's definitive edition individually for $20, but you won't get Retro Revenge. Deep Silver did not say if it plans to offer Retro Revenge as a standalone game outside of the Definitive Collection.

The original story is below.

It looks like Deep Silver is planning to re-release Dead Island and Dead Island Riptide on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in a package that also includes a brand new standalone 16-bit game called Retro Revenge.

This information comes from retailer Best Buy, which has posted product pages for an unannounced Dead Island Definitive Collection for the new consoles (via Gematsu). According to the listings, it comes with the Dead Island Definitive Edition, Dead Island: Riptide Definitive Edition, and Dead Island: Retro Revenge.

The two definitive editions are "fully remastered" versions of the original last-generation games, complete with all DLC and patches, according to the listings.

As for Retro Revenge, here's how it's described: "A brand new standalone 16-bit game set in the style of a classic side-scrolling action/endless runner within the Dead Island universe."

Retro Revenge was first revealed earlier this year through a ratings board filing.

The release date for the Definitive Collection is listed as May 31 and the price is $40. We have contacted Deep Silver in an attempt to get more details, though this certainly sounds like the real deal.

Dead Island 2 was supposed to launch in 2015, but was later delayed to 2016. The zombie-killing game lost its developer, and we've still not heard which studio would be taking over for it. Dying Light producer Tymon Smektala has said in the past that he would love it if Techland returned to the series and got involved in the development of Dead Island 2. Techland was the developer of the original Dead Island.

The first Dead Island was released in 2011 with Riptide coming in 2013.

They were not exactly brilliant games (Specially Riptide) and with Dying Light out there I see no reason to get this one.
When the price is low, I guess
Sigh... more remasters...

Just so we know where we're at:

- Techland and Deep silver parted ways after dead island due to creative differences.

-Techland then go on to make Dying Light, a game better in virtually every way.

-Deep silver teams up with Yager for Dead island 2

-Deep Silver and Yager part ways due to creative differences

-Development on Dead Island 2 goes quiet

-Dead Island definitive edition then anounced

Yeah i'm staying clear of Deep silver...

Ah yes, Dead Island, the Marmite of video games.

Personally I wouldn't mind another jar of it. Dead Island's RPG aspects and combat were a lot more satisfying than Dying Light's. Dying Light spent most of its time having you avoid combat and every character was just the same dude with no real variation of build after a point.

Either way, the question does still remain: Who do you voodoo?

@Xylymphydyte: "Dead Island's RPG aspects and combat were a lot more satisfying than Dying Light's. Dying Light spent most of its time having you avoid combat"

That was totally intentional. The first tried to have RPG elements, while the second was more focused in a survival feeling.
Although I have to disagree with avoiding combat in DL; once you level up skills enough you are ready for combat (in a quite interesting escalating way)

@raveneye: That's probably fair. I do prefer more RPG elements to fewer. The main reason I found it less satisfying in Dying Light was that there was no real choice, you basically filled out every skill as it became available. Maybe you went with the 1hd skills before 2hd but that was about it.

I do have a maxed character, sans legend points which I'm not finding very compelling, and honestly, the higher level I got the less I wanted to fight stuff. They didn't drop anything compelling and there were so many ways to just bypass them between the climbing, camo, etc.. Zombies were basically completely trivialized by the parkour. Dead Island forced you to face stuff straight up and in very varied ways depending on what character you were playing, to take advantage of their unique bonuses and abilities.

I never thought I would be making this kind of complaint, but it sucks that they won't revisit the PC version with these improvements. The only advantage it has over the original console versions is higher resolution and frame rate which doesn't help that much given these textures.

Then there's provably no need for PC to get this one, imo.

@Kunakai: ?
I don't think it is. PC already has a potential higher resolution and FPS, and those the improvements he (and I) meant.

@raveneye: Thanks for the correction. You're still confused though. He's saying the improvements from the new version would be nice for PC. Your statements don't make sense given the context of his.

As much fun as I had with Dead Island back when it came out, it'll be hard to go back to it after playing Dying Light. That game improved on Dead Island in every way and then added parkour movement.

@undeadzombie: You seem to be under the impression that I'm somehow upset by your original comment, I'm not. My question was more directed to you on how you even found this article considering it's three years old. If replying to three year comments is your thing, you do you, man.

FYI, insulting people on the internet makes you 0% more intimidating and you come off as a keyboard warrior more than anything. Just thought I'd inform you of that since you're not aware of it. Cheers.

Remaster? Around the 22 second mark, note the guy opening the door. Completely mismatched skin tones. This was one of the last "nobody has it in stock" games I can recall, but in hind sight there was a reason for that. Tried co-op and had the delightful experience of "What are you fighting?" -This zombie right in front of us! "There's nothing there..."

Hard pass.

It's better to buy a remastered re-release than to spend hours yapping online about the how great backwards compatibility is on games one doesn't even own.

Look, I had a blast stomping zombie skulls for MANY hours w/my friends in both games, but you fckers robbed us of our 100% completion achievements BOTH times (and many, many, MANY other brutally serious bugs throughout). That pattern didn't change with Dying Light, either -- viciously buggy game had to be put down for 6 months while you patched it.

So "thanks but no thanks" on reliving all that bugginess again. I'm not giving you guys any more money for awhile.

This is good news to me as I used to play this with my friend on PS3, but then after he got PS4 he rarely ever touched his PS3 and we stopped playing together. Now, he'll have a reason to return. Looking forward to playing again!

These games aren't that old and honestly, aren't that great. These weren't some high level cult classic or genre defining games. A 40$ price point isn't too bad though I suppose. Whatever...

@walidras: Guessing you didn't finish either of them if you think they weren't complete. They were both VERY long games. Not to mention if you did the side quests you could bump up to about 60 hours play time each.
