A beta is also on the way.

Along with the game's reveal trailer, Bungie has officially shared the first details about Destiny 2.

Today's news confirmed an open beta is coming to all platforms this summer, with those who preorder getting in first. The game itself then launches on September 8. Although Destiny wasn't available on PC, the sequel has been confirmed for the platform alongside the expected Xbox One and PS4 versions.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Destiny 2 Release Date Announced

Here's the basic premise of the game, as described by Bungie: "Humanity's last safe city has fallen to an overwhelming invasion force led by Ghaul, the imposing commander of the brutal Red Legion. He has stripped the city's Guardians of their power, and forced the survivors to flee. You will venture to mysterious, unexplored worlds of our solar system to discover an arsenal of weapons and devastating new combat abilities. To defeat the Red Legion and confront Ghaul, you must reunite humanity's scattered heroes, stand together, and fight back to reclaim our home."

Today's trailer doesn't feature any gameplay; that will be coming as part of a livestream scheduled for May 18. Also absent was your companion Ghost, but voice actor Nolan Northhas confirmed he is returning for the sequel.

Destiny 2 will have a season pass called the Expansion Pass that includes "Expansion I and Expansion II, offering brand new story missions, cooperative activities, competitive multiplayer, and a wealth of new weapons, armor, and gear."

No Caption Provided

The description stating that competitive multiplayer--and not competitive multiplayer maps--are included makes it sound as if Crucible isn't included in the base game. That might very well be a typo, but we've followed up with Activision to clarify and will report back when we know more.

Besides the base game, there will be several different special editions. A Digital Deluxe Edition comes with a Legendary sword, emote, and Cabal-themed emblem. The Limited Edition comes with the game, a steelbook case, the Expansion Pass, and various physical and digital bonuses. The Collector's Edition (pictured in the gallery above) comes with all of that plus additional physical bonuses, including a messenger bag/backpack combo and a solar-powered USB charger.

They should have just called it D2 and had Emilio Estevez try to band together a rag tag group of Guardians to take on the enemy ... refer to the Crucible as the Goodwill Games and I'm in !!

Fool me once, shame on you Bungie. Not buying another boring FPS with a useless story, meaningless classes, pointless weapons and armor, and mindless, repetitive, shallow gameplay. They need to reboot the series with this one, not just make a sequel.

You just know, no matter how they fucked up poeple with their first season pass, people will flock out and buy it once again. Man i hate how every game have content striped from their original game just to sell it to us in season passes. DO NOT PRE ORDER GAMES OR BUY SEASONPASS.

Destiny was the most overhyped barebone game to come out on consoles 2 years ago. and what they delivered in those DLC packs should really give people a big red light above their head. (Not talking to fanboys here ofc cous they will say The dark below and house of wolfs was great :D )

Covers shows the faces of generic characters. Guessing that there will be a display helmet option this time.

@s0ldier69: They added on in the last game too. I mean, it really doesn't matter what your character looks like in Destiny 1 at all. You were in first person 99% of the time.

Fuk all the Destiny haters this is going to be great and the most anticipated game of the year. Winning the GOTY at the end of the year. You all piss and moan about expansions and content yet Blizzard does the same shit with WOW and no one says nothing........

@Torvar72: **** Destiny haters? Hey, don't get mad at us for wanting a game that has depth and is meaningful in some way. Unlike you, I cannot find fun in sitting there hitting the same crappy, rusty, squeaky feeder bar constantly, waiting for a rare chance a bland food pellet to drop that still leaves you hungry.

If they reboot the series instead of making a sequel, then maybe I will consider it. But, if they keep the same mindless, meaningless, boring, repetitive, shallow gameplay they currently have with useless character classes, weapons and armor, and half a story, then it is going to be right there at the bottom of the GOTY list.

@Torvar72: Look, I liked Destiny 1, and Destiny 2 is probably MY most anticipated game of the year, but THE most anticipated game of the year? I doubt it. We got Zelda this year. Now I wouldn't be surprised if Destiny 2 ends up winning a couple of GotY's. Not a ton (again, Zelda), but my money is on Bungie making some big improvements and Destiny 2 being pretty great.

@Torvar72: I'm sorry but it will never win GOTY. Destiny was bad from the start. It needed an expansion and reworking of the system for people to consider it worthy of being a playable game. It offered no story and is just making one up as it goes, there is no plan for it. WoW was a classic from the start. The expansions in Destiny offer way less than what WoW expansions offer. WoW expansions last at least 2 years each and cost $40-50 while Destiny released 4 smaller expansions within 2 years totaling $110. Blizzard also usually releases tons of content between expansions. In the end, you can't really compare the two anyways, WoW will always be a better franchise.

@ballashotcaller: With WoW's subscription fee, that totals to over $110 a year.
