Destiny Dev Explains Why The Taken King Is Worth $40

There's a lot of content coming.

Destiny is getting a new expansion, called The Taken King, next month, and it'll cost $40, while the last two expansions cost $20 each. Developer Bungie recently explained why The Taken King is priced two times higher than the last two content drops.

In an IGN podcast, community manager Eric "Urk" Osborne laid out the reasoning behind charging $40 for The Taken King. According to him, the expansion includes much more than the past content packs, and its included content more than justifies the price tag.

"You've got a full campaign, [and] I think people are going to enjoy the cinematics, the characters, the missions. We're taking you to the Dreadnaught, to Phobos, up into colony ships. Nathan Fillion [Firefly, Halo 3: ODST] is talking to you, Lance Reddick [The Wire] is talking to you, it's good stuff."

Osborne continued: "I don't have any trouble saying that The Taken King is well more than twice as much content as the Dark Below. The story's great, there's seven Crucible multiplayer maps, there's three brand-new Strikes, and they're the best Strikes we've delivered to date... We've got the Dreadnaught, which is not just a big new destination to explore, it's really deep and layered, there's tons of little secrets and things you can collect... [and] riddles and clues and stories and quests and quest logs and more guns and more gear and exotics. We've got three revised Strikes that are existing [Destiny Year One] Strikes but with the Taken infused in them to change them up for the first time. We've got the [King's Fall] Raid, we've got a bunch of stuff we aren't talking about but will about our in-game content."

For comparison, the Dark Below pack featured a short campaign, a Strike, a Raid, and three Crucible maps. House of Wolves, the most recently released pack, had three Crucible maps, a new cooperative mode called the Prison of Elders, a Strike, a second social space, and a handful of story missions.

The Taken King launches on September 15, and it'll come alongside a host of changes to the base Destiny formula. The Light level system has been scrapped, replaced by more traditional experience-based progression. The quest and bounty systems in the game are also getting a big overhaul. In addition, Bungie is replacing Peter Dinklage with Nolan North as the voice of the Ghost companion in the game.

HAHAHAH twice the content? is he smoking wacky backy?
this expansion is a cut and paste of what we have already paid for, yes we get the dreadnaught.... but pretty much everywhere else is visiting the same locations we have been too a mere 2 thousand times, they couldn't even be that bothered to add any real new enemy types, by the way yes I am aware the taken can fall under that category, but they are the same enemies but ghostly and split... plus Bungie/Activison you need a lesson in business practice, I bought your original game with promise and hyping that this was the start of the next gen gaming, this was a lie, the game I was sold had no where near the content we were promised, the story was devoid of anything, I finished that game none the wiser to the lore of this universe than when I started. yes I know whats coming, but they have the grimore you can read it all up on..... no no no no no no
I don't want to have to leave the game to learn about it, you should be giving me that access in the game, none the less I digress because what has truly made me livid at your practice is the pure fact, I have chosen not to buy your taken king because I expected it to be no better and I couldn't justify the price, yet I signed onto destiny today just for a quick play and you have locked 60% of the content! "We've got three revised Strikes that are existing [Destiny Year One] Strikes but with the Taken infused in them to change them up for the first time" so basically buy this new expansion or you wont get your original game you paid for.... I spent money on the original game I bought the DLC's I am entitled to the strikes over level 20 how dare you take that away from me and put it behind a paywall as well as that you have done the same to multiplayer again taking away most of the game types!?!?? I have basically a demo now because of your business practice..... Bungie you have tarnished your reputation, its worth less than the mud too so many now very disappointing, activison I expect nothing less from your company now.

I think it's bullshit that I payed around $80-90 for digital deluxe version and have to pay for taken king while they are selling the taken king with the other dlc for less.

@darksparda4That's how I felt when BF3 Premium came out. I paid for every DLC, then suddenly it was all available for $70, half what I paid. Never played BF since.

The thing Gamespot have missed that so many American interviews, and admit it they are the only ones that get to interview Bungie, is, TTK is begin pushed for £40 in the UK .

So why US games are complain that about paying $40 we are forced to pay the equivalent of $65 for a digital download.

