Destiny 2's 5-Year Plan Means You Shouldn't Expect Destiny 3 Anytime Soon

There's a lot to look forward to in Destiny 2's ever-evolving world.

With Destiny 2 gearing up for the release of the Shadowkeep expansion and New Light free-to-play version next week, developer Bungie outlined what's to come in the first-person looter-shooter MMO. Destiny 2's five-year plan is now underway--and it really kicks off when Shadowkeep releases on October 1. With such a long-term plan in place, this likely means that Destiny 3, if it ever happens, is years away from release. In the meantime, here's how Guardians can expect Destiny 2's ongoing updates to work.

Various Bungie developers--including game director Luke Smith, community head Eric Osborne, production director Justin Truman, and more--spoke about their vision for Destiny 2 with Shadowkeep and beyond in a new vidoc. Bungie is investing in a large system overhaul for the looter-shooter. Everything is changing: armor, enemies, missions, and even the game world itself. The studio claimed it wants to "build Destiny for its core fans [and] the people who love it."

Now Playing: New Destiny 2 Five-Year Plan Includes Big Nightfall Changes - GS News Update

Everything Is Changing

Director Luke Smith started the vidoc by saying he wants to construct a world where you feel like all your actions move the universe forward in some meaningful way. To achieve this goal, Smith said Shadowkeep is the "first step" for Bungie to build the world it is envisioning for Guardians. Shadowkeep will call you back to the Moon, an important Destiny locale that has undergone some frightening changes. Community head Eric Osborne explained that part of the game is understanding what has changed the Moon and why, and what has the Vanguard Hunter Eris Morn discovered on or in it. Whatever discovery this is, according to Osborne, will have drastic implications on Destiny's world, extending possibly to March 2020, all the way to this time next year, and beyond. But returning to the Moon will induce nightmares that manifest into enemies from the past.

Shadowkeep doesn't just present a new suite of missions and raids. It also changes the way you play Destiny 2, according to production director Justin Truman. The studio transitioned to talking about armor, which is seeing a drastic overhaul with Shadowkeep. Armor 2.0, at its core, is about making every character slot count. Stats have returned in the character screen, finishers have mods that affect their properties, and more. Further, Shadowkeep will introduce a bevy of new weapons, from seasonal equipment to Shadowkeep gear and some that glow when nightmares are nearby. Smith says Shadowkeep will allow you to "build your character your way."

More Ways To Play

With Shadowkeep comes the evolution of how Bungie handles its season pass. The studio is focusing more on how the seasons actually connect and relate to each other in order to create a more cohesive narrative across the whole of Destiny 2. The studio wants to tell "one continuous story" that poses and answers questions, all starting with Shadowkeep.

Fellow production director Matt Zitterman explained that each time you log in to Destiny 2 there's a new way to play thanks to the seasons. Each system--from season rank to the Artifact--is "designed to make the game more compelling as a character-building game," according to Zitterman. The Artifact, an infinite power grind, will give you the tools you need to defeat Destiny 2's new harder enemies, the Champions, as well as the new Nightfall modes. With the introduction of the Artifact, the endgame will soon be about overleveling your character so you can take on Destiny 2's hardest challenges.

Repurposing Familiarity

Having a "healthier PvP game" is part of Bungie's focus within the five-year plan. That includes bringing back original Destiny maps--like Fragment and Widow's Court--placing Elimination back into the Crucible's rotating game modes, and more. Each week will feature different iterations on game modes, where Bungie will be looking for player-feedback to make tweaks.

Bungie also wants Destiny 2 to have a single, evolving world. The Season of the Undying sees the Vex invading the Moon, and it kicks off the first act of Year Three. From there, Destiny 2 will see a bevy of new content, including new raids, nightmare hunts, exotic quests, and "so much more no matter what player you are," Osborne said. Creating a single, evolving world is "one of the biggest changes" coming to Destiny 2 overtime. All of these changes follow Activision and Bungie's break up earlier this year, which now sees the FPS developer showcasing the breadth and scope of its vision for Destiny 2.

Shadowkeep is expected to hit PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on October 1. Destiny 2 will be a day-one launch title when the Google Stadia comes out sometime this November.

