Dead Space Doesn't Need A Remake, But Here's How It Could Benefit From One

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

While Dead Space is still intense and scary as hell, there's a lot a remake could add to the game that would revitalize a phenomenal franchise.

Few games hold up as well as Dead Space. Despite releasing 13 years ago, Visceral Games' space horror shooter is still as intense and scary today as it was then. In fact, it's shockingly good--you can get it on PC right now, and it still controls exceedingly well, features some great shooting mechanics, and looks pretty great.

But most importantly, Dead Space can still scare the hell out of you, with a combination of great sound design, excellent jump scares, ridiculously gross monsters, and awesome set-piece moments.

Now Playing: Does Dead Space Need a Remake?

So that's what makes the announcement of a Dead Space remake from EA Motive kind of...weird. According to leaks ahead of EA Play 2021, Electronic Arts looked at the massive success of Capcom's Resident Evil 2 remake and thought that Dead Space was ripe for a similar treatment. But Resident Evil 2 on the original PlayStation is today, realistically, kind of ugly and clunky. It's a tough game to go back to in its original form despite being full of great ideas and frightening moments. It's the kind of game where a visual and mechanical overhaul helps bring its best ideas forward into a modern setting.

Meanwhile, Dead Space might be getting on in years, but the technical leaps from the seventh generation of consoles to now aren't nearly as drastic as those from the PlayStation 1 era. Games from 12 years ago play pretty much the same way as they did then, and they still look pretty damn good. As a huge Dead Space fan, I've been itching for that franchise to be reinvigorated in some way (although without Visceral behind it [RIP], will it even be the same?), but a remake seems like an unnecessary expenditure of resources for an already great game.

The more I think about it, though, the more I think it's possible for a remake of Dead Space to do wonders for the phenomenal and distinct franchise. There are a ton of great ideas that don't need changing in Dead Space, and while a graphical overhaul would be nice, it's definitely not essential. But there's a whole lot of room for a remade Dead Space to expand itself and revive the whole franchise like yet another unkillable necromorph: through story.

When it was released, Dead Space came at a time when games were starting to really lean into doing some smart things with narrative but didn't quite have the resources or graphical power to put that narrative on screen. The result was (and is) a heavy reliance on audio logs. Dead Space has characters who show up in certain places to talk with the player character, Isaac Clark, and they'll call out on the radio to discuss objectives or pressing situations. But really, like BioShock and countless others from the era, Dead Space is a game when you arrive after the disaster--and the only way to learn about it is by finding tidbits left behind by the people who are already dead.

No Caption Provided

That setup is kind of fundamental to Dead Space, and I'm not advocating for a change to it (although, as Dead Space 2 showed, being caught in the middle of a disastrous outbreak of undead monsters is just as frightening as arriving in its aftermath). But there's a lot that could be done to tweak Dead Space's story and worldbuilding to make them more clear and immediate, to pull players in deeper, and ultimately make future Dead Space titles more viable.

The story of the USG Ishimura, where Dead Space takes place, is one tied to the planet Aegis VII. A mining colony, the people on the planet discovered an alien artifact called a Marker, which first started working on the colonists' minds to make them hallucinate and go mad, eventually turning them into a bunch of mutated undead necromorph monsters.

You learn tidbits of this story from audio logs all over the Ishimura--how it arrived at Aegis VII just before the disaster, how it brought the Marker on board, and how it ultimately succumbed to madness and monsters of its own. But most of that story has to be imagined and parsed by the player, and we never see it play out during the game.

But Dead Space has a bunch of additional materials that fill in the gaps in what happened during that first game and could absolutely expand on what's in a Dead Space remake. There's a motion comic that was released beside the game that tells the tale of the outbreak on Aegis VII, and an animated movie, Dead Space: Downfall, that shows what happened aboard the Ishimura before your arrival. If you were a Dead Space player but not a die-hard fan, you've probably never seen all this extra material--to say nothing of the other comics and novels that tie into the universe.

No Caption Provided

It sounds like EA Motive is already thinking in this direction, which is great news. In an interview with IGN, senior producer Philippe Ducharme and creative director Roman Campos-Oriola mentioned they're looking at the rest of the Dead Space universe to add more to the story of the remake.

“For us, the foundation is the Dead Space 1 story. So, by default, that's what is canon. But then there are some improvements that we want to make to that story,” Campos-Oriola said in the interview. “And not necessarily improvements because those things were not really working in the original, more improvements because of what came after, and we're like, ‘Aw man, that's interesting if we could reference that, or if we could make a link to that.” Campos-Oriola also said he and the team "were looking at everything from what immediately happened in Dead Space 2 to ancillary media like animated films and more," IGN reported.

“We're doing it from a narrative standpoint, but we're also looking at it from a feature standpoint in the improvements and some of the content that evolved throughout the franchise,” Ducharme told IGN. "So we're looking at what can be taken and reinjected within the first game from a future standpoint."

