Diablo III game director steps down

Longtime developer Jay Wilson leaving game after seven years; will transition into new role at Blizzard in the next few weeks.

After seven years working on Diablo III, Jay Wilson is leaving his post as game director for the dungeon-crawler. Wilson announced the news today in a blog post, noting the time is right to move on to a new project within Blizzard Entertainment.

No Caption Provided

"I recently celebrated my seven-year anniversary working on Diablo III, and while it's been one of the most challenging and rewarding periods of my life, I've reached a point creatively where I'm looking forward to working on something new," Wilson said. "The powers that be at Blizzard have been gracious enough to give me that opportunity. Over the course of the next several weeks, I will be moving off of the Diablo III project and transitioning elsewhere within Blizzard. This decision was not an easy one for me, and not one I made quickly, but ultimately it's what I feel is right."

Wilson made clear that his departure from the Diablo III development team "will not negatively impact our ongoing support of Diablo III." He said there is "lots" planned for the future of the game and that he will make himself available to the development team during the transition period. A new game director for Diablo III has not been announced, though Wilson said Blizzard is eager to find a replacement and learn what "fresh ideas they can bring to the table."

Wilson said he is proud of Diablo III and will miss the community that has formed around it, though he did admit his relationship with fans was not without its faults.

"I feel I have made many mistakes in managing that relationship, but my intent was always to provide a great gaming experience and be as open and receptive as possible, while still sticking true to the vision the Diablo team has for the game," he said.

Wilson also acknowledged that many may believe Blizzard fell short of its promise to release Diablo III "when it's ready." He said Blizzard always tries to make decisions based on information and knowledge present at the given time, though this is not an ideal situation.

"That doesn't mean we always make the right decisions, but if we made a mistake then I feel we've made an exceptional effort to correct it," he said.

Wilson ended his farewell note saying there are "great things" in the pipeline for Diablo III in 2013, though he did not specify what these might be.

"I'm leaving Diablo III in good hands, and my departure will not jeopardize the progress of the game as we continue to do what we do: listen, play, and improve," he said.

Diablo III launched in May 2012, was a top Google search for the year, and has sold over 10 million copies to date. The game shipped without its player-versus-player mode, and it does not appear this feature will be added anytime soon. Wilson said in late December that Diablo III PVP is stalled, noting Blizzard is going back to the drawing board to conceive something better.

Recently bought torchlight 2 (made by the real diablo team) and it completely crushes D3 in every way except for auction house, but that's a good thing. How or why D3 took that long to make is beyond me, I'm guessing some people were paid by the hour on that one.

I don't plan n any Blizzard purchases after that failure...

The amount of time to make this game is absolutely absurd. And what a disappointment it turned out to be. Blizzard should re-evaluate the way it produces games, if the end result is an outdated, buggy, bloated mess like Diablo 3. I bought this game the day it came out and it still has micro-stuttering that Blizzard never fixed. I've given up on it and have much more fun playing Torchlight 2.

"will not negatively impact our ongoing support of Diablo III."

Wait? Does that mean they actually tried to make Diablo III good?Wooooooaah. I thought they were just lazy and wanted the moniz. Which is probably true.

I'm just glad I didn't submit to my fanboyism of that game and bought it. The true succesor to Diablo 2 is going in open beta on january 23rd and I'm gonna throw all the money at a game that actually deserves it.

Good riddance to one of the biggest most astonishing failures of leadership and game development in history. It takes a special kind of Jay Wilson to turn a guaranteed GoTY into a complete joke.

F that loser!

Its not the auction house for me, or even other things they changed like skills. The game just is like a different game completely from diablo 1 and 2. You cant remove the gothic horror from it and the story is just awful. The characters have pictures straight out of world of warcraft with stupid bosses and a girl diablo? I mean what were they thinking?

This game is salvageable to me and even the loot they bragged about is worse then the previous games somehow.

@CptJohnnyRico @The_Gump Dude were talking about a guy that made 7 years of mistakes common, its pushing a fine line, the whole D3 game is a big mistake for starters having Jay Wislon on the the dev team.

Diablo 3 was hyped for 10 years as the sequel to the classic diablo 2. We all thought it would improve upon that game while keeping what made it so good, and diablo 3 did not do any of that.

Jay, you made diablo into a woman, lady of hell, you released D3 as a unfinished game (dont argue or ill bring hammerpoint into this), you spent far to much time, money, and talent making a unfinished, small, mediocre, linear, rmah, unimaginative, uncreative, one way street game, and i hope your new position is wiping the ass of someone with talent and a creative vision for what d3 can become

Path of Exile open beta in less than a week.

The pressure created by the thought of a free to play low budget indie developed game walking over Auction House Simulator 3 must have terrified him.

I cant say I am disappointed Jay is stepping down as lead director. I still love the game but the intent that the director went for was to ship it for the masses and not necessarily the people that loved the previous installments. They certainly made steps forward in game play but took a few steps back when considering the colorful and non creepy vibe the game released as. Not to mention hardcore mode is unplayable because at any moment you can get a lag spike and lose your character hero. Not to mention the whole auction house idea really did more harm than good.

Between the online only and real money auction house, this game was a disaster. But I can't blame Wilson as much as I can blame myself for trusting Blizzard enough to make this a day 1 buy for me. Never again.

@holmerpeter Not to defend this game in any way, but Diablo has always been about replaying the same several areas over and over on harder difficulties. If you don't like doing that then you should probably not be playing Diablo. I mean you could beat Diablo 2 in like 2 hours if you knew what you were doing. The point was always getting better loot, not about having a ton of levels and enemies.

Don't take this in any way as defending Jay WIlson...but let me put this out there. I think the bigger problem is the directive that Activision/Blizzard gave Mr. Wilson when they asked him to make the game. Maybe he had grand ideas for an awesome game, but the higher ups said "Thats great...go ahead...as long as it contains an auction house that we can make money off of in some way." Don't think for one minute that Bobby Kotick didn't see the 3rd party sites making money off Diablo 2 for 10 years and say "Hey, we need to be getting a piece of that pie." Diablo 3 has potential in gameplay, graphics, animation...it runs smooth, but it was doomed from day 1 when they used statistics to make money. They made it so that the likely hood of you finding your own gear are nil to none. So what it became is a gold grind to eventually go buy the stuff you wanted on the AH. It no longer was a loot hunting game, but an auction house bidding game after you put the required hours in. They used statistics to force transactions through their AH that = revenue. That is not fun.

In the end, I don't think Jay Wilson was as much of the problem as the higher ups that had $$ in their eyes. This trend is going to continue as long as game development companies continue to be huge publicly traded entities. In publicly traded company motivation is always the profit bottom line because of the influence of shareholders. Decisions will be made that may not be in the best interest of making a great game, but rather a great revenue generating game.

The only way I have found to combat this is by doing my part. Any games that are produced by big companies such as EA, Activision, Ubisoft...i wait until they are in the dirt cheap bargain bin if i really want to play them that bad. On the flip side, I through my day 1 purchase money at companies like CDProjeckt and FROM Software. Both companies have put out great games while admittedly making a good profit without trying to nickel and dime their customers.

@aermeus Very informative and well thought out post. I also posted above that this game was doomed ever since Activision bought the mighty Blizzard, even without Jay Wilson on the helm.

Im following "The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing" on facebook and their dev page. Progress is a bit slow but the game looks very promising. Its an ARGP by the way, you might want to check it out.
