Destiny 2 PC Beta Restricts Certain Game Capture And Voice Chat Apps

You'll have to tweak your setup slightly.

Destiny 2's PC beta is coming up soon, and, as with any big PC title, there'll likely be a lot of people streaming it out. Unfortunately for streamers and people who use voice chat, Bungie announced today that it's blocking certain features of common game capture and communication apps.

On its website today, Bungie explained that, in order to prevent cheating, it is resisting any attempts by apps "to insert code into the game client." Many capture apps tweak game clients slightly while running to push notifications, capture a game directly, or other such functions.

The most notable apps affected by these restrictions are capture programs like OBS and XSplit. These are the most popular programs used by streamers, but they won't be able to fully function while Destiny 2 is running, as the Game Capture mode in these apps will be blocked. To capture in fullscreen, Bungie states that you'll have to either use an external capture device or a hardware manufacturer app like Nvidia Shadowplay or AMD Relive. You can, however, use OBS and XSplit if you're willing to play in windowed mode, as those apps' screen and window capture functionality isn't restricted.

Overlays and notifications from third-party apps are also blocked, so visual queues from Discord or Mumble won't work. You also won't be able to track performance statistics, as the game will block framerate overlays from programs like Fraps.

The PC beta begins for people who have pre-ordered the game on August 28, and it opens to the public on August 29. It ends on August 31. You can check out the minimum and recommended specs for the beta here, and you can see what the beta includes here. Destiny 2 officially launches on PC on October 24.

Hmm, seems dubious, can't see why it would prevent cheating on a dedicated server with online saves.

@Gamer_4_Fun: It's on Battlenet, it has to be dedicated servers. Peer to peer doesn't work with an MMO.

Edit: Well I've gone and looked into this rathjer than just presume and it's using peer 2 peer. Well they won't be getting a penny from me. I'm not paying for peer 2 peer crap.

@GarGx1: Battle.net only handles the social aspects on the game. The actual matchmaking servers are handled by Bungie, and the network for multiplayer gaming is p2p.

This was done to prevent word about how bad the game may be on PC. Think about it. Its nothing to do with cheating.

You can, however, use OBS and XSplit if you're willing to play in windowed mode, as those apps' screen and window capture functionality isn't restricted.

What about Windowed Borderless? That's kinda like running in fullscreen with Vsync on. Can you use OBS etc then to capture the game?

You also won't be able to track performance statistics, as the game will block framerate overlays from programs like Fraps.

I'm pretty sure that if you can capture the game with Shadowplay, you can use also simply use Shadowplay's FPS counter.

This is a huge technical oversight. It's not only streamers that use overlays, but many people use Discord overlays for ingame voice chat. Players also add this to their Steam library as a non-Steam game to catalog screenshots and to use Steam chat. When more Activision games appear on the Blizzard Launcher, I can see Blizzard implementing an ingame overlay for such features. Even places like Digital Foundry use overlays and fullscreen capture to test performance.

Every major PC game can still implement anti-cheat, while not being this restrictive. Hopefully Vicarious Visions fixes this before the final release.

@RikiGuitarist: it's not a technical oversight, it was an overt decision by the developers to try to combat cheaters.

@puaemerson: Combating cheaters isn't the technical oversight part, that's needed and welcome. The technical oversight is the fact that it also affects legitimate software and capture as well :)

@RikiGuitarist: It's not for the game, it's for the beta. The beta obviously has unfinished code, so they simply put in code to block any external code from being used. Thus these apps were blocked. In the final game they will have finished code and the ability to screen certain changes by external apps.

I rather lose a few streams and have no people getting "god mode" activated.

@sargentpsgamer: It is not just for the beta, but for the game itself.

@sargentpsgamer: What about reviews? Performance Analysis by Digital Foundry? A PC Port report from TotalBuscit? How the hell am I supposed to make an informed decision when they have blocked the tools that people need to get this information.

@sargentpsgamer: is there anything to make you think this is only for the beta? From their statement I assumed it was for beta and the final game as well

@sargentpsgamer: I know it's for the beta, hence my last statement of Vicarious Visions fixing this for launch.

Do you have a link to where the developers have stated that this will not be in the final game? Thanks :)
