Destiny 2 Cross-Play Is On Bungie's Roadmap, Here's When It's Coming
In the future, Xbox, PlayStation, and PC players will be able to play Destiny 2 together, regardless of platform.
While Bungie's Destiny 2 reveal livestream was largely focused on content that will be playable this year--including Season 11, which begins today--one of the most exciting bits of news concerned a feature that we'll have to continue waiting for: cross-play.
During the stream, Bungie confirmed that it is looking to enable Destiny 2 cross-play, but that it's something we won't see until 2021 at the earliest. There were no specific details on how and when this will happen, but it's nonetheless terrific news and something Destiny fans have been clamoring for for years.
During a subsequent stream with DrLupo, Bungie's Luke Smith revealed that the goal is for Destiny 2 cross-play to be available in 2021. He also confirmed that cross-play will span PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PC, and Stadia.
"Intergenerational" cross-play is coming first, sometime in 2020, and will span console generations within the same family before the full-blown implementation. Intergenerational cross-play will allow Xbox One and Xbox Series X players to play together, while PS4 and PS5 players will be able to do so. Bungie also announced that Destiny 2 will be a free upgrade on PS5 and Xbox Series X for current-gen console owners.
Bungie took a step toward connecting players across platforms with the introduction of cross-save last year. This allows you to play on one platform and then use that same account on another console, effectively letting you play with anyone on any system--provided you have access to the hardware and purchase the necessary access (some, but not all, content transfers between platforms). Cross-play would be the next step, letting you play with everyone no matter their system of choice.
