Despite Pokemon Go's Huge Drop in Paying Players, It's Still the Most Profitable Mobile Game - Report

Pokemon Go is so successful that it's dropped 79 percent in paying players and is still the most profitable mobile game, according to digital analytics company Slice Intelligence.

Slice Intelligence's report says that when Pokemon Go launched, it brought in almost twice as many in-game buyers as were already in the mobile gaming market. The game's peak was July 15, but in August it continued to generate more revenue than any other game. Pokemon Go earned 28 percent of the money spent on mobile games, while Candy Crush Saga followed with 4.5 percent. Candy Crush Soda Saga and Game of War: Fire Age came next with 3.5 and 2.9 percent respectively.

Despite the huge drop in players spending money, Pokemon Go remains on top of the competition. As of September 3, almost a quarter of all mobile game spenders purchased something from the augmented-reality game.

Additionally, Slice Intelligence saw a huge increase in Pokemon merchandise sales in August year-over-year. The total revenue came out to 233 percent larger than August 2015. You can see the full report here.

Pokemon Go could also be credited in part for the Nintendo's 3DS success in July. The 3DS was the best-selling game system in the US for the month, surpassing both the Xbox One and PS4. Pokemon Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby combined to sell over 80 percent more copies year-over-year, and Pokemon X and Y jumped in sales to almost 200 percent more than July 2015.

So 20% of the player base was doing ~90% of the spending. Since the player base has dropped 75% and spending has only dropped 10%, then it seems like pretty much all of the remaining people playing this game regularly, also spend money on it regularly. I only knew 2 people who really got into it, and both of them regularly spent money on in app purchases.

I will say though, 1 single app getting 25%-30% of ALL money spent on mobile games on the platform, is almost incomprehensible. Personally, I deleted it when the tracking got broken and wasn't fixed. I mean cmon, the main appeal of the game was supposed to be the finding of the pokemon, which due to the broken tracking had most people who played the game just using lures and hanging out at hotspots where other people were consistently using lures, etc.

Ugh. In-game transactions have ridiculous margins. Value-wise, it's similar to them charging $300 for a retail game. Hardly anyone would stand for that. But somehow people keep putting money into these shite-value micro-transactions. I don't get it...!

Is it addiction-like behaviour? Is it death by a thousand paper cuts? Do people not realize how much they're spending over the course of months (in many cases, far more than a standard, full-priced game)?

@bigdegs: Heres the trick. To 30 million people, the game cost too much and they enjoy the free part. But to 10 million rich people, the game is cheap and they dont mind spending $60 bucks a month. So lets do the math. Whats 10 million times $60 bucks? Ill tell you the answer right after i get back from the bank.

I believe they have a term for those people: whales. Or we can go nostalgic and call them suckers.

FYI, there are plenty of rich people who wouldn't go near these micro-transactions because they actually understand value. In fact, I think you got your stats backwards. There's 30 million people who can't really afford to buy in-game shit, but do it anyway because they like the feeling of being superior. And there's 10 million rich people who have better things to do with their time and money.

@bigdegs: Im saying its people who think $60 is spare change. Time is money. Some people dont have time to spend collecting Pokeballs all day. They rather drop a dollar in a few secs and call it a day.
