Dead Space Remake Announced, Developed By EA Motive

EA's survival horror series returns on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, with the full remake taking us back to the horrifying saga of the USG Ishimura.

After weeks of rumors about a potential revival of the Dead Space series, we've finally learned of what's next for the survival horror franchise, and it is indeed a full remake of the original game. Announced during the EA Play 2021 live stream, the Dead Space remake--releasing on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S--will take us back to the USG Ishimura, focusing on Issac Clarke's harrowing descent into a decaying space station filled with mutated monsters known as necromorphs.

Developed by EA Motive, the same team behind Star Wars: Squadrons and Battlefront II's story campaign, the short teaser showcased the familiar, derelict halls of the ruined spaceship, with a lone necromorph in the distance readying for an attack. The remake is being made with the Frostbite engine, which is the same tech used for the Battlefield and Star Wars Battlefront games. According to the press release, the remake will be offering "improvements to gameplay, while staying true to the original." In the teaser revealed during the show, we saw some callbacks to environmental details from the original game, with the words "Cut off their limbs" written in blood on the station's halls. We also got to see a final tease of the protagonist Issac Clarke, who restores his health at one of the ship's workstations.

Now Playing: Dead Space Remake Teaser Trailer | EA Play Live 2021

In an official press release, EA Motive senior producer Phillippe Ducharme stated that this revisit will modernize the original game for current-generation platforms, with the hope to reinvigorate the series for new and returning players alike.

"The Dead Space franchise made a huge impact on the survival horror genre when it was released 12 years ago, and I came to Motive as a fan first to specifically work on this game," he said. "We have a passionate team at Motive who are approaching this remake as a love letter to the franchise. Going back to the original and having the opportunity to do so on next gen consoles excited everyone on the team. As we look to modernize the game, we've reached out to dedicated fans and invited them to provide us with feedback since the early stages of production to deliver the Dead Space game they want and for new players to enjoy as well."

Though general details about this game are light as of this time, and the EA Play stream ended before we could learn anything else about it, GameSpot has confirmed from the press release and from an EA spokesperson that this will be a full remake of the original game, and not a direct remaster. So while this will still follow what we know of the original 2008 game, there will likely be some new surprises in store for this upcoming iteration. The original Dead Space trilogy was developed by Visceral Games, which was shuttered in 2017 following the cancellation of its Star Wars action-adventure game. So it is exciting to see its work live on in this full remake for current gen platforms, and the creator of Dead Space, Glen Schofield, stated on Twitter that he was excited to see what's to come with the game. It was also revealed that former Visceral Games design director Dino Ignacio has been working with EA Motive as a consultant on the remake.

Why not Bluepoint? They're obviously the go-to team for quality remakes.

@thecupidstunts: Because those crits do, virtually, one to one conversions and Dead Space needs a complete rework from the ground up not to end up being garbage again, Cupid. Bluepoint Games have, in so far as we have known them, not ever done anything of their own.

@asnakeneverdies: Dead Space wasn't garbage, so why exactly would it need a complete rework?

Three wasn't as good, but I'm not sure how you could think that any of the games were garbage.

@bloodbornelore: That would be amazing, but I'm not holding my breath on a Bloodborne remake, (I'd actually rather see a sequel).

@thecupidstunts: I feel absolutely 100% certain that a sequel will happen because 1) it’s Miyazaki’s favourite IP by a long shot and has expressed desire to make a sequel, and 2) Sony CEO called Bloodborne a franchise, which it obviously isn’t… until it actually is. This tells me From will get right onto a Bloodborne sequel as soon as they’re wrapped up with Elden Ring launch content.

Yet another unnecessary remake. Original still holds up fine today and play it yearly every Halloween.

And seeing how EA did "so well" the last time they got their greedy mits on the franchise, maybe they felt they didn't mess up the 3rd entry enough that they have to do the same shit from the beginning and "maybe" this will be more acceptable.

@Bazz3442: I remember when I played DS3 back then, after all the bash the game had I was expecting a piece of shit literally. It turned out to be one of the most memorable gaming experiences I've had. People complain that it got more sci-fi oriented than the other two, yes that's true. But this franchise was never scary to begin with, scary is Amnesia, Layers of Fear, maybe Outlast. You can't get scared when you have an unlimited supply of guns and ammo, fear is something you feel when you are helpless, utterly defenseless in a nightmarish atmosphere. So to me it was an improvement, you can't terrify me but you can still make me jump off my seat and deliver a great story and atmosphere. And the totally did. So I think it was angry fans who ruined Dead Space not EA.

@julittok: There's many who would disagree with you on that "not scary" thing, but I do agree that it wasn't scary but just more creepy with an amazing claustrophobic environment which is what I wanted but once you see EA's name on a franchise before you play, the game screams cash-grab and that's exactly what it felt from start to finish with me.