I have a few problems with Destiny. I was a day 1 preorder the best version for Destiny. It started out ok then shit fell to shit. I remember beating the game and getting the stranger’s rifle and thinking this is Bullshit. I blue weapon for beating the story on hard. Then the raids became the focus. Out of every raid, including D2, I’ve did about 8 raids. 5 of them are VoG and 3 are Crota. Got to the end of TTK raid and team bailed. Tried to get another team but since I never beat it was always the same shit. Need experience or a certain or both. I skipped D2 release and got when psn released it for free. Got the expansions and Forsaken. Again tried to get into the raids. Couldn’t. I have done 2-3 nightfalls total and that was because of that glitch you could die after chest appears to fight the boss again. That is as much as I got into the multiplayer aspect that didn’t have matchmaking. The whole reason to not have matchmaking is awful. Basically saying that if you have a squad that you can beat the raid because you know that squad’s strengths and weaknesses. But sites like lfg and others do matchmaking of random players. Granted most of them are very specific in what they are looking. But adding matchmaking to give all players a chance to get the raid loot hurts who? No one. You can’t get mad if the raid fails because you know the risks of randoms. At least with matchmaking for things like raids and nightfalls gives all Destiny players a chance. Instead because of this the raids in Destiny one were like completed by like 11% of the player base and D2 had like a little over 5%. The real hardcore doing the raids, everything at reset, owning everything for each class, are not the ones that keep the game going. It’s the ones that do most things they can by themselves. That is why Destiny always see a huge drop off after dlc is release. If they added matchmaking the game would be so much better.

I will say Luke Smith, ever since he made that comment about the year one D1 collectors edition I can’t stand him. He is the biggest ass and surprised they still let him speak. I will say the money they got from the invest won’t last forever and there is only so much you can add to a game like D2. At what point as a fan do you stop buy the yearly season pass for $40? Add on another $40 for the yearly dlc and you are paying more the price of a $60. If this year is like last by December you will have spent $250+ dollars on a game that can’t keep its fans interested longer then a month.

I'll admit that I've been out of the loop for a while as I quit right during the Gambit Prime season (Season of the Drifter?), but if they want to make PVP more robust, I felt (while I played PVP at least) that they should try and balance the weapons so that Handcannons weren't the primary that you'd choose over pretty much everything else, with secondaries basically being whatever can 1 or 2 shot people at close to mid range.

I say this even as someone who could use certain hand cannons decently well. A well rolled Duke until I was able to get Ace of Spaces, and then Ace of Spades after that. Sure I was able to win around half the time (I'm not THAT good at PVP) or slightly more, but it was boring as hell to always be hand cannoning the head all the time, and then reloading to get that damage boost and doing it all over again.

I got sick of that repetition. Winning by doing things the same way every time without variation because it's the only way to win wasn't fun for me, it was work.

@arc_salvo: They change up the weapon meta with every major update. It sounds like all the weapons are getting juiced in PvE, but I think scout and auto rifles are getting a bit of a buff in PvP as well.

You’ll probably still see plenty of hand cannons and pulse rifles, but I’ll bet it balances out a little.

All i wanted Destiny is the "orignal" game that never came out. The story they had for the game, before they fired that "story guy" and everything went to shit.

Its just change of pixels and numbers. Still the same shitty infrastructure and limited functions.

Bungie have not learn and build on past experience. From D1 till now, still acting like 1 day old baby.

I used to love D1, now D2 really f**** up the weapon system. Stop playng D2 during vanila, after i had 3x everything worth having. Last time i played (i was kinda on the fence about buyng the expasion) everyone was using weapons in the "wrong" slot and i didnt bother to figure it out. Uninstalled and never looked back.

@mogan: Yeah, i know, and thats why i'm not getting the DLCs, too much to chase, and so little time. Also, i saw someone with 2 shotguns and i was like WTF? I mean, if it was Universal remote would be alright, but it was 2 legenday shotyes...

@everson_rm: There are legendary kinetic sniper rifles and shotguns you can put in your first weapon slot, as well as the usual energy versions that mostly go in the second slot. There are a couple of exotic shotties and snipers that are still heavy weapons in the third slot, so you can technically roll with three different snipers or shotguns.

Universal Remote has, sadly, not be added to Destiny 2 yet.

@mogan: But they dont have difference in power? I mean, a white shotgun (primary on my destiny days) is the same as a purple (heavy) or green (energy) shotgun with the same impact? The "new weapon slots" makes no sense too me, and really put me away from destiny 2, So much that i was rooting for a Destiny 3, so i could get in again.

EDIT: All my shoguns in D2 are heavy weapon slot back in the day... they arent anymore (the D2 vanilla shottys)? I had a powerful raid exotic shotgun from calus, it is a special weapon now? I can choose wich slot i'll equip it?

EDIT 2: ty for your imput and time to answer me.

@everson_rm: I thiiink the damage dropped just a little bit on the shotguns/snipers/fusions/grenade launchers that got moved to kinetic and energy slots, but they also take green ammo and their reserves got buffed, so you can use them way more. Each weapon has a fixed slot, you can't choose to put a specific shotgun in any slot, but there are now specific shotguns that are for the kinetic slot, and ones for the energy slot. So you've got more flexibility in your load-outs.

The exotic shotgun you're talking about from the first raid (Legend of Acrius, I think) actually stayed a heavy weapon (along with Tractor Cannon), and still takes purple ammo. But with a couple of exotic exceptions, all the shotties, snipers, non-linear fusions, and single shot grenade launchers got moved to either the kinetic or energy weapon slots.