Now I have tried to contact people at both Bungie and Activision on this matter, and guess what no one wants to give me the time of day. Why?

Because:

A) They know they are ripping off UK consumers.
B) They know with a base of around 3 million gamers, people will buy it anyway.

So why should they care? They don't, and they also know there is no legislation in place to make these companies price fairly.

So we have to rely on people like Gamespot, IGN etc to pressure for these answers, but get nothing as they only think about their own shores. I understand why, but they also have fans on my side of the pond that want answers.

Now I think TTK is probably worth $40 which equates to £26 roughly, but not the £40 we are being charges.

@dominic1998: Aren't all your games priced that high? So it isn't really Bungie or Activition fault that people in the UK pay more.

I looked at it two ways; first is against the DlC and the second against the base game. If I didn't get the last two dlc's through the whatever bundle I wouldn't have gotten them. I don't think they were worth $20 combined let alone apiece. That being said, they said we think TTK has more than twice the content as the other dlc, which to me is saying I once had 2 pennies now I have 4. Still not a lot of value for the money.

Secondly against the base game, there is no way this has as much content as even half the original game. And that prices it below $30.

Overall I did have a good time playing, but this is too much money for a game that is going to become Destiny 2 next year and have nothing to do with Destiny 1. That is going to be a whole lot more money on one game.

All the dissenters can keep hating. It won't matter. The expansion will still sale well, and millions will still be playing Destiny. With a solid group of friends to play with, I've loved this game since it came out. And I plan to love it for years to come. So keep on hating.

I say why it's worth spending £40 on a full better game like Uncharted 4 or Fallout 4

Because Destiny is nothing more than a fucking cash cow for Bobby K and the dicks Bungie I'll keep the game and play with what I've got Crota, VoG and HoW and thats it they are not getting any more cash out of me, god I would love to slap Luke Smith in the face the ignorant prick.

I think part of the reason for the price of this expansion is to pay for the rerecorded dialog of Ghost.

How can you compare the Taken King to the DLC. Sure it makes the $40 look better, but you need to compare it the the base game because their calling it an expansion. So look at what we got for $60 and what their offering for $40, and its not even half, and with the history of tiny dlc, how can they expect people to be confident. Going to wait for the reviews before committing this time.

@darkelf83: Can't take anyone seriously who doesn't know the difference between "their" (which is a word used to describe ownership of something to multiple people - such as, "That is their house, and their car."), and "they're" (which is a contraction of the words "they are" - such as, "They're calling it an expansion," and, "They're offering for $40."). Maybe if you and those like you had more than a 3rd grade education they wouldn't think it'd be so easy to rip you off.

So glad i won't be buying this as I sold this pile of crap game after 5 hours of absolute boredom / repetitiveness / emptiness / shitness!!

Bungie / Activision should be ashamed of themselves for releasing such an utter crap of a game at release date and now making their customers pay ridiculous prices for DLC that was probably originally meant for the release date of the game but they rushed it out either way!

@Speedballer2000: how exactly is THIS DLC meant for the original game?! I have no idea. DLC is new additions to the game. You are like a 10 year old. Stop complaining. I've played plenty of worse games. You know like every COD these days at launch. Complain about that. This game is far better. This game is to be meant to play with friends. Like the Raids, Strikes, Prison of Elders, and Crucible. The people complaining are either broke or have no friends to play with.

I new it was time to sell after spending 5 hrs "with friends" (as you say i have none) and they are talking to me in the mic while playing the game obviously and wondering why i am not replying to them because i had literally fallen asleep because the game was so F**KING BORING!

If you enjoy it and want to give these money hungry perpetrators your money for DLC that should have been part of the game to begin with then i'm fine with that and you should be too (sought of).

@jimbo1525: Since you don't have any idea, let me help you out. The Game has what 12 to 15 missions hardly any of which tie together to form any coherent story. Now comes this new DLC that now has a "Full" campaign. So either, Bungie is lying about how this DLC has a story and campaign or This is the story that was gutted from game to be turned into DLC or they decided to actually pay somebody to write a story. Regardless, A lot of people are still pissed that they spent $60 on such a hollow game from a developer that had a great reputation for making a solid game. I got over it. But a lot of people still have not.

