Diablo 2: Resurrected Remasters Blizzard's RPG Classic On PC And Consoles

Blizzard's 2000 classic dungeon-crawler is coming back with cross-play; here's the latest trailer and screenshots showing the return of Diablo 2.

The rumors are true. Blizzard is developing a remaster of its classic PC game, Diablo II, and it's called Diablo II: Resurrected. Blizzard describes it as the "definitive remastering" of the game, along with its Lord of Destruction expansion. The fact that a remaster exists is a surprise, given that the original files were said to be actually lost by the original creators.

But indeed it is happening, and it's on the way to PC and console. Resurrected launches in 2021 and it will be released on PC, Xbox One/Series X|S, PlayStation 4/5, and Nintendo Switch, with cross-play between platforms. Additionally, progression can move between platforms. As rumored, the game is being developed by Tony Hawk studio Vicarious Visions, which was recently folded into Blizzard Entertainment.

Now Playing: Diablo II Resurrected Reveal Trailer | BlizzCon 2021

Resurrected changes Diablo II in a big way. Gone are the 2D sprites in favor of a "full 3D physically-based rendering," featuring dynamic lighting and revamped animations. The game supports resolutions up to 4K depending on your platform.

Blizzard also announced that all 27 minutes of cinematics are getting shot-for-shot remakes "from the ground up." The soundtrack has been updated, too, with support for Dolby 7.1.

"Diablo II was a pivotal game for Blizzard and millions of players around the world. With Diablo II: Resurrected, we're excited to bring this classic back to PC and also to consoles--with cross-progression on supported platforms--so that players can relive their memories, or experience Diablo II's timeless gameplay for the first time, on their platform of choice," Blizzard president J. Allen Brack said. "With the new high-resolution audio and video in Diablo II: Resurrected, the game is as fun and engrossing today as it was twenty years ago."

No Caption Provided

Resurrected also has a classic mode of sorts, a la Halo's Anniversary games, where you can press a button to switch between modern and retro graphics. The game's trademark gameplay, "quirks and all," will be present in Resurrected, along with some quality-of-life improvements such as the introduction of a shared stash.

Diablo II: Resurrected launches later in 2021 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC, along with last-gen consoles. A technical alpha test is in the works for PC, and you can sign up for it on the Diablo 2 website.

Guess it looks a little improved....but I still have high doubts it'll be anywhere near as good as the Mods were for D2....once we got tired of the tiny inventory and stash, etc, etc, etc, Eastern Sun improved D2 by a million times. You can still play that also. We did for a decade. I hope I'm proven wrong, but I doubt this will fix enough things to even come close to sniffing how good Eastern Sun was.

Ok I'm in.

And now all I am wondering is if I should make the switch to console or revert back to my PC dungeon-crawling ways.

@Utnayan: This time its being handled by Vicarious Visions so hopefully it turns out well. From their developers interview, it seems like they are going down the right path. Ofcourse, holding all reservations until its out but I am abit more optimistic than I am with the WC3 reforged.

This should be nothing but good news but it's actually causing spiraling. D2 was great and the prospect of getting a new version with pretty 3d visuals and who knows what else shouldn't make people say "oh god, what are they going to do to it?". It shouldn't make people go through the list of times Blizzard and other companies screwed the public with awful releases lacking content and loaded with microtransactions. It is though and Blizzard is largely to blame for it. Look what they did to warcraft. Then look at their stance on China. Don't pre order this and don't buy it til you know exactly what they've done to it and know exactly what you're buying. They don't deserve the benefit of the doubt.

I fell for the whole Warcraft III Reforged marketing and promises and was sorely disappointed in how it all rolled out and played. Honestly, it was nothing more than to capitalize on the name and nostalgic value of the franchise. What is going to make this any different? The amount of money they are asking for a "re-tread" game, which is as much as a new game, is a bit absurd. Ever since Activision got their hands on Blizzard, the games have become more of a "give us all your money" rather than "we hope the players enjoy the game".

I know that Diablo II is technically a superior game, but I would love to see a remake of the first, succinct, scary and well made little game. For me, it's my favorite. Just lovely violence and horror without filler.

Damn, imagine if they had cared enough to give StarCraft "Remastered" a treatment like this. Guess you could argue those hi-res 2D sprites look good enough and 3D would ruin the character of the game, but they also didn't even bother to change the old cutscenes

@jhcho2: Since Diablo 4's likely a long ways off, and I don't know all that much about it yet, I'm probably more interested in a D2 remake right now than D4, year.

The big concern to me is if it will be always online.

@J_P-: Nope, they said there will be offline play. You'll just need to go online to verify that your copy is legit, but after that you won't get bothered by it.

@J_P-: Yeah, I only play offline single player, so hopefully there will be an option for playing without a continuous internet connection.

@J_P-: Same here. I'd play a D2 remaster all day, but Blizzard touting the cross-platform saves thing makes me wonder if they're going to make it always online (which may be a dealbreaker for me...I can still play my D2 classic with no online requirements, after all).

I do get what some are saying as lately there were some games that was so hyped it turned out to be false. I am praying that this version does all that was in the original D2. It looks good in 3D and I rather play the new one than reinstalling the old one even with the glide tool as the new version will use the newer cards better.

Never played a Diablo game but did enjoy a 'clone' called Champions of Norrath: Everquest and its sequel. Think I stuck with that because it let me make my own character and had a lot of variety in classes/ races.

While the OG DII looks like it has some good sprites I assume running the game is a hassle in on itself, like a lot of DOS games. So wonder if this may be the chance to give that Champions predecessor a go. Assuming ActBliz doesn't ReForge the game?

@RSM-HQ: sounds like the best chance. Diablo 2 is the best in the series. 3 being just boring.

Is this basically just a graphics facelift with some tweaked audio? I would be up for it, but certainly not for anything close to $60. Anyhow, it would be a shame if there is no additional content such as missions or new areas.

@the_hunger: ? $60 would be cheap. Nothing since the original Diablo or Wolfenstein 3D/Doom has been original. You've all been bamboozled.

Just goes to show that you shouldn't believe anything Blizzard says. And that the source code is not needed for anything. Modders can modify every single aspect of any game without it, yet some folks like to make it sound as if you couldn't even rerelease a game in its original form if you no longer have the original copy and source code. When you can still download the game in many places online.

But I wonder what they're gonna change about it. Are they gonna keep everything as it is aside from the graphics? I'm sure they will make some changes to the skills, at least some that they couldn't easily do before. But otherwise they were talking about how they'd have to change everything for a remaster, and that that's why we'll never get to see one. So I guess they chose to just release it as it is with prettied up graphics now because there's been so much demand for it.

It's looking good.

Fact that it is being handled by Vicarious Vision also helps a lot.

That Tony Hawk remake was great.

very excited by this.. i shouldn't be.. I, like many, played the heck out of Diablo 2, but very much looking forward to this when it releases.

it's telling too... I think Blizzard did this because Diablo IV is still a long way from being done. that's ok.. I'd rather have it right.

Remember when they said all the same things about the WarCraft 3 remake and then failed to deliver basically every single promise?

What makes you think this will be a single iota different?

Vicarious Visions did a great job with Tony Hawk, but with Blizzard controlling the shots at what point do they go "eh, its good enough push it out" like the CDPR corpo team? mmhmm
