Despite Ubisoft CEO's Objections, Former Activision Owner Buys Even More Shares

Vivendi now owns more than 10 percent of Ubisoft.

Vivendi, the company that once owned Activision Blizzard, has announced the purchase of even more shares in Ubisoft. This comes not long after an internal email from Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot described the initial investment, which saw Vivendi buy a 6.6 percent stake in the French game publisher, as "unsolicited and unwelcome."

No Caption Provided

Vivendi announced today that its equity stake in Ubisoft has increased to 10.39 percent, representing a total investment of 244 million Euros, or about $271 million. It also now owns 10.20 percent of Gameloft, up from the 6.2 percent it said that it had acquired earlier this month.

"These investments are part of a strategic vision of operational convergence between Vivendi's content and platforms on one hand and the Ubisoft and Gameloft productions in video games on the other," the company said today. "Vivendi is acting alone, is not in concert with a third party, and has not concluded a temporary sale agreement regarding the Ubisoft and Gameloft shares or voting rights."

The press release goes on to suggest it may continue to buy up more shares of both companies and could eventually seek seats on their respective boards.

Vivendi is the former owner of Activision Blizzard. The company began looking to sell off its majority stake in the publisher in 2012 and eventually did so in 2013. It still owns part of the company, but that figure--roughly 12 percent after the 2013 sale--is now less than six percent.

The sudden interest in Ubisoft and Gameloft hasn't been well received by the two companies. After the initial acquisition, Ubisoft released a public statement saying it had "taken note of the unsolicited action on the part of Vivendi." It also reaffirmed its "intention to remain independent."

This was followed by a leak of the aforementioned Guillemot email, which referenced Vivendi's history of "aggressively pursuing companies within the entertainment sector." Another internal Guillemot email warned of the possibility of the company being "managed by people who don't understand our expertise and what it takes to succeed in this industry."

Despite this, the share price of Ubisoft has increased about 18 percent since Vivendi's initial investment, from 21.39 Euros ($23.77) on October 14 to 25.33 Euros ($28.15) as of this writing.

It's unclear what impact Vivendi's continued acquisition of shares could have on Ubisoft. But considering Ubisoft is among the biggest game publishers in the world, with franchises like Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, and Just Dance under its umbrella, we'll be continuing to monitor this story closely. Ubisoft's quarterly earnings report is due out on November 4, so we'll likely be hearing more then, if not sooner.

Well, I don't know what will happen, but if Ubisoft goes under because of this, their problems with piracy on PC will surely be over. lol

Ima scream here but VIVENDI LEAVE F***** ubisoft alone. I hate this company they screw everything up, blizzard pulled away because of the way they work, what a slimey bunch vivendi are.

I must admit i love ubi's games so if this happens to ubi, ubi will be told what to do, push releases out to quick, rush projects all because this vivendi want money, thats all they are after, to grow n make green, they offer nothing to ubi apart from an insult of a takeover. Yeah ubisoft are really going to be impressed and happy to work with you if you take them over in that way.

I would rather myself approach a dev and say look heres an offer, not go round and buy out peoples shares and be a snake about it all.

I dno ubisoft you got my vote and support on this one, goodluck..

I really don't know who I should be rooting for here. This is like quintessential Alien Versus Predator going on.

Whoever Wins-We lose. God this industry is just such a fucking mess. Hostile takeovers, corrupt journalists, greedy money grubbing companies in bed with said corrupt journalists, SJWs up the yin-yang, the list goes on and on and on. I'm starting to think Pixy from Ace Combat Zero was right.

@mjc0961: If a customer buys something, they agree to the terms of that company regarding usage of their product and services. So, no, Ubisoft isn't forcing anything on anyone. There other games being sold by other companies, so consumers have a choice. If you are upset at a company for its business practices, you must first blame the people who enable them.

It doesn't matter if Ubisoft wants it. they're a publicly traded company so this can happen.

It seems like now that Vivendi has lost Activision they are aggressively going after other companies. Probably in the hopes that another company will also pay them to go away.

It worked out for them last time.

Vivendi seems like a really shitty company.

I work in Gameloft. And for us nothing changes. We are already being run by headless chickens. Even if Vivendi takes over, we will be run by headless chickens.

Alls the same in our world. Now let me get back to creating crap.

@mjc0961: We try man. We try our best to create games. In the studio, we are gamers, trying to make games. But at HQ, there are corporate scums, trying to suck their gamers dry.

Its just a sad sad world.

This sounds like bad news but I really don't care much for Ubisoft these days, they lost their charm several years ago for me. That being said I don't like the sound of what Vivendi is doing here, and it seems unlikely they'll stop at just one publisher/development studio.

