Right now, the Xbox One version of Diablo III runs in 900p, and it's likely that will be the resolution come launch in August. But it's possible that the game's visual fidelity could be bumped up to 1080p to bring it on par with the PlayStation 4 iteration sometime down the road, Blizzard Entertainment senior producer Julia Humphreys said in a new interview with AusGamers.
How could that be? Humphreys said "it's possible" that, thanks to the Xbox One June SDK (an update for developers that boosts console GPU power), resolution could be improved later on through a patch. "We'd just need to look at what that would require, and we've actually [talked to] Microsoft about that," she said.
It's not an unprecedented move for a game to see its native resolution increased via a post-launch patch. That was the case for the PS4 version of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and the Xbox One version of Trials Fusion.
As for the PS4 version of Diablo III, Humphreys again confirmed that the game runs in native 1080p at a "super-solid" 60 frames-per-second; that's the same frame rate as the Xbox One version. Diablo III's textures and "everything else" are also the same between platforms, senior level designer Matthew Berger added.
Diablo III comes to PS4 and Xbox One in August through the Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition, which includes the main game and the Reaper of Souls expansion pack. The Ultimate Evil Edition will also be available on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
