Diablo 4 Hotfix Nerfs Dungeons Used For Power Leveling

Blizzard is standardizing elite monster spawns across all dungeons to reduce XP farming.

Blizzard has released its ninth Diablo IV hotfix since the game released last week, and it contains a nerf for elite monster spawns in popular XP-farming dungeons. Some fans aren't too happy about the change, pointing out that the nerfed dungeons were some of the most enjoyable to run in the game.

Previous Diablo hotfixes have tweaked spawn rates to try and balance overly popular dungeons, with the last six fixes containing "further adjustments to Elite monster rates in dungeons." The most recent patch also comes with a developer note, which adds, "we are standardizing the density of elite monsters that spawn in dungeons to ensure that no particular dungeon is clearly more efficient to run through than others."

Now Playing: Diablo IV Everything To Know

Players aren't happy with the change, with many expressing frustration in a Reddit thread that Blizzard chose to nerf spawn rates for its most popular dungeons, rather than increasing rates for the less-popular ones. Fans agree that blasting through large mobs is Diablo IV at its most fun, with standard dungeon spawn rates often feeling underwhelming.

In better news, the new hotfix has also re-enabled Edgemaster’s Aspect and Aspect of Berserk Ripping after fixing the earlier issues that were attached to the legendary aspects. The patch also includes a number of other bug fixes. The full patch notes can be found below:

DIABLO IV HOTFIX 9 - JUNE 12, 2023 - 1.0.2

Dungeons

  • Further adjustments to elite monster density in dungeons.

Developer Note: We are standardizing the density of elite monsters that spawn in dungeons to ensure that no particular dungeon is clearly more efficient to run through than others.

Bug Fixes

Legendary Aspect Changes

  • Fixed an issue where the damage bonus from the “Edgemaster’s Aspect” Legendary Affix was incorrectly reapplied to Whirlwind when a Shout was used.
  • Resolved issues relating to “Aspect of Berserk Ripping” and Barbarian’s Two-Handed Sword Expertise that were allowing players to deal unintended amounts of damage.

Miscellaneous

  • Fixed an issue where the World Tier 3 quest was given to players who have not yet met the requirements needed to advance to that World Tier.
  • Fixed an issue where an event in the Dilapidated Aqueducts subzone had improper level scaling.
  • Further stability improvements.

That was my favorite part about Diablo II back in the day was wondering if Blizzard was going to nerf areas because people were playing and having fun in ways Blizzard didn't intend.

Oh wait that wasn't possible back then because the game wasn't needlessly online for a cash money shop on top of an already full priced game.

Congrats to those who spent $70 plus to get this short of nonsense. Really played yourselves huh?

@kejigoto: I’m enjoying myself and haven’t purchased any extra content. They want the game balanced to function as intended and Diablo 2 was also patched a bunch.

@kejigoto: Not even remotely. Game is great fun and the cash shop may as well not exist as far as anyone is concerned...not intrusive in any way, shape or form. It's literally just there if you want to reskin your toon for $7 or whatever it comes out to and if you don't want to buy anything, it doesn't effect the game 1 silly little bit at all. Frankly, unlike the real money auction house and games that let people buy xp bonuses etc., the gameplay doesn't seem to have been effected at all by their choice to have a skins shop. Making you play longer doesn't make you buy skins. Making you play the game instead of skip playing the game so you can pretend you played the game doesn't incentivize or force you to buy skins either. This isn't like a subscription situation where long dragged out farming processes helps make you pay another month of subscription. D4's gameplay design literally has no indication of being effected by the skins shop.

@esqueejy: Just not in a way Blizzard doesn't approve of because then you won't be exposed to all their cash shop antics. If you play like that then Blizzard has to bring servers down so no one else can play that way and fix the "problem" which is people having fun in their own way.

@kejigoto: What cash shop antics? You can buy aesthetic garbage that's not need in any way to play the game. That's it. There's no subscription either. This change in no way, shape or form incentivizes or forces cash shop transactions on anyone.

Grow up. You either don't know what you're talking about, are just regurgitating cynical twaddle because you think that's cruise control for cool or both....probably both.

Outsider opinion, but for the people who have limited time to play games, I could understand this being perceived as an asshole thing to do.

@mooglestar: Not really. Leveling up is not terribly slow in the first place. This nonsense is about people who wanted to play the game without playing the game so they could have max level characters without...playing the game. It gets nerfed and then they invent post hoc excuses for wanting to play the game without playing the game. It's silliness.

In fact, one of the ways they do it is by literally not playing. You share XP with group mates, so you can have a high-level buddy run the dungeon for your Level 1 toon while you sit at the entrance and it will level you up fast. It's the ultimate in cheat code mentality. Then they strut around with their high level character like they did it themselves, tell people to L2P when they don't really even know their class (and just did a cookie-cutter build from the intertubes) and whatnot. Same as it was in WoW and other games.

@esqueejy:

"People want to skip the boring grind to get to the end game content with high level play."

So let me get this straight... Blizzard needlessly makes Diablo IV more like an MMO and when people treat it like an MMO (skip the grind for end game content which is always much more fun and fulfilling) this is a problem and somehow an issue with the players wanting to play the content that interests them and not Blizzard needlessly changing the formula for a cash shop...

The only reason this is an "asshole move" is because of the system Blizzard designed and wants to keep people in which is strictly for Blizzard's benefit.

And if I lost a hardcore character due to a server shut down you better believe I'd be looking to cut corners like this.

@kejigoto: Again, the cash shop in no way played any role in this decision and this decision in no way incentivizes or forces people to use the cash shop.

Some of the places were good for levelling up and now they want to take it away. I am not angry as they probably figuring too many levelling up too fast. I still have start playing as I got a crap load of other games that come first.

@lonewolf1044: Hats off to you, normally I don't see posts that mature when the topics of nerfs come up. I am in agreement, to me its not a big deal, sure it would be nice to keep in but I get it. If people are powerleveling through then they are also missing out on other content outside of dungeons like legion events and world bosses.

The problem is, you won't get anything from Legion/world boss until WT4, which is why most power level to at least 50 then start playing the real game. The only way to power level is if you already completed the entire story, and make a new character and choose skip story. So the person has already played through the 20-40 hour story and now just wants to get to the end game. Diablo 3 got this and added adventure mode to level in, which was 100x better than doing the story for the 30th time after a few seasons.

Now there are not many places that give good experience for the people who are still leveling the first time. Anyone power leveling already has at least one high level character, so it doesn't hurt them as much as people who are still trying to grind up. My biggest issue, outside the horrible inventory/UI system, is the fact that no place is very packed at all. The world is so spread out that you rarely see more than one pack before your shrine buffs run out.

@runvus: That is a very fair point, they claim that WT3 & 4 grant significantly more EXP but that is simply not true. I spent the larger part of the afternoon going from 59 to 60, and that was with a mix of several T-10 Nightmare dungeons, 2 world bosses, and 3 legion events. Exp across the board post game needs a massive buff as I can't imagine rolling a new toon each season if the grind is going to be that bad.