So rebooting Dead Space is going to be about making money first for before player experience and the franchise (1+2) is about the experience to work so I can't see EA doing anything but create a money spinner with "loot boxes" and the like.

@Bazz3442: I disagree. The original had to make several compromises in it's original vision to make it to market. The biggest and best example is it was supposed to be full co-op, and they scrapped that to keep the graphics up to snuff (interestingly, the exact opposite of what Borderlands did)

IF, and only if, they are doing it to realize that original vision - it will totally be worth it.

@skyhighgam3r: I suppose if your into that kind of thing and have full co-op (I'm not) but this is EA we're talking about. The greediest and underhanded company that I have no doubt will implement this co-op feature but what else might they do?

We have DS3 as an example of how bad EA can be so I'm interested to see how this goes and seeing as I still play the original and completely fine with it, I'm actually hoping this fails, mainly because of who's behind this rather than the game eventually existing.

@Bazz3442: Would be pretty funny if they remade DS1 to the t and it succeeds. Then they remake DS2 that also succeeds. Then they remake DS3 that flops and then they start asking "Why do people only like the first 2? Guess we remake them again"

But at this point expecting anything from EA is a bad idea. If anything it's good they make easily skippable games.

@Bazz3442: i think the same. it doesn't need a remake, personally i think the remastered trilogy and then a new game route would of been a better one. it would have been quicker to get a game out that way aswell so people have something before a full new game.

this remake is years away and like you said it doesn't even need remaking because the mechanics, level design, AI etc all hold up really well today. i think EA got to excited about the capcom RE remakes and thought we should do that to make dead space successful when i reality they didn't even need to do that.

i think people would have been more than happy with a 4k 60fps remastered trilogy on next gen consoles and then a brand new game in the works aswell.

very underwhelming. literally no gameplay, no release date so could be years away and more than likely is.

publishers need to stop doing this, announcing games years and years from release, just announce a game then release it within 8-12 months. you don't need years and years of hype to sell a game, of all people i thought EA would know that considering they announced and released apex on practically the same day.

@xnshd: You cant use Apex as an example tho.

Respawn worked on Apex but ,so far as i know,EA was left in the dark.

When Apex was nearly finished,Respawn informed EA that they have a BR game ready to release.

As we all know now,Apex came out with little hype and in very short time after announcement.

@sladakrobot: i 100% can guarantee that isn't true. the articles that said this was simply just PR spin from EA. there is no way that EA wouldn't have known that respawn was working on a BR game.

where did the funding come from?

did they all have to hide all evidence of its existence everytime EA execs came around for updates on current projects?

did respawn just decide to put bullshit microtransactions into the game out of its own free will?

again absolutely zero chance of EA not knowing about apex till release. also doesn't really take away from my point of EA announcing and releasing apex on almost the same day.

even if it was possible (its not) that EA didn't know about apex until it almost launched. EA would have made the decision to announce the game and ship it almost at the same time. so at the end of the day the final say about announcement and the launch would have been EA.

@xnshd: the interview with Drew McCoy suggests that EA had no hand in development and Respawn pitched the game to the EA executives to greenlight it.
EA was surprised what the game is about so my opinion that EA was left in the dark until very late is valid(ofcourse if everything in the interview is true).

@sladakrobot: almost certainly isn't true. a publisher the size of EA don't just let developers go and make a game without knowing what it is until right before launch. also i would like to think that respawn wouldn't have wanted bullshit microtransactions in the game if it was up to them.

nobody in their right mind in 2019 puts loot boxes in a game after the star wars fiasco a few years before. so the only explanation for them being there is EA, which in turn means EA knew about apex since the loot boxes in apex can't have been added in the last minute because its tied to the progression in the game not just random drops.

@xnshd: It's probably going to be about a year or so.

You literally can't point out an EA in engine trailer that wasn't honest with the actual game's graphics. (Well with anything after 2015)

@xnshd: while I agree, seeing official confirmation along with very brief in-engine footage was more than enough to get me hyped. Normally teasers like this do nothing for me but I've been dying for some kind of new Dead Space for so long that I'll take this over not knowing if another Dead Space game will ever release.

I felt the same way about the Callisto Protocol teaser from last year. Again those types of trailers usually don't do anything for me but a reveal for a Dead Space-like game, made by former Dead Space developers had me stoked.

@sparent180: don't get me wrong i want a new dead space as much as anybody i love the games, hell i even liked dead space 3 for what it was.

yet i still hate these trailers because now i have seen enough of these types of trailers to know that it will be atleast a year before we see anything from the game again. when it does finally reappear which is gonna be at minimum 12 months time, possibly even 2 years time, the game isnt going to release for atleast 2 years maybe more and id rather them say nothing until its 12 months or less from release.
