Destiny Gets Microtransactions

New emotes are optional purchases and will not impact the core game.

Bungie is introducing microtransactions to its sci-fi shooter Destiny. Detailed on the Bungie website, players will be able to purchase new emotes using Silver, a new in-game currency which will be purchasable using real-world money via the console's relevant store (so Xbox Live for Xbox consoles, and PSN store for PlayStation consoles).

Returning NPC Tess Everis will offer 18 new emotes for players to buy using Silver from October 13. Bungie has assured that the emotes are optional and "won't impact the action game in any way." Pricing information and descriptions for each emote will be available on the day. All players will receive some free Silver to purchase "an emote or two" when they go on sale.

Bungie explained that the new items are being used to provide support for the live team for another year as it expands and creates more content for players.

Tess Everis returns to Destiny with new in-game items to sell "courtesy of Eververse Trading Company"--a title Bungie previously filed trademarks for. The trademark applications each covered a long list of things ranging from video game software to Halloween clothing and action figures.

October 13 is also the same day competitive multiplayer mode Iron Banner makes a three-day return. Match rewards will include weapons and armor, with drop rates higher than they previously were. Check out our gamespace for more on the recent updates as well as upcoming new content for Destiny.

Lol @ people that actualy think this is all it's going to be. That's how Activision works. Starts off with optional crap, and then it just gets worse.

Though, I am truly amazed the game didn't have microtransactions from the start. They must have had this whole DLC scam planned and figured they could last a year without 'em. **** this game, **** Bungie, **** activision.

Wow... is this the world's most expensive online* game or what? Gotta pay for the base game ($60)*, gotta pay for the three expansions ($20+$20+$40), and now emotes. Oh right. I forgot the PS+ requirement for playing with others (which is $50 if you take the 12 months option, and you better do if you don't want to waste money. or put the game on a shelf and let it gather dust until you want to pay for the 3 months option twice in a year). I am not bashing the game, but it seems expensive as heck.

*:Yes, the game is online, just not massively online.

*:Or does the base game (and the other expansions) comes with The Taken King when you buy it? Cause if it doesn't, it's a wallet buster game. Even more than DC Universe. I kinda liked the demo (it's pretty much a copy of Borderlands, is it not?), but there ain't no way I'll pay that much for a game that isn't a limited edition right now.

I hope it turns free to play without screwing things (Warframe is fair so far). Because a game that's buy to play, AND sells emotes seems weird so far. Either they turn F2P or they better put more things into their updat--- DLCs (from the description I read on PS Store, it seemed like a small amount of content for $20...).

@kaminobenimizu: The Taken King does come with The Dark Below and House of Wolves. But I digress because that only matters if you never bought the game before. The people who have been playing from day one have paying a lot to play. I don't have a huge problem with their DLC plan, $20 every 3 or 4 months isn't a bad deal if you like the game.

What I do have an issue with is microtransactions of any kind in a full priced retail game, and the general middle finger Bungie had been giving the long-time players.

A lot of you Destiny fans defending this really make me laugh.

and the fact that you try to compare it to MMO's is even more hilarious.

"Its opotional!"

you all clearly are suffering from Battered Wife Syndrome.

Look...if Activision is still beating you and touching your kids, blink once for yes, twice for no.

okay?

go!

@Chernnunos: in terms of business ethics and pricing models, it pretty much is.

Also, I keep seeing you type voluntary. Every game is voluntary, just like every car or house or doughnut or ANYTHING you buy is voluntary. Thats not an excuse. This is big business preying on the stupid.. I don't know why anyone would consider this ok. Why is it ok for this game to cost double what other better games cost? I mean the Witcher 3 is 10 for 10 and has tons of FREE DLC, Not to mention they fix problems the gamers care about promptly, This game has bad customer service, horrendous pricing, more cash milking schemes than the federal government, piss poor priorities, and still has a product that is not even close to what was originally advertised 2 years later.

Why are you defending this game in every post? I mean how are you not smelling the bullshit? Are you trying to convince yourself that supporting this game isn't a bad idea? No one else is buying it...

I can only assume the people who support this game are either

A. stupid

B. So rich they don't care about principles

C. Are spending their mommy and daddies money

Games like this are HURTING the gaming market. They are setting foundations for later companies to copy because people like you, and the other fanboys are buying into it. I can promise you there isnt an executive at this company that said "Hey lets add a cash shop! The gamers would really like that!"... It's more in the fashion of "Hey lets add a cash shop! Its really easy, it will make us alot of money, and the users have already proven that they are stupid enough to buy it!"

I mean they added cash content and already had an excuse waiting...

It's ok to like this game, don't feel bad for enjoying it... Its fun to some people - thats ok. Just don't pretend that the companies business model is anything other than greed.

also/ sorry for wall of text. I just have alot of input on this matter.

