Dead or Alive 5 set for 2012

Team Ninja confirms next installment in Dead or Alive franchise headed to Xbox 360 and PS3 next year, releases more details about Ninja Gaiden 3.

TOKYO--Team Ninja is best known for its Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive franchises, two properties that the Tecmo Koei-owned development studio has strongly supported over the years.

It has been nearly six years since Dead or Alive 4 (pictured) debuted in the Xbox 360 launch window.
It has been nearly six years since Dead or Alive 4 (pictured) debuted in the Xbox 360 launch window.

During its pre-Tokyo Game Show event in Tokyo today, Team Ninja announced the continuation of the Dead or Alive franchise with Dead or Alive 5. The developer showed off a brief pre-alpha version of the game and revealed it will ship in 2012 on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

During the presentation, Team Ninja also revealed more details about Ninja Gaiden 3, showing off a new trailer focusing on the "three strokes" concept first revealed at E3 this year. While the first stroke is known to represent the katana, the second stroke, revealed at tonight's event, represents consequence. The trailer detailed protagonist Ryu Hayabusa's struggle putting aside his own agenda to carry out an assignment.

The developer also showed a Ninja Gaiden 3 demo focused on the new gameplay system designed to accommodate both experienced players and those not familiar with the past Ninja Gaiden games. The system features two playing styles: ninja, which focuses on action gameplay, and hero, which focuses on story and supports auto-guard and auto-evade. The demo focused on the Ninja style and followed Hayabusa through a number of gory encounters on the streets of London (and included some particularly bloody finishing moves).

Team Ninja also revealed that Ninja Gaiden 3 will not use the same kind of dismemberment system the past games have used because the developers wanted players to feel what it's like to "cut someone down." Team Ninja didn't shy away from making the game violent because it wanted players to feel the consequence of their actions.

The concept for the online part of the game is "a world of ninjas," with an eight-player multiplayer mode that will see players challenge other ninjas in the world to become number one.

Ninja Gaiden 3 will be released in early 2012 and will feature PlayStation Move support. First unveiled at TGS 2010, Ninja Gaiden 3 will feature close-combat fighting, online multiplayer, and both cooperative and multiplayer experiences. For more on the title, check out GameSpot's most recent preview of Ninja Gaiden 3.

@SD But the game still looks great without Itagaki? I don't get why people say this game won't be great because he's not with tecmo anymore...

I've said this many times but no Itagaki, there is no hope for this game to be any good. I'll back my claim with Metroid Other M and Dead, Alive Paradise as examples and soon to be horrible Ninja Gaiden 3.

Looks like Dead or Alive vs Soul Calibur coming up in 2012.I think the Dreamcast versions of both of these are still the best and if I had to pick a franchise I would go with Soul Calibur. I still play the Dreamcast versions, which still perform better than most current gen fighters.

Dead or Alive 5 looks good so far can't wait to play it! It's a shame though they took out the dismemberment system of the previous Ninja Gaiden but hey what can you do? Still looks good!

@XeonForce Don't know him but... um.. doesn't he have a reputation? Even if we're just using "his" games as proof? Also, I would suppose Tecmo feels they have a responsibility to fans not to mess with the formula. Right? So it will be more of the same. Lastly, Tecmo could be described in many ways, but spontaneous is not a word I'd use. As a company, don't they play it safe? Quantum Theory, anyone? That's the company's latest new IP. Hardly out-of-the-box thinking. I'd go a step further. I'd say the last time Tecmo got creative was the original Tecmo Bowl. I'm talking 1987.

I'm not really that interested..... I love the girls in the game and I like some of what DOA has to offer but honestly the last couple DOA games kinda sucked. I'm also not going for the next Ninja Gaiden....I was more a fan of the originals on NES [yes I am aware that the true original was in arcades.....]

@PixelAddict Than why did you mention Itagaki in the first place? The fact of the matter is that you did know he left Team Ninja. Your back tracking and you said nothing about an heir. So in essence you are wrong. I suggest you research next time you make a statement.

If Ninja Gaiden 3 is released simultaneously on PS3 and 360, does that mean there will be no enhanced versions later on down the road (ala Sigma)? Or will it simply be a case of Ninja Gaiden Black? Also, it's nice to see DOA again, after the last few "games". Took them a while to get around to the fifth one. The last numbered game was a 360 launch title, wasn't it?

@TheTrueMagusX1 I know this. Everyone knows this. However if you think Itagaki's creative heir is going to change anything... well then that would be naive, wouldn't it?

I hate what their doing with Ninja Gaiden 3, they said earlier that it would not have the same amount of weapons Sigma 2 did which is extremely dissapointing as that is one of my favorite things about Sigma 2.

@Shadow_Fire41 I simply think it's not all that important and when people do state it like your original post (which did actually sound like you had a beef and was targeting the audience of the game as fetishists just for liking it) then yes it does seem like you have an issue and I need to point out that during the game no matter how much you focus and no matter how big a deal you make there is nothing more than a panty shot / cleavage to be seen. This being less than in some movies as plenty of 15 rated movies even have erotic scenes with bare bodies (although not showing it all) so I really think it's just overblown. I'm not making a big argument about it just wanting to state I think there's no reason the titillation should be focused on and maybe your initial post gave the wrong impression because you chose to focus on it too much (entirely actually).

@Sigil-otaku I'm not the only one who finds the "roster" distracting. From the review on this very site: "It would have been nice if DOA4's roster included a couple more fighters who...well, actually looked like fighters, rather than the outlandishly dressed, dollfaced young ladies that dominate the lineup" There were other comments as to the... aspects... that distract from an otherwise solid fighting game. I've got no beef with the game. I just find the distractions... unnecessary. You know?

@PixelAddict No, you don't get the series because you don't really understand the need for a less rigid fighting game. The more rigid, the worse in my general opinion (general, not always) and DOA remains the most fluid and one of the fastest fighters around. I like that and find the games very entertaining for that, you focusing on the boobs yourself only shows what YOUR intentions are and not other gamers. Yes there is a volleyball game but yes that is a separate game so it doesn't change the fighting games core qualities in any way. At best you get a bit of booby jiggle that you can easily ignore in the fighting games as it's hardly a porn fest and 18 rated game so don't kid yourself. Minor titillation? Yes, anything worth ignoring the game for?? You'd have to really hate boobs to say yes to that one.

@NeonNinja Gotta wonder about a guy like Itagaki, who has such fondness for boob physics. I mean, I'm as appreciative as the next guy, but Itagaki had to spend many days-worth of hours overseeing the "boob quality control" of his DOA titles, Xtreme or otherwise. I love me a good fighter, though, and I have hopes for it. Just as I have hopes for the next Soulcalibur... as long as they can make Ivy a little less TA and a little more BA.
