Deadpool Director Reveals Why He Quit the Sequel

"I wanted to make the same kind of movie that we made before."

Tim Miller helped turn the R-rated, modestly-budgeted Deadpool into one of the biggest hits of 2016, but in October he quit as director of Deadpool 2. Miller has now spoken about his decision to leave the sequel.

No Caption Provided

In an interview with CG Garage, Miller explained that he was resistant to making Deadpool 2 a bigger film than the original. "I didn't want to make some stylized movie that was three times the budget," he said. "If you read the internet--who cares, really? But for those of you who do, I wanted to make the same kind of movie that we made before because I think that's the right movie to make for the character. So don't believe what you read on the internet."

Miller went on to explain that, contrary to comments made last month by star Ryan Reynolds, his experience of making Deadpool was a positive one. "Even when some people go, 'The movie was really hard to make', the movie was a joy to make. I think you see it on screen. We all had such a good time. We had a few arguments in post, but nothing more than usual.

"The crew was so great, everybody was going to come back and we were going to have such a good time and the idea that it was a difficult movie… it wasn't, it was a joy, and it was the best experience of my life."

Miller's comments follow those made by Reynolds this week, who suggested that Deadpool 2 wouldn't be the bigger film that the director suggests it might be. "We have to resist the temptation to make it bigger in scale and scope, which is normally what you do when you have a surprise hit movie," he told EW. "But actually stay true to the tenets that it's the tone and the style and the humor that make it so special. It's not the explosions and the special effects."

Deadpool 2 will now directed by David Leitch, who previously made the cult action hit John Wick and the upcoming John Wick: Chapter 2. While it does not yet have a confirmed release date, Fox recently announced the dates for two movies featuring X-Men characters. Deadpool 2 is expected to be one of these, alongside New Mutants.

He's right to keep it the same, low budget, small scale. That's what helped make it a success. Forces them to focus on the things that matter...CHARACTER and character MOMENTS. Give in to spectacle and all will be lost.

Tim Miller wants to proove that he is a magician that can make hits with small budgets.

Fox want to create more money and dedicated followers and they know that the next step will recquire some more juice, for example they cant lose again half of the film to show the hero without super powers, more minutes of super powers mean more specials effects, which also means more money spent. The inclusion of new and more fancy super heroes, like Cable, who is a huge part of deadpool's life, would surely multiply the budget for the film, to adapt Cable on screen you need to accept a living budget devourer. Greater budget means greater expectations, more pressure, less ovations for the miracle maker director, thats why Miller left...

I think David Leitch is a better choice if not an equal one. Long as the franchise keeps moving and has directors of talent, I really don't care about the details. Just the end result. I absolutely love the movie John Wick.

Im surprised it had such a small budget, the opening scene (the chase) was pretty epic and it did look real. Didnt look cheap in any way.

"Deadpool director reveals why he quit sequel" - that title...where does he exactly reveals why he quit? He only says that " what they say in internet is not true (about him wanting to make bigger sequel) and he really looooved making Deadpool movie. That's it. This title is a trap !

@Chernnunos: You could...just ignore articles like this? I don't know how articles are being "shoved" in your face but if there's something I'm not interested in I don't click on it and I definitely don't leave a comment bitching about it.

@Chernnunos: Nah, I'd rather point out how big of professional victim you are. Sorry, this site doesn't cater to just you and your interests. You should go create your own website and then that'll solve the problem of seeing articles you don't like. Good luck! :D

@Chernnunos: LMFAO, if you think I'm triggered in any way you're a bigger idiot than I originally thought. Your original comment brought nothing to the conversation and was bitching for the sake of bitching. You must be infatuated with me to post on my wall also. It's hilarious to see my notification feed be filled up completely by you. Seems to me YOU'RE the one that's triggered.

These directors are tools. (They get paid no matte what, never risking any of their money)

Its all writing and actors. (all of which are back for the sequel)

This tool of a director didn't want to work with a big budget.

So Ryan was excited about getting more money since he risked making the first. Mean while the director who gets paid no matter what doesn't want to work hard on a bigger budget movie.

@StephenSays: I agree with you in one aspect..the writers ARE the total kings of all visual entertainment. Everything else is second. Without the vision at the start and written script, road map, there's........NOTHING.

@StephenSays:

I'm gonna guess that you're a kid who hasn't worked a day in his life. Anyone who works for a company does not technically risk his/her own money. The company is the one who risks the money, but on the flip side, they also earn all the money.

But having said that, the director's reputation is on the line, and a movie is nothing without a good director. Just like how Metal Gear Survive will be rubbish without Kojima.

@jhcho2: all great til that final line. Just screamed hipster. Massive bet too, but guess we'll see. I like most rational people try to hold on judgement until you know, i have or see it. Now if you wanna say "i think it will be trash" sure.

Still seems like blindly following a guy for no reason but thats your choice. Also shutting off a game entirely because of 1 man. But im sure if its good youll have always said it would be good or youll be nowhere.

What's the issue with a movie larger in scope if it can keep the humour and pace of the original? It can be done. You don't have to compromise one for the other.

@soul_starter: conversely, keeping humour and pace does not prevent a movie from becoming bloated, and convoluted. There isn't anything saying you can't have both but there is also nothing saying having both will make it better. Only the director knows exactly what direction it was heading so we are obligated to trust his judgement instead of allowing our arrogance to fuel our speculation.

@lionhartwolf: There's also the fact that with more money comes more voices interfering with the creative process. You start getting handed down ideas of what the movie should be, who to cast, and how to attract a bigger audience from studio execs and financial investors. Even the director gets directed and that's usually when big budget affairs go south.

What a little bitch. If you can't handle a budget or let alone handle an uptick in budget for a more quality film then you should just stick to indie films or never make movies again. The guy just can't "play under pressure."

@wrestlingdude: You're going to have to specify which one since both Reynolds and Miller are claiming to have made the same statement, and then explain why one would be a little bitch and not both or neither since again they're claiming to have said the same thing.

@horizonwriter: You know 150% that I'm not marking Reynolds. I even stated that he (Miller) should just stick to indie films. That right there throws Reynolds out of a very easy equation that Miller is the "little bitch." It won't affect the sequel if Miller isn't a part of it.

I don't mind bigger movie. After all, they have already used origins story in first movie (which is kind of low profile, low budget part of the movie) so sequel should have more action and less "what happened".

Deadpool does require specific approach, being merc with mouth... focus on story, characters and their interactions, dialogues. But hey, so do Spider-Man require focus on dialogues (and monologues), him also being hero with mouth... and new Homecoming seems to be on right track between Spidey's verbal abuse of adversaries, getting bruised for the very same, and high-profile action overall.

What I'm trying to say is, big budget movie does not have to be all action, none story. If done right. I only hope they will get people close to character to create good story.
