Destiny 2 Could Run At 60FPS On Console, But Here's Why Bungie Won't Do It

Running at 60 FPS would lead to compromises elsewhere, Bungie says.

Destiny 2 will run at 30 FPS on all consoles--including the more powerful Xbox One X and PS4 Pro--leaving PC as the other way to play at a higher frame rate. In a new interview executive producer Mark Noseworthy said Bungie could theoretically get Destiny 2 running at 60 FPS on console, but doing so would lead to compromises that Bungie was unwilling to make.

"Could we make a Destiny game that ran at 60 FPS? Yes," Noseworthy said in the latest issue of Edge magazine, as reported by Wccftech. "But the space would be smaller, it would be less cooperative, and there'd be fewer monsters to shoot. That's not the game we want to make."

Noseworthy added that beyond anything else, Bungie wants Destiny 2 to be an "incredible action game." He said Bungie is content with the choices it has made.

"We don't feel we've been held back by the choices we've made about world simulation versus frame rate," he said. "In fact, we think we're offering a player experience you can't have elsewhere because of the choices we're making."

For players who put a premium on frame rate, the PC edition of Destiny 2 supports uncapped frame rates. "You can spend as much money as you want, to go as fast as you want," Noseworthy said about Destiny 2's PC edition.

Destiny 2's PC beta begins on August 28 for people who pre-order, opening a day later for everyone. You can watch a 4K/60 FPS trailer for the beta right here.

This is a bit of a lie. The XBOX One X could run Destiny 2 at 60fps without turning down a single setting as long as the game was at 1080p. If you were playing at 4k it would most likely have to do something similar to what the PS4 pro is doing, but might still run with no issues. My friend that works for Bungie tells me that they are keeping the PS4 and XX at almost the same because of their partnership with Sony on the Destiny franchise. So basically because Sony shelled out cash to get the exclusive content, early releases etc. they want to keep them happy and not help sell more copies for MS. Essentially they don't want to give anyone a single reason to pick Xbox over PS

I have Destiny 2 for both my PS4 and PC.

PC just ruined the PS4 version for me, it's basically unplayable now. I can't believe I used to play this shit so much (Destiny 1). It's really, really terrible.

And what's this shit about X and Pro not being able to run it at 60? I bought my PC in 2012 and run this at 1080p60 maxed. What the hell.

Do yourselves a favor; don't try this game on PC, you won't be able to go back to your shitty console version, like what happened to me :(

30, 60, 4K, CPU, GPU, PRO, Scorpio...who the eff cares!

Let's just see if the game is fun. If it is, then play it and enjoy life and stop getting wrapped up in all this petty garbage.

P.S. Thank you, Bungie, for creating a really cool gaming world for us to swashbuckle around in!

All I read here is: we suck at programmation on consoles, we are not able to do what others can do, so go buy a computer. Way to go bungie

@bejito81:

That's way too harsh. What you're not reading is time, money, and the prioritization of features as they relate to those factors and the overall gaming experience for the players.

Destiny 2 will be epic whether it's played at 30FPS on a console or 100 FPS on a beastly PC! I can't wait to play it!

Strange that 4K was a priority for a game like Destiny (first-person shooter). This is like COD prioritizing 4K over 60 FPS. Destiny has a nice aesthetic and all, but delivering a shooter in this day and age at 30 FPS doesn't make any sense. I don't care how little you care about graphics, in fact, the less you care the dumber a decision this sacrifice to hit 4K should look to you. As far as the PCMR is concerned I'm sure a good number of people are going to opt for 2K resolutions at higher refresh rates, because it's a FPS. Wtf Bungie?

30 FPS is fine for PvE but then when you go into PvP graphics setting should be optimized to allow 60 otherwise it's not a good pvp fps.

Is it just me who would prefer a little downgrade in the graphics to have a better FPS? They talk about monster quantity and smaller space, but having less graphic power wouldn't do the trick?

Im thinking.. its 2017 already for fu*ks sake, if they have a CHOICE, like he said, couldnt they just make a pool and ask the consumers what they want?

@aj87:

Dropping the resolution won't do the trick. Because resolution is GPU only, and it will not reduce CPU usage if the game already max out the CPU power

Lowering the draw distance might help, but the game will look awful if low draw distance too much, and you will see a lot of pop ups

@aj87: There's too much load on the (very weak I might add) CPU and you won't take it off by lowering resolution and other graphics settings that are handled more or less solely by the GPU.

@tehsideshow: That's where you're wrong. Your i5 (probably a 2500k, right?) is a CPU that cost around 220$ in 2011 (without anything else added), while the PS4/Xone are WHOLE computer systems that went for just 400$ in 2013 (with tech from 2012 inside them). Your CPU is still far more powerful than the one in current gen consoles (be it the regular ones or the PRO/X), especially if overclocked.

@Berserk8989: from what I've read and from the benchmarks I've seen the AMD Jag 8 core is closely related to an underclocked AMD FX-8120 Zambezi 8-Core. According to Game debate the Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz is a bit better than the 8120. So I still stand by and say I think it could come close to the performance of an i5 running at 2.5gz or so. I think 60fps at 1080p is a no brainer for almost any game on this console.

@tehsideshow: Sites like Gamedebate give you are normally far off real-life game performance, especially when comparing CPU's from different manufacturers, like Intel vs AMD in this example. A 3570K performs considerably better in most games, just take a look at some benchmarks, especially at the min. and max. frame-rates.