Sounds like they just don't have the funding to create a proper sequel now that their deal with Activision is over. But it's the only thing they could have done now to save the series. Trying to change the game through dlc doesn't work too well if the game is a pile of shit at its core. They'll be spending a lot of time trying to rebuild the game in that way.

@Atzenkiller: I imagine that dumping D2 to bring out D3 would just piss fans off because they'd have to start all over again. The current game is the best Destiny has been yet, and they've been able to make plenty of really meaningful changes to it through DLC and updates. But Destiny, whether it's 2 or 3, is always going to change over time. It's a loot shooter and a service game, it can't stay stagnant or it'll die out. MMOs always evolve over time; that's how they keep people playing.

@mogan: You always "start over" again with every game. And that's the great thing about them: you finally get to play something new instead of the same shit you've been playing for the last few years. But all mmo type games, like Destiny, also make your gear absolete regularly so you have to start the grind for it over anyway. If they didn't everyone would quickly acquire the best gear there is and then have no more reason to keep playing.

@Atzenkiller: Yeah, but one of the biggest complaints about Destiny 2 was that players of Destiny 1 lost all their stuff and progress.

Loot games have to start over, you’re right, but I think we need time between those resets. Bungie roller right from D1 to D2, and I think if they said D3 was coming in a year, it’d kill all of the momentum they’ve built up with D2 here.

@mogan: Well, those people are free to keep playing the same game then until they finally get tired of it. But like I said, with any major update you also always get new, better gear so your old stuff will become useless anyway. And complaining about having to start over because a new game came out sounds so dumb to me. What else is there to do anyway in these kinds of games but to grind for gear? Once you've got the best gear there's nothing left to do anymore, so what is it that would keep you playing then? Wanting to show off your awesome gear to other players, like you see people do in mmos, posing with their weapons or mounts in town while being afk 24/7?

I hate this release model, it's as bad as episodic games.
You only can play so far into it before you have to wait for the next 'part' to get released.

I'd be somewhat keen to see what is Activision-free Bungie doing with the game.

That said, I don't think I'll be seriously playing it again... if devs don't upsize the team to 4 players in co-op.

Seriously. I have 3 colleagues and we play together a lot - Division 1 and 2, Wildlands, L4D 1 and 2, others... incoming Breakpoint already queued in the pipeline. While we did play Destiny 2 for a while, it really irked us that we usually had to drop one of us (first come, first served, last come, no service) from most sessions.

Not major, maybe, but it made us choose other games over D2, whenever we were planning to play together.

If it's successful, I think this is a model that even "true" MMOs should copy. give us continuing story "seasons" instead of expansions that break everything you've worked on previously. I mean, I know THIS will break previous D2 systems, but I mean the progression should feel more continuous moving forward.

@Tekarukite: Personally, I think the beauty of Destiny is how progression, for lack of a better way of putting it, is "project based."

There isn't really an overarching purpose for most of the content, but there are things you can do to achieve different things. Exotic quests, pinnacle weapons, armor sets, whatever, you kind of decide what you want to go for.

It's refreshing not to have to work on your gearscore just to be able to participate in content, like so many other MMO's.

@Richardthe3rd: Okay, that's really well said. I appreciate that, too, and kind of reminds me of Warframe.

I think I was referring more to the way they are going to tell a story and make the game more organic. I'm excited to see what happens!

@Tekarukite: agreed on Warframe comparison.

I think they diverge in a few places, but progression involves very similar concepts. Warframe is another great game I dont play enough!

@teske4444: That was for the franchise as a whole, but I imagine that’s largely out the window now Bungie’s broken up with Activision.

Really though, the fact Destiny CAN change its plans and pivot to something better is one of the best things about Destiny and it being an ongoing service game.

@mogan: Did they make it any... better? I played for several months straight when it first came out, and it got old really, really quick when I realized that all the gear was the same, except for 3 stats. And you drop the tokens for getting end-game gear off trash mobs, essentially. Everything else was just superficial looks.

After getting max power level, the right legendary piece of gear, and the meta weapons (which, again, I worked for weeks to get from Crucible matches and then got the same weapon drops from tokens off trash mobs a few days later), I felt there was nothing else to do. Not even any point in gearing up for what D2 calls "raids" which are essentially just group puzzles.

@drastikk: Oh yeah, it’s real different now. In fact Armor specifically is getting another big overhaul with the next update. It’ll have a bunch of different stats and you’ll be able to customize all sorts of different perks and build out a gear set that radically changes how your character plays.

There’s also a bunch more quests for unique weapons, and several more kinds of end game activities. Tokens are less of a thing now, gear has randomized perks, weapons can be modded, you can unlock a third spec for each sub-class ... Destiny 2’s really come a long way since launch.

AND the base game and first two expansions are going free to play on Oct. 1, so if you haven’t played in a long time and want to check out where the game’s at, there’s no investment required.