So with advances in gaming tech over the last decade, plus a whole lot of ancillary story material that already exists, there's no reason Dead Space has to relegate itself to being a story mostly told in audio logs and text messages. In fact, there's no reason Dead Space has to stick with only the story of what happens in the existing game at all. Dead Space is actually a huge, interesting world, with a lot of moving political parts as relates to corporations, governments, militaries, and religions. They're all essential to the story Visceral tells in this first game and in the subsequent games. Dead Space is already a really rich world with a lot of extra story material. And this is a perfect opportunity to get that stuff shown on screen rather than just piped through speakers or headphones.

I still love Dead Space as it was released in 2008, but if Electronic Arts wants a horror remake on par with Resident Evil 2, it has to take some serious notes from that game as well. RE2 isn't just a spiffed-up version of an old game--it's a reimagined version, with changes both subtle and expansive, to make it a better game in many respects. A lot less work needs to be done on Dead Space's mechanics and visuals than was necessary for RE2. But when it comes to story, there's a vast amount of interesting, disgusting, frightening stuff into which a new Dead Space could tap. EA can learn something from the haunting demands of the Marker: unify the story, expand the world, and make Dead Space whole.

can someone help me understand the difference between REMAKE and REBOOT? From my understanding and correct me if I'm wrong please. but is a remake something that keeps certain elements, stories, and charcaters from the first game and put them in the remake with a slightly different story but somewhat the same (devil may cry and DMC)? Vs a reboot changing certain things we know about the first game and changing the story to a degree that doesnt have anything to do with the first game or sequels? So with that being said why is god of war (2018) considered a reboot when it has lore and nods from the previous games

@dro88: "Reboot" applies more often to films. A reboot hits the reset button and retells the story - this almost always applies to a franchise, and there will be dramatic differences in story. Casino Royale is a reboot, as was XMen First Class (until the retconned it into an alt-timeline scenario with the sequel). The Departed is a remake of a Hong Kong film called Infernal Affairs. It applies when someone wants to tell a story again. Usually it was precious told by someone else and the changes to the story aren't too dramatic. If you meant remaster, a remaster usually involves the same code, with graphical upgrades usually being the bulk of the changes. A remake of a video game is a ground-up remaining- you shouldn't expect to play through the same levels and fight the same enemies

@dro88: remake is something in which adds more stuff like story or more to the enviroment. Take re1 on the ps1 example, the graveyard was cut, when you get all crests you get to the court yard, in the remake they added the woods where it takes you to the cabin where you see Lisa trevor for the first time. Lisa mother's grave was added in the remake and so on, check on youtube for comparison

Remaster however is just a simple trick where devs edit the files to make the game more enhanced. Easiest explanasion is they edit ini files from a ps3 to ps4 game, 720p to 1080p and add more. But a remaster can also make the game more bad or worse just depends on optimization... Im lookin at you Return to Arkham.

@dro88: He's actually wrong. A Remake is literally any game that is remade. It doesn't have to add new anything. It just has to be an existing game that is remade. It could be a retro game and still count as a remake.

Where the definition diverges is whether or not the game is also a reimagining, a faithful remake, a spiritual remake, etc. Simply saying "remake" is not enough. That's like me telling you your ice cream is "ice cream". Simply knowing it's ice cream is not enough. You want to know the flavour.

Reboots are another thing entirely. The goal of a reboot is to potentially modernize an existing game. This can be a remake with just a few new systems, like taking the exact same story and characters, but changing the genre; but it can also be a brand new game entirely with the same title. Usually when the term "reboot" is used, you should expect a different game entirely.

@dro88: Sure

DmC = Reboot
Same characters and themes, but in a wildly re-structured format.
For instance, they changed the world, the supporting cast (Kat), and made it so Dante/Vergil were sons of a Demon + Angel (Which is not what a Nephilim is at all, but that's another topic) instead of a Demon + Human hybrid.

Resident Evil 2 = Remake
Same characters, same locations, same story, same pretty much everything.
Sure some minor elements are remixed, but it's essentially the same game built from scratch with modern tools & tropes.

As for "God of War", this is a great example of the creators/marketing themselves not understanding the terms. This would be what's called a "spiritual reboot" (I don't make up these terms) Canonically it's a direct sequel to what came before, but mechanically it's incredibly distinct and different from it's predecessors as well.

If you really wanna get crazy, there's also the "Soft-reboot". You see this crap with DC comics every few years for the last 2 decades - typically because The Flash messes up the timeline and random things you thought you knew are just changed (It's impossible to follow, don't try). Another good example is the X-Men films.... Trying to wrap your mind around how the latest Dark Phoenix and everything back to X-Men #1 are in the exact same continuity is mind-boggling.

