Diablo 4 Announced At BlizzCon With Gameplay And Cinematic Trailers

The next installment is returning to the series' darker roots.

Blizzard kicked off BlizzCon 2019 with a big reveal: Diablo IV. The next installment in the beloved dungeon crawler series is in development for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and it looks to embrace the franchise's darker origins. More details are expected during an ongoing panel focused on Diablo IV, but we already know quite a bit about the basics.

The reveal came by way of an extended cinematic trailer, which set the tone for the game's more horrific atmosphere. Game director Luis Barriga took the stage following the trailer to shed more light on the title. Barriga summed up Diablo IV in three words: darkness, world, and legacy.

Now Playing: Diablo 4, Overwatch 2, & Expansions Announced At BlizzCon 2019 - GS News Update

"The first thing you will notice is we are going back to the franchise's darker roots," Barriga said. "It'll mean blood and gore. It'll mean occult symbols and rituals. More importantly, it'll mean victories are neither clean nor guaranteed."

The world of Diablo will also be more fleshed out in IV. "We've only seen glimpses into Sanctuary in previous Diablo games, but those glimpses have enthralled us and captured our imaginations," Barriga said. "With Diablo IV, we want to put the world of Sanctuary front and center. We want every character, every monster, every faction to have a sense of place."

Sanctuary is more than just a backdrop in Diablo IV. "The world is also how you'll experience most of our game. It is there you'll find enemy camps and friendly towns alike. It is also where you'll find players to interact with them, whether it's to trade with them, group with them, or--should you choose to do so--murder each other in PvP zones."

Barriga then shared the first gameplay trailer for Diablo IV. The game looks reminiscent of Diablo II, with an isometric perspective and more realistic art style than Diablo III. Three classes have been confirmed thus far: Sorceress (relies on fire, ice, and lightning magic in long-range combat); Barbarian (relies on swords, clubs, and axes in close-range combat); and Druid (relies on lightning, wind, and transformation magic in mid-range combat).

Diablo IV was actually leaked ahead of its BlizzCon 2019 announcement. German magazine GameStar published an advertisement for The Art of Diablo, a book that includes over 500 pieces of artwork from the franchise. The advertisement shows that the book includes art from Diablo, Diablo II, Diablo III, and Diablo IV--revealing the existence of the fourth game weeks ahead of Blizzard's official announcement. Then, the day before BlizzCon, Reddit user PracticalBrush12--who has a track history for reliably leaking Diablo content--released most of Diablo IV's details.

A June 2019 report stated that Blizzard cancelled a Starcraft first-person shooter in order to focus on developing Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2, the latter of which is rumored to be announced at BlizzCon 2019. Blizzard has not confirmed whether the report is true.

Last year, fans speculated Diablo IV would be announced at BlizzCon 2018. That ended up not being the case, and Blizzard instead revealed it had been working on a Diablo Immortal, a mobile game.

@Shantmaster_K: no one needs to play Diablo 3, ever.

Try Path of Exile, Wolcen or Grim Dawn instead. ;)

The online only game play is almost ruining the countless hours of D3 I have enjoyed. This was a true source of happiness for me that is now tainted, as if you could take away from D3's awesomeness. Now I like D3 less as a result of this D4 announcement. I dont know how they managed to put a bad taste in my mouth over what was quite possibly the best game ever created...........But they did. Thanks for ruining my gaming enjoyment. In order to live with this I may have to post a comment daily or weekly at the least.

If I had 3 thumbs it would 3 thumbs down for online play only. I religously play Diablo 3 with every spare moment of free time I have. Still to this day I only play Diablo 3. It is by far the most fantastic game I have ever seen and it never gets old. However I do not game on line. The news of it being online only is not only disappointing it is truly heart breaking. Looks like I will be doomed to Diablo 3 for life or be forced to find a new game series to get into. This makes me want to cry. I can not express my sorrow over this enough. Perhaps its time to give up gaming forever. This sucks... :(

@ickzuu: Diablo 3 is online already... if you want a better ARPG experience try Torchlight 2, Grim Dawn or Wolcen, all of them offline, 2 of them with even better graphics and environment, and all are inspired on the best ARPG even in these days: Diablo 2.

If you want to play older ARPGs (but which still at the top level today), try Sacred 1 (also the 2 feels good), Dungeon Siege 1 &2 or Titan Quest. They also have tons of mods to make them virtually unlimited.

Blizzard confirmed there will not be any offline play. You will have to be online to play D4 so that right there is why I will not be buying it:P

"in development for PS4, Xbox One, and PC"

RPGs, Strategy and many other genres which shine on PC, when designed simultaneously for consoles feel as a simple console game. That was the main problem in Diablo 3. Even when was launched on PC without announcing console versions, we was able to feel that was capped to fit on consoles. So simple, so insipid, so 'all audiences', not enough 'Diablo'...