@spartanx169x: You obviously wouldn't still be complaining on a Destiny forum if you were over it. Thats a Fact. I'm glad they keep adding great content that means the game has Replayability. If they stop making content for it then the game becomes a game you may not play again. In the end, only broke kids will complain.

Bungie gets crap for it, yet Activision, Treyarch, Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer.... whoever is making that pile now, have been doing this for like 10 years... but unlike Destiny, where that extra money and additional game content gets added to the main game, Activision makes you toss everything you have done so far away and start over every single year... oh, and they also charge you 40-50 bucks after your initial purchase for more content, that again, will be thrown aside in 6 months by the time all that is out. People just won't be happy, no matter what. Cause internet.

So glad I only redboxed this game.

The most offensive part of this whole thing is the base game which really is just a skeleton of a game costs $60. It clearly wasn't finished. Now through expansions which, in all honesty, haven't actually fleshed out the main story but just kind of adds to the "stuff happening" aspect of it, the game has more than doubled in price. I haven't had fun in Destiny since the first couple of months it was released. Instead of enhancing the story and giving me an actual motivation to do what I'm doing it just feels like lather rinse repeat and unless the main story gets addressed, no expansion is really going to bring me back.

Only thing that is making people pissed (in my Circuits atleast) is not that it is pricy(even if it kinda is abit over the top for a expansion.) but that a expansion was released just Before summer and now Another one comes out right after summer and double the price. It is too much frikkin Money in such a frikkin short amount of time. Like we all are made of Money, we are not. And the fact that september has alot of BIG game titles coming out, where is the appeal to buy a expansion of a game when there recently already were a new release of content? I love Destiny but im not buying this expansion, in september my focus will be MGS and Mad Max.

And it is cool that Nathan is voicing in the game I like some of his work, he wouldve easily fit as drake in a uncharted Movie, atleast when he was younger. But I bet if they made a Movie it would probably be with some overpriced actor that doesnt even look similiar to the character xD.

@ember_to_flame: Mad Max is not gonna be good. Games made after movies are never good. Metal Gear is a toss up not sure on that one yet. This is $40. It's not a full price game. It's been a while since the last DLC actually, and if they waited even longer less people would care to buy it. This expansion is twice the size of the last 2 DLC's. Well worth the money in my opinion.

@ember_to_flame: Less than WoW, or origin/ea titles with their dlcs. Though nothing compared to DOA5 dlcs, just very skimpy clothing 50 euros, and there're 3 dlc packs of those.

Destiny dlcs are in the middle ground, they are substantial and come ever so often, considering how much there is actually do to. And you have no clue how much bigger the Take King is compared two the first dlcs, so much that the first two are just dlcs and the taken king is an expansion. I'll give you reddit post that actually lists what will be in there so far.

https://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/3frkbk/game_informer_ttk_info_dump_megathread/