I'm not really sure how this stuff works, you'd think Ubisoft themselves would have more control over who can actually buy up their company in such large quantities, but I guess half of the board is probably comprised of financiers and the like who only care about the bottom line in the short term.

At least CD Projekt is still a private company, so these things aren't even possible for them, for now!

Hostile takeover incoming!

This is the problem with deregulated neo-liberal markets. Like, Kuwait and Qatar between them own something like 30% of the British Royal Mail. Urgh.

This is so odd, they wanted out of the game business just a few years back forcing Activision Blizzard to buy out their shares and now this.

Who the hell knows what is going on with that company.

While I have no love for Ubisoft, in this case they really are the 'little' guy, and it's in our benefit to keep entertainment giants like Vivendi out of games if we can help it. If you think Ubi is bad now, being owned by Vivendi won't make them any better.

People must forget that when Vivendi controlled Activision, Activision was doing its best Classic EA impression buying up studios and killing them off. I have a feeling Vivendis renewed interest in the game industry is bad for us all, not just for Ubi Soft.

@theninjaguydon: if vivendi cancelled the division and ghost recon wildlands, ill be fetching my bow out and start head hunting lol. I cant see it happening and i doubt they will own ubisoft by time those games are released, it could take months or even a few years, there would no doubt be some battle in the courts to, i dont think ubisoft will stand by and let this go on. There should be laws against this behaviour.

@yukushi: Ubisoft, who lets their employees work on experimental passion projects like From Dust, Child of Light and Grow Home? Ubisoft, who funds small developers like Nadeo and allows them to maintain relative creative integrity and independence? Ubisoft, who even with their most tired and maligned franchises like AssCreed manage to regularly achieve critical success and maintain huge entertained fanbases? I may not necessarily feel sorry for them but I'm hardly going to laugh if they are ripped apart. It won't make the world a better place if they are gone.

@MattLambertson: this i agree apart from last bit as i like ubisoft, but most of your message is on point in my eyes..ubisoft are very supportive to others around them and they certainly try to make up for there mistakes. I recieved a free game code and got farcry xb1 because of unity mistake, no other devs do that for any game that isnt working properly.

@mjc0961: Literally every review I've seen of Syndicate has been positive. And I've read more than 5 on both large and small sites so I know there's legitimate things people are finding to praise, not just marketing fluff. But I hate microstransactions just as much as the next person. I just think companies that put out good products are worth continuing to exist even if I don't approve of everything they do. Just for the record I haven't even played AssCreed since III so I'm not a fanboy either...except maybe of Nadeo's Trackmania. And From Dust. That was a deeply flawed but incredibly beautiful gem of a game. I feel almost certain that a Vivendi controlled Ubisoft would never have financed From Dust, or Child of Light, or any of their other small-scale passion projects.

Something is definitely afoot here...but I'm not sure what it could be. Vivendi is certainly up to no good; I have to wonder if there isn't some sort of Icahn-esque thing being planned in the coming 12 months.

Vivendi could just be trying to make a play on some short term investment...but why they would bother with Ubisoft, I don't know. It doesn't seem like they've got too much on the horizon.

As I say, something isn't right here...I smell a rat.

@otterbee: So does I, people doesn't seem to get, but companies like Vivendi never stop in one point, they keep moving as long there's path to follow, if they catch Ubisoft, since they have morals, several indies will be in serous danger.

YES. Buy off Ubisoft so these milked out POS games from Ubisoft can finally end and the gaming industry and its consumers can enjoy more innovative games from other developers. Ubisoft really put bad taste in gamers mouth with their repetitious uninspired games not to mention anti-consumerism.

@berserker66666: Vivendi, who used to own Activision, publisher of annual COD games, is probably not the company you should look to in order to stop the release of annual games.

@zero_juice: Nah, it's more from a gamer's perspective than a develop's. As more as more gamers play these repetitive games they taste in gaming change and when something new and innovative comes out, they don't usually embrace them with open arms. It's same with Call of Duty. Everyone's sick of it since it's the same-ish game year after year.

People are tired of it but at the same time, when some new FPS game comes out which are more innovative and better, gamers would inadvertently compare it with Call of Duty cause Call of Duty's from a big company while that new IP is from a smaller company. The reviews also tend to have a positive bias towards these big titles simply cause it's well known even though they've been milked dry and no innovation left while skewering newer IPs despite their innovation simply because they are an unknown game.

If less and less of these milked out games came out from big companies and more innovative games came out from newer companies, more people would embrace those games cause their taste in gaming would be more diverse instead of the same things we do and expect in games like COD, AC and others.