This happened in each case I meet: Divinity 2, Dragon Age 2, Sacred 3, Dungeon Siege 3, etc, the same developers said in many cases "we were limited by the console versions".

The opposite happened when they designed only with PC in mind: Dragon Age Origins, Pillars of Eternity, Divinity Original Sin, Path of Exile, Grim Dawn. Superb on PC and then, if ported, unplayable on consoles, too complex to work with controller.

Well... I hadn't too high expectations with Blizzard anyway...

@Antarte: Erm... You can take Divinity 2 off that list.

Yes, I've played both D:OS games on both PC and console. In both cases, PC version is absolutely superior, but the console port is unmatched by all other console ports. The D:OS control systems are brilliantly designed.

Otherwise, I somewhat agree with your main point. (There's a slight issue of "go look at D3's dev & release schedule, and then go look at the X360 release schedule for the port" that leaves your first part factually-challenged, but it's still a good point for the other games.)

@Pyrosa: That is a rare case (and only if you don't want to go deep in the game, crafting a lot, search each corner, or use the toolset), controller is always clumsy for deep RPG management, for that reason main RPG in consoles are action, linear, emotive and cinematic.

But in addition of the clumsiness of the device, consoles also bear the problem of having a main casual audience. Diablo 3 had a skill tree during its development (there is an official screenshot on google), then was made public a memo in which Blizzard asked for a PS3 engeneer; the next news was that they have removed that skill tree, to the current "all in one" casual thing...

@s1taz4a3l: I'll bet they go full on custom character creation for this game.

And a bunch of people complain that the female characters don't look hot enough. : p

@bluzima:

Considering this game has an open world similar to Destiny, it would be kinda dumb to make everyone's gender/character be the same...

@bluzima: There arent amazon here, nor there where in d3.

Would be pretty short sighted and bound to create unnecessary controversy by locking classes to gender.

@s1taz4a3l: I guess you have a point with all the SJW silliness in movies and games today. Still, I would be happy if Blizzard put their foot down. Amazon is just an example of how you could create a unique class by gender locking it. Sirens, witches and banshees are other examples of female only characters. Whatever they decide, I'm hoping the last two classes are something fresh.

Also, the class is called Sorceress which implies it will be gender locked, in Diablo 3 it was called Wizard allowing for gender neutrality.

@s1taz4a3l:

I may be wrong but from watching every scene in the gameplay trailer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RdDpqCmjb4), it looks as though there were black/white (hard to tell) male barbarians, and a red headed female barbarian at 1:47 in the trailer.

There is also a short haired sorcerer at 1:12, and a long haired sorc at 1:40.

Honestly after having played games like Dota 2, Bloodborne, Dk3 and Resident Evil 2 (remake) this type of game just looks dated.

Take for example Path of Exile, FANTASTIC game. But ******* repetitive. It feels dated and mindless.

The genre may have been cool a decade ago, but now just seems repetitive and barely mentally engaging.

Torch was fun for like 20 hours. Then it was just more regurgitated content. Grim D I played for like 5 hours and quit. I guess I wanted to like these games, but they are simply repetitive and thats not immersive at all to me.

When the game comes out I will try out of curiosity. Hopefully Blizzard proves me wrong, but I doubt.

@emmanuelguerrero: I think it has to do with age as well. I could play Diablo 2 and Torchlight 2 for hours on end but I only lasted 50 hours in Path of Exile 15 years later. It takes more to challenge us as we grow wise and we expect more from games today.

@emmanuelguerrero: I’m in the same boat. Diablo 3 needs to be way more than the series has ever been to interest me these days.

The fact they didn’t announce the rumored Diablo 2 remaster has me hopeful they understand that game is basically just a clicker today and that Diablo needs to evolve.

You people complaining about 3 classes realize this game is at least 4 years out right? Blizzard typically releases 4-6 years after an announcement.

No that's completely false. Hell has already arrived since 2 months ago for 7 million people in Hong Kong.

@chaosbrigade: You know Hong Kong is part of China right? If they don’t want to live by Chinese laws they can leave. China isn’t stopping anyone from immigrating out of the country. Literally millions have left since it was turned over from the British in 1997.

@Baconstrip78: HK is not allowed to become independent or even have its own democratic elections to choose their own CE. Freedom of the press and freedom of speech in HK are slowly being taken away by China. This is the whole issue.

I was born in HK and My family lives in HK, buddy. I think I know the political situation better than you, thanks.
