Death Stranding: Kojima Thinking About A Sequel, But Would "Start From Zero"

Kojima might not be done with the world of Death Stranding just yet.

Death Stranding, Sony's big holiday 2019 release, is the first game from Hideo Kojima in the wake of his split from Konami. The game received mostly positive reviews (including our own 9/10 review), and seems to have pleased many fans of Kojima's previous work on the Metal Gear Solid series. In a recently-published discussion, held shortly before the game was released, Kojima has briefly touched on the possibility of a sequel--though you shouldn't expect such a game, if it ever happens, to be a direct continuation of the first game.

In a discussion with Vulture, Kojima discusses his friendship with Norman Reedus, and talks about wanting to work with Reedus again. Kojima said that he would consider making a Death Stranding sequel with Reedus, but that he would "start from zero;" it seemingly would not follow on directly from the first game. There are no further details or thoughts given (although Kojima does share a charming anecdote about Reedus' cat throwing up.)

Now Playing: Death Stranding Sequel Would Start From Scratch - GS News Update

Another great tidbit casually dropped in this piece is that Helen Mirren attended the game's launch event because her stepson, Alex Hackford, worked on it as the head of Creative Music Affairs at PlayStation.

Kojima has also hinted on Twitter that he might return to horror after the cancellation of his much-anticipated Silent Hills, which also would have starred Norman Reedus. Nothing specific has been announced about the next game from Kojima Productions, although Death Stranding will receive a substantial update in the middle of December.

Quite enjoyed the game, even though I thought I'd hate it. I think it's bc I played it at a time where I'm severely burnt out on live service, shooting games, etc..

The story was amazing, the world, characters, and cutscenes are beautiful. The gameplay though, I can see being off putting. I ended up loving building roads, shooting monsters, even rocket launching enemy camps to death. I started caring about all the ppl, and making their deliveries.

I don't want a sequel though, as this one wrapped up just fine for me.

Yes. Return to the horror of which you started! Because I would love too a full realization of where PT was headed.

I found this game as overrated as it gets. I'd be fine if this "franchise" just died with this one title, then maybe Kojima could come up with something else... Who am i kidding?! He probably wount.

I just finished Death Stranding a couple of days ago and to be completely honest the thought of another game (assuming it is in the same vein.) doesn’t exactly have me excited.

It’s not that DS was a terrible game but I feel it was severely lacking in certain departments (namely the gameplay.).

I think because the game does everything else so well it almost unintentionally highlights that weakness. I mean, the story (even though it was weird and a bit of a head scratcher at times.) had me eager to see what happened next and the characters and dialogue were top notch.

The graphics and character development were on a level I only wish other developers could emulate and overall its presentation and overall production was in a class all its own.

But… but… that gameplay. Basing the entire gameplay off of essentially other open world games’ “fetch quests” didn’t exactly have me excited to deliver yet another package. 1, or 2 quests every so often like that would be fine but the whole game?!

It’s no wonder when the gameplay shifted to a different form every few chapters I was lapping it up (The battlefields.). It’s not because those levels were so mind-blowing but rather because they were something different. A change of pace from delivering yet another package.

The truth is I haven’t been so conflicted over a game since… well, probably Metal Gear Solid 2.

It’s very rare that when I finish a AAA game I don’t want to dive back into it immediately to, at the very least, finish up some loose ends but Death Stranding… well, I said I probably won’t touch this again. Once again, that is verrrrryyy uncharacteristic of me.

Once again, I’m not saying this game was terrible as there were a plethora of things it not only did well but executed significantly better than most games in that illustrious AAA realm (things that I absolutely loved.) but the very core of the game itself felt like something was lost in translation.

I also enjoyed rocket launching all the MULE camps lol.

IF than make an anthology series set in the world of death stranding. like playing homo ludens and exploring the universe for the origin of the death stranding.

A Death Stranding sequel would be interesting, anyone who has finished it will know why it'd be a very different game, but I'd honestly prefer Kojima to use his clout to do the thing we rarely get from AAA games - one-shots, where we have the whole thing in one go and then he moves on to something else.

What the hell is Helen Mirren talking about in that Instagram post? Death Stranding Original Score was composed by Ludvig Forssell and Joel Corelitz, not this Alex.

Oh no... don't do a sequel of this game, try something different. Unless he gets an epiphany of genius and makes this Death Stranding sequel a real scary game like that old cancelled Silent Hill game, then don't just forget it, strand gameplay is too advanced for today's gaming.

I'm all in for a sequel but at the same time, I rather if Kojima went and go do something new if possible but otherwise, Death Stranding 2 is always welcome in my books.

I hope not. I enjoyed DS for what it was but it became too much of a grind, campaign aside. Delivering in order to raise stats for a distribution centre/NPC and to increase your own stats just felt like too much filler. Exploration could have been made much more than just "find a route to place ziplines between point A>B".

You've made your move to your own successful games studio Kojima, don't enter into duplicity already. Move on to something new and expand your horizons.

@gotrekfabian: I feel that it would be an anthological extension with which to further explore the world of Death Stranding. Hideo Kojima expressed himself a desire to iterate on this idea.

I would personally like to see more complex and varied ways of transportation, Fabian. While chiral clouds might prevent the use of navigational instruments and such, there could still be giant slingshots for gliders, and lighthouses along with player deployed buoys for boats.

@asnakeneverdies: I guess that if delivery wasn't so much of a central role I could get on board with the expansion to DS's universe but to just have more of the same would be too much for me. I'd prefer more action and exploration rather than traversal in the most economic/safe manner possible.

Kojima stating that he wants to work with Reedus again means that it would be Sam again (or possibly Lou!) and that it could be something other than that which we've already seen but I doubt it somehow. I'd like to something else from Kojima productions though, a horror would be great just to annoy Konami as much as anything but something new is what's needed rather than becoming a studio known for one game alone in my opinion.

@gotrekfabian: Oh, I would much prefer a proper Survival Horror game! Believe me, Fabian. 🙏 I'm just afraid that it might be as convoluted and homogenized in its high level gameplay as Death Stranding. 💎 The core might be sublime and unique, but that's not enough when the high level amounts to virtually the same as the competition. 💔

Survival Horror 👻 is an aesthetic that demands tightness. Its core and gameplay, being seen as concentric circles 💡 should be of about the same volume, with the latter barely enclosing the former. ⭕ That doesn't lend itself to compulsive design.

That said, I've been hoping for Kojima Productions to develop a video game with a female protagonist 👧 since Snake Eater. However, I wholeheartedly believe that the release of such a title would literally bring about the Death Stranding! 🐋

Really weird that people are so upset about Death Stranding's gameplay. If people didn't go into thinking, "Kojima's making more Metal Gear," people wouldn't have been so upset by the delivery man gameplay. If an indie studio with no names made this game, people would love it for how weird it is. People are hypocrites.

I hope so, the world of Death Stranding is fascinating. I don't think GameSpot has commented on this, but there's a novelization out now in Japan written by Kenji Yano, the game's cowriter. 📕