No, the Jaguar is not really comparable to a FX-8120. It's more of a tablet/laptop equivalent of it (like a laptop i5 7200u is compared to a full fledged 7th gen i5). Even a FX 8320 (which is much more powerful than those Jaguars) paired with a GTX 1060 has trouble keeping 60 fps in Destiny 2. It regularly drops to the 40's during action and is just really inconsistent. Sure, developers can optimize a game for a console more than for a PC, due to the same specs on every unit and because of the low-level hardware access that they got. The console operating systems are also not as demanding on it as Windows is on a desktop PC for example, but all of this still isn't enough to make up for the really low-performance power-saver CPU's that the Jaguars are.

Glad there are consoles. They are stopping PC development. So I can buy a new PC every 5 or 6 years but not before.I still am surprised I still can play games at ultra settings after 2.5 years.Normally I should select normal or high detail but ultra. So destiny could run 60.Hahah who cares, consoles you are doing your job already. You are saving me a lot of money.Thank you thank you thank you. :D :D

@karavanasam: Consoles set a comfortable standard. It forces people with potato PC's to upgrade AT LEAST to console power level, while also catering to people that buy high-end hardware, since they don't have to upgrade for years basically.

So instead of telling the truth they just Lie. The truth is Microsoft and Sony won't allow it as it has to be a level playing field across the older consoles online. As the PC is not up against the consoles online it can run uncompromised.

It would just be good if these devs told the truth instead of all this crap they come up with.

@tarheelsforever: Nah the game probably could run on Xbox One X at 60fps but that wasn't going to happen because Sony has Bungie in their backpockets and will never allow the Xbox One X version to be better than the PS4 Pro version. You don't believe me? Just go check out all the exclusive stuff Sony has for Destiny 1 and 2.

@dbreezy229: Tinfoil hat sits a bit tight, eh? The game's not 60 fps on X1X, because it's not possible to do on the regular X1. There would be no parity between the two consoles and without parity it's basically a pay-to-win system like on PC: the more you pay, the higher your frames and with them your advantage over other players.

Looks like the same game to me, i'm not sure. Does kinda suck being so low in FPS though. Xbox One and Ps4 i can see why the 30 FPS being old hardware, but the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro, That's only because they share game servers with the old hardware right?

If the Ps4 Pro and Xbox One x had their own servers, you should see 60 fps no reason not too. It's not like you have to play at 4k, shoot, if those consoles can do 4k at 30 fps you should be able to play at 120 fps at 1080p.

@Popa2caps: Your logic is flawed, it isn't as easy as 1+1=2, buddy... Resolution is a task handled mostly by the GPU, while framerate is handled by CPU and GPU. A good graphics card, paired with a weak CPU, can have the same framerate at 1080p and at 4K. In that case, we call the CPU a 'bottleneck'.

I'm no expert but I don't believe the 1X is unable to run D2 at 1080p60. It's running it at 4K 30 isn't it?

Bungie are being held back by the parity bullshit?✌️

That's the 1st problem, the other problem why it can't be 60 is, that it's apparently impossible to do on the regular Xbox One and they want to have parity between the two versions.

LOL hear come the graphics snobs whining and complaining about how the game should but doesn't perform. To all you spoiled gamers out there, just remember Super Mario Bros, Sonic, Chrono Trigger, FF7, Legend of Zelda. These games are regarded as some of the best games ever made. Not one of you will complain about the graphics. Stop being asshats and try to enjoy the product that dozens of people spent countless hrs to create for you, the uptight consumer. Be content with a product that is far superior than something that was made a measly 5 years ago. Grow the **** up and enjoy the age we live in instead of complaining all the time and taking it for granted. Pussies.

@thejash07 All those old games you mentioned ran at 60fps. Higher frame rate = more immersion and more fun. Most people on here are complaining that they don't give a damn about the resolution or other graphics settings as much as the frame rate. You low frame rate apologists are morons.

@gsbliss: I'll take a fully modded s skyrim running 25 fps. Why? Because graphical fidelity, better draw distance meshes, textures, and shadows, are what immerses me in the game. Not fps....

Fps has become too much of a buzzword. Most couldn't tell what fps the game was running at if they aren't told.

Now, the new pointless thing to whine for is crossplay!

@gsbliss: You talk about immersion as if some 32-bit game was "immersive". First off, a smoother picture, which is basically what frame rates provide, doesn't necessarily provide immersion. If you truly believe that, and if you believe frame rates provide more fun, you're a blind sheep. Fun is how much you enjoy the game. Frame rate shouldn't be a determining factor. Also, the fact that you think I'm an apologist shows you have no understanding of my previous comment. I wasn't saying anything about people accepting frame rates. I was stating that people bitch too much nowadays about technology and games. Get your facts right, moron.

Ok so if it's because there's too many enemies in screen then why not make it 60fps for multiplayer PvP only? I mean call of duty and star wars and battlefield can do it? Is Destiny more graphically advanced than those games? Why not just keep Destiny at 1080p and not bump it to this more demanding 4k or checkerboard? Surely if you keep it at 1080p you can hit 60fps yes or no? And if not and it truly is all the enemies on screen or whatever they said then why not just make it 60fps in multiplayer?

If they can make the game 30fps @4k they are lying about being able to make just as good of a game at 60fps. 900p would be fine.