There are outliers too.
"Technically" speaking, Crash N.Sane Trilogy is a Remake, and not a Remaster. You'd want to call it a remaster, because it's the exact same game, modernized with no real changes past QOL updates... except it's not. They rebuilt the entire originally trilogy from scratch in a brand new engine with brand new assets... which, technically, is a remake.

Whereas a remaster technically uses the original game and literally updates it's files and code to run on modern devices.

ISNT THIS SO MUCH FUN

I enjoyed all the Dead Space games, but the fact that you needed a Co-Op player to play an extra mission was really lame, and a slap in the face to all Dead Space fans. That really pissed me off. I almost didn't even want to buy the game because of it.

I can think of very few things that Dead Space need to improve. Reload animations come to my mind now. And that's that.

And about storytelling? Yeah, you better not make the mistake of craming a lot of classic format cutscenes. Dead Space 1 was immersive because it just barely used them, keeping the sense of urgency intact.

Just do 4.

It needs a 4, or a spin-off that doesn't deal with Issac.

And Issac needs a more likable personal life. Since that whole love story crap with a damn near 50-year-old man, and a not even in her 30s-year-old woman. Was kind of gross.

@illegal_peanut: They don't need Isaac, better kill him off or let him retire never to be heard from while they can. Isaac never was super interesting, but that's a good thing since Dead Space is a horror game where death to everyone is just around corner.

Resident Evil will never get away with killing Chris or Jill or Leon. Dead Space's Isaac is very close to that Jack Bauer status. If one guy survives everything then at some point he will just be a badass/superhero who everyone looks up to as a savior. Or then it's just a trope of the same guy always getting in trouble while saying "Oh, here we go agaiiiiin!"

There was nothing wrong with Dead Space, it was a wildly inventive and beautifully crafted game. I mean yeah it could have used a bigger budget to flesh out its world but for a early 7th gen game..... pretty damn good. Sadly EA.....................................

I mean EA's accountants, just kept messing with its formula. Co-op, online, run and gun, silly set pieces, and more took the isolation, horror, and coolness right out of it. A game that never needed, nor did any of its fans ask for online components. But that is EA, at that time.

Should there be another DS... with a young and hungry team taking it back to its roots, yeah.

Here are the two things I think the game needs:

-Improve the zero G and artillery gun controls during that horrid meteor segment.

-Greatly expand on the concepts of the suits. This is the thing I was waiting for and hoping would eventually come in the sequels. You can improve the guns and your powers, but the suits were pretty much restricted to basic health ups and not much else. Sometimes they would have unique properties, usually the DLC ones.

So why not make it so the suits can be modded, improved, and level up? And each suit has a unique trait such as one that turns the plasma cutter into an actual sword and is built for melee or a suit built for tanking or one built for shooting. All sorts of builds. And you can enhance them in all sorts of ways. Seemed like an obvious way to take the game forward (rather than greatly expanding on weapon modding; suits are cool, but when you really run away with weapon power the horror aspect quickly diminishes).

@Barighm: Holy sh1tballs, can we not give Dead Space to this guy for development, this is the sequel I want to play!

With sequels you kind of lose the mystery of horror games, which is why they should be more vulnerable, it is scarier. But when your carrying a chaingun + forcegun combo, wtf does it matter. With modding armor you are just trying to adapt and survive.

Whatever they ultimately choose to do, as long as they do SOMETHING good with Dead Space, thats what I care about. Whether that be a reboot, a remaster, a remake, or a spinoff. Just give us SOMETHING quality that made Dead Space such a great game.

@RELeon: It's EA. They won't. Heck, they never really got around to fixing the PC port of the game. I'd be much happier if they did a remaster and fixed all of the outstanding issues rather than trying to change anything. Don't trust EA one bit to make any changes for the better.

@Lach0121:

I can’t remember much of Dead Space 3, but I remember liking some of the sort-of open world aspects. Floating around in space and picking which wreckage to go and explore for loot. The exploring was kind of boring, but I appreciated not being on rails for a little while.

But it’s definitely the first two for me. Even now, even knowing what’s coming, my heart still gets to pounding in my ears. Especially the opening moments of Dead Space 2, running down that awful hallway in a damn straight jacket.

@justthetip: agree on Dead Space 3 being a good game. But some aspects of it diluted the formula, specially the monetization aspects that nullified the scarcity of materials. And game had an overall lack of polish and detail that made it less riveting that the previous ones.

It wasnt just the scare factor of 3.

The atmosphere was lacking

The story hust didnt grab like the first.

The setting they used could of been better imo.

@Barighm: I was thinking I had maybe missed some gameplay along the way. I saw the trailer, (it looks brutal), but I've learned to temper my expectations on games that haven't shown any actual gameplay yet, (I'm looking at you Starfield).

The pedigree is there though, so I'm hoping for the best. 🤞🤞

@Barighm: LOL! Even when you're snarky, you're still so nice. 😄