@ryanbayka: just wondering, are you proud of the time you have dedicated to Destiny? I ask because I know a 300+ hour player that is ashamed of the time he has wasted doing the same thing over and over. I know one guy that hides his game time because he has over 600 (it's closer to 700) hours in the game when there is only 50 something hours (thats how much time i have in Destiny and ive leveled 2 characters) of content to play until you repeat yourself twice over! Everyone I know that has dedicated ridiculous amounts of time to the game are ashamed of themselves when it is shown to them that Bungie and Activision targeted addiction (a disgusting action of itself, addiction should never be exploited) at its most simple level. It takes an easily pleased, simple mind to become absorbed in the mechanisms that Bungie created. Bungie themselves admitted this.

Edit* I don't ask this to shame you, I am genuinely interested in psychology and the psychological reaction of gamers and guilt as regards time spent in digital world's.

@BovineDivine: No, if I dig it and have money, I'll buy it. But if it's going to the hard work of keeping the game live and in working order... and adding more to it... then shit I don't mind spending it. If in fact that's the truth... and I think it is. pay to win however, total crap. Especially after you've already payed to play.

and the money that bought the game went to the making of the initial game... keeping that game up and running and evolving takes more time and money. and considering I've had like a literal week worth, or something like that, of entertainment; the price point isn't bad. A movie costs almost 20 bucks... that's 3 hours tops. I don't get everyone crying over game and DLC costs. Especially when there so many good free to play games out, if you don't want to spend money.

@basswolfe86: your money isn't going toward keeping the game live or for new content, you will be charged for new content whether that content deserves a price or not.

What you doing isn't supporting Bungie, what you are doing is creating a negative gaming environment. Your actions directly encourage Bungie and all other devs to charge exorbitant prices for content that doesn't deserve or require the ticketed price.

It's your money and you can obviously spend it how you want but you have to be aware that your purchasing this type of product makes gaming a worse 'world'.

In the near future you will experience a method/product for which you will be deeply shocked and you will be angry about it. Old school gamers like me are already there!

It angers me that I now have to pay for built in content that used to be included in my original purchase because you youngsters don't know the damage you do to this industry when you not only support but defend actions like these.

@madMARTYNmarsh: I guess all I can say is I completely disagree with you, and I'm not a youngster, I've been playing video games since the 80's. Games are not that expensive and neither is DLC; considering what you're getting out of it. And if you don't like the game, then sell it and get some money back.

And that "content that used to be included in my original purchase," was not in your original purchase. I love all the cheap conspiracy theorists thinking that the whole original game was there when it launched.... it wasn't. Yea someone went through and found pieces of the content we are getting now, but that's because these thing take years to make and refine. Ideas change. of course Activision is greedy as hell, but you got what you paid for. The developers at Bungie are not the ones making the millions. The small team that started is now bigger, and I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt that, that's where the dough is going. I have no proof and neither do you, until we can get a glimpse of their quarterly statements. Idk... i get what you trying to say... i just think you're wrong.

The game "world" is great. Not the whole thing.. but for the most part its awesome. And these new "silver" transactions... its cosmetic. Fun stuff that you don't need to buy. Now, the day they offer an actual game component for real money.. I'm out. That would be horrible, but I can't imagine Bungie, or even Activision for that matter, is that stupid.

I did a little math btw.. Destiny has cost be about a $1 for every 10 hours of play so far. So technically is 60 times cheaper than the majority of the other ones I own. That's not to say the others are a rip off... I'm just getting a real good deal on this one.

Year two destiny sucks. I mean I fucking worked so hard to get my thorn, badjuju, ghorn, and and other. But it's all crappie now. Why the he'll they nerf those weapons when even blue weapons will do more damage in pvp, poe. I'm a year one player and and I got shit from playing so hard and finishing my moment of trimph. So start over with same shit. My own weapons I hv to buy em again with stupid legendary marks. Every strike requires team, or u r fucked. There r many flaws in this dlc. How many of u guys agree? Or disagree?

@spiderjensen: Most of the year two exotics are either rehashes of the year one stuff or just suck. Theres nothing yet that jumps out of the crowd like ghorn did.

And thats my main issue. Instead of giving us guns that are "better" than the year one guns, they just nerfed them. Its like a burger shop that makes the most amazing burgers but wants to sell pizza too. Instead of putting just as much effort into the pizza, they just put dog shit into the burgers. So now you have to buy the pizza because no one wants to eat dog shit.

@EcksTheory: don't be surprised when you never see a weapon like Ghorn again. Bungie stated that they didn't like how Ghorn had become a prerequisite factor to being included in lobbies.

I doubt bungie will ever make such a distinct weapon again.