  • Level cap raised to 40
  • Cryptarch rewards from engrams are now more in line with the type of Engram you got
  • The second half of the Taken King apparently starts once you reach the Endgame (Questlines throughout the Destiny Universe!)
  • Your Ghost can now scan objects to offer more insight into the world's lore (IE, scan a Cabal soldier, gives you info on their Military Regiment)
  • You can now turn in Bounties without returning to the Bounty Board!
  • Intelligence, Discipline, and Strength now have numerical "tiers" that decide their influence on your character
  • A new progress system where you sacrifice an existing piece of gear that belongs to the same slot (? Kind of confused about this and this is literally how it's read)
  • The Tower and its NPCs have been retooled to offer quests/story/insight into the world as you level up your character from 1-40 (!!!! Cryptarch, Gunsmith, etc questlines!!!!)
  • Entire base game/expansions retooled for narrative and access purposes to make much more sense (Example: after meeting the Queen for the first time, the Reef is open to you)
  • Subclasses, old and new, have their own questlines (?)
  • GUNSMITH NOW HAS A REP AND THE HIGHER YOUR REP, THE MORE "PROTOTYPE WEAPONS" HE OFFERS FOR YOU TO "TEST IN THE FIELD" FOR REP. Reaching a certain Rep with Banshee allows you access to "Armsday", a weekly purchase that allows you to ORDER LEGENDARY GUNS with GLIMMER.
  • Crucible and Vanguard Marks are gone! ALL HAIL THE UNIVERSAL "LEGENDARY MARKS" FOR LEGENDARY VENDOR PURCHASES!
  • Class specific materials needed for upgrading are gone! Hadronic Essences, Armor Plating, etc. have been replaced by "Armor Materials", making it easier to utilize materials on one character towards another to progress them.
  • NO LONGER FORCED TO WEAR A CLASS ITEM WHEN LEVELLING UP NEW MONARCHY, DEAD ORBIT, OR FWC (you pledge to each faction!)
  • You can turn in materials to these above factions for a Rep Gain (like the Speaker with Glimmer)
  • NEW SYSTEM THAT RECORDS ALL SHADERS AND, ONCE YOU'VE GAINED IT, YOU'RE ABLE TO CHOOSE FROM THEM ANYTIME YOU VISIT THE SYSTEM (also shows you the Shaders you don't have AND HOW TO OBTAIN THEM!)
  • Same above system with Emblems!
  • New Exotics are tied into Questlines!
  • RAIL GUN FUSION RIFLE HEAVY WEAPON EXOTIC HNNNNNG YE SON YOU READ THAT RIGHT.
  • Eight new Crucible Maps
  • Weekly Crucible and Trials bounties! Complete all 5 of the Weeklies for the week, and you gain access to a 6th that has a chance to reward you either a Legendary or Exotic!
  • ENDGAME THAT EXPLORES PREVIOUS ENDGAME (Vault of Glass) AND FURTHERS TO STORY EVEN AFTER FINISHING THE STORY MISSIONS
  • Bosses/mechanics that aren't purely Bullet Sponge-y!
  • Crucible has a "mercy rule" (Thank you /u/optimal_ac)

@boogie25: Sorry to burst your bubble, but it's Activision puppeteering Bungie into this, If you've paid any attention at all you'd have noticed the 500 Million USD Activision put into the game to basically have full control over it, and when the folks at Activision talk about it they straight up make it sound like they intended it to be a cash cow. check out the interviews about the Taken King Collector's Edition! If I'm not mistaken he literally says that people will throw their money at the screen for stupid little mechanics like extra dance animations! He later apologized for it but still he shouldn't have even gone there in the first place!

@boogie25 No, Bungie chooses to work with Activision. Everyone knows what Activision is like. They can't play the victim here. There isn't a publisher out there that would refuse to work with Bungie. Bungie picked one of the greediest.

At this point I've completed all the year 1 merits for Destiny, still no Gallerhorn lol I probably won't find it till it's nerfed either

Funny thing is if you wait they'll include it all together super cheap like they do for all new players in a silly bundle with more features than any current player will ever get for significantly less than the current players paid lol (looking at you taken king)

Sorry Bungie, but your promises mean nothing to me after the hollow shell of a game you released almost a year ago. Less than nothing after the overpriced, anemic DLC you have released since.

When you have to defend your game literally every time you release new content for it, there's a problem.

that is not the problem for most users, the issue is the Legendary Edition which includes the base content, the first two expansions and the taken king are being sold for the same price,

so all the users who purchased the dlcs are being screwed over, me i don't care since i opted out on giving Bungie anymore money after my initial purchase, but since i found a £35 deal on simplygames.com for the legendary edition, i'm a happy man hehe

Just to add to my previous comment. It annoys me we have to pay $60 in the UK but we pay $80 to $90 for a new game. I think it's worth the money if you are a fan, I personally will be buying it and I'm looking forward to seeing where we are taken as the game evolves. If you don't want to buy it, then don't :) at least there are no micro transaction like COD, Battlefield, FIFA UT, Madden UT, Forza, Batman the list goes on....ESO etc, etc, I for one have spent more on other games overall!!
